Books? Pizza? Cool people? Yay! It's an Open Books Volunteer Party!

You're invited to an Open Books info session and pizza party, celebrating our newest literacy program and volunteer opportunity: OPEN BOOKS BUDDIES!  As an Open Books Buddy, you can join  us in classrooms, after-school homeless shelter programs, and other places around town as a reading mentor, tutor, or other volunteer. We even have a few select spots for super-fun volunteers to help with StoryBus, a huge, colorful tour bus that travels around Chicagoland spreading the love of reading.

Absolutely no experience is needed! Perks include free books, a limited edition t-shirt, VIP treatment at Open Books parties and events, and that unforgettable warm, fuzzy feeling you get from making the world a better place.

To learn all about the program and get started as a Buddy, join us at the pizza date of your choice! We'll be getting together on:

Wednesday, Nov. 14
at noon

and

Wednesday, Nov. 28
at 6:30 p.m.

Get to know our newest team member, Erin Walter! As Literacy Director, Erin is thrilled to combine her life's passions -- reading, writing, and teaching-- at Open Books. Erin will be working hard to create and implement  literacy classes and curriculum for our organization. Born in Austin, TX, this girl does NOT collect moss; a Northwestern University graduate, she has worked as a reporter for the Austin American-Statesman, an editor for the Texas Legislature, and a first grade teacher at her beloved public school alma mater. She also plays bass and sings in the Chicago band The Hidden Mitten.

Help Sort Us Out!

We've got 90,000 books to sort through...and we'd love your help to do it! Sorting happens over at our storage units twice a week.  Every volunteer will receive a colorful Limited Edition Open Books t-shirt as our thank you gift, and the right to take home any book you find that you would like to read. (We figure we'll get 'em back from you eventually!) To sign up, just contact Marilyn (mkaslofski@open-books.org).

Partnering With PACTT
pacttOpen Books is proud to announce a new book partner! Parents Allied With Children and Teachers for Tomorrow (PACTT), a not-for-profit agency working to serve individuals with autism and their families, has joined in our efforts to sort the more than 90,000 books donated to fill our store.  PACTT students and staff are tackling the giant task in their new vocational facility in Rogers Park, having fun, learning new skills, and helping Open Books tremendously. Everybody wins!
Out Of The Box: Three Fabulous Finds
In the process of sorting thousands upon thousands of books, there are always a few that stand out. Here are our three favorites for the month.

1. Asparagus Can Do It For You!

asparagus can do it for youWe know what you are thinking, naughty readers. But the mere juxtaposition of the jaunty spears and ambiguous title does not necessarily mean...that. Why not pick up some asparagus today and have it balance your checkbook, wash your windows, walk your dog, or finish your homework? Asparagus can do it. For YOU.

2. Violent Weather Predictions 2000-2001

violent weather predictions 2000-200180s fashion is making a comeback. Everything old is new again. And where clothing goes, can violent weather be far behind? Reminisce about those incredible typhoon, monsoon, and earthquake predictions with this handy reminder guide from the turn of the millennium. They just don't make them like they used to.

3. On Not Being Able To Paint

on not being able to paintThis is a little sad, really. Does it herald a series? On Not Being Able To Perform Calculus? On Not Being Able To Repair A Transmission? On Not Being Able To Perform Rhinoplasty? We can only be thankful that there is a way out of all these inadequacies and inabilities. Get thee to a grocery store, would-be painters, and purchase a big helpful bunch of can-do asparagus.

Open Books was founded in 2006 to open Chicago's first nonprofit literacy bookstore: a two-storied dream where proceeds from the sale of 50,000+ used books on the fun, colorful, comfortable first floor will go to fund a spectrum of unique adult, family, and computer literacy programs upstairs. As we wait for our new building to be ready in spring 2009, we work with literacy groups around the city to help students of all ages make reading a part of their lives.
