Democrats Miss Their Own Black Caucus Candidate Forum - Skop Attends

On Wednesday night, the Democratic Black Caucus held a Gainesville City Commission Candidate Forum at the downtown library.  The forum was moderated by leaders of the Democratic Black Caucus, including its president.

Nathan Skop was in attendnance, while Lauren Poe was not.  Mr. Poe had been invited, but declined to attend, indicating that he had to go to church, though he was at the LGAA forum that evening.

The questions at the forum were mostly centered around the biomass plant and the fact that that the proposed Bus Rapid Transit wouldn't serve east Gainesville.  A panel scored the candidate(s) and announced that it intends to submit the scores to the Gainesville Sun.

The buzz at the forum was that Lauren Poe had been instructed by leaders of the Democratic Party to not attend, and that the leadership of the Democratic Party, itself, chose not to attend due to the fact that many of the questions were going to be about GRU's GREC biomass power plant.

Last year, Michael Bowie,  wrote a letter to the City of Gainesville asking the City to reconsider the GREC biomass plant because of the rate impacts on some of Gainesville's poorest and most disadvantaged residents.  Mr. Bowie is the immediate past president of the Alachua County Branch of the NAACP.  At the time that he wrote the letter, he was the presiding president of the organization.

Also, last week, in a rare show of total unity, the Alachua County Commission voted unanimously to explore alternatives to buying power from the City of Gainesville's GREC power plant.

IMPORTANT - LOCATION CHANGE FOR TONIGHT'S ACREC MEETING

The meeting, tonight, is at CPPI (8200 NW 15th Place, Gainesville - Same business park as ACREC headquarters).

CPPI was kind enough to allow us to use their meeting room so that the meeting could be held in close proximity to our headquarters so that we could get right back to phone banking at the conclusion of the meeting.

The meeting starts at 7:00 P.M.  Adele Griffin from Senator Rubio's office will be coming to speak to us.

Before the meeting, ACREC HQ will be open to make phone calls.  We intend to conclude the meeting quickly so that we can go right back to making phone calls for Nathan Skop.

GRU, S&P and the Big Lie

Offended!  Offended, I say!  Craig Lowe is just offended and incredulous that Nathan Skop would point out that there is a dark side to Gainesville Regional Utility's Standard & Poor's rating, but that isn't half as entertaining as Susan Bottcher trying to paint a picture of Skop as a mentally deranged psychopath.  Yep, the last I heard, the stories out of the Poe, Lowe, Bottcher camp is that Skop goes out on weekends to club baby seals just for the sport of it.

So, back to GRU, Lowe and his whining about Nathan Skop.  Nathan correctly pointed out that the Gainesville City Commission's big lie is that the Standard & Poor's rating is, to a great deal, predicated on the fact that same City Commission is willing to continue to raise rates to meet the $1.025 billion (and growing) debt service, not to mention the more than $3 billion that they contracted at inflated prices to pay GREC for biomass power.

According to the Gainesville Sun, one of the strengths identified by Standard & Poor's is:

"Commission support for rate increases to maintain financial profile despite large capital spending program."

Translation: despite the fact that GRU has committed to spending a mountain of money, it's ok since they have also committed to continuing to raise customer rates.

According to the Gainesville Sun, one of the concerns that S&P had was:

"Debt burden associated with a 'sizable capital spending program from 2005-2017, although rate increases implemented and planned help mitigate this."

Translation: despite the fact that GRU has committed to spending a mountain of money, it's ok since they have also committed to continuing to raise customer rates.

Wait!  Both of those translations are the same thing.  How weird!

Folks, the fact is that while Craig Lowe is accusing Skop of trying to sabotage GRU's S&P rating, and while Susan Bottcher is trying to convince you that he is a raging psychopath, Skop is right, and Lowe is not telling you that the commission can continue GRU's outrageous spending because they will just keep raising your rates to infinity and beyond.

Check it out.  Businesses in Alachua County already pay the highest electric rates in the state.  If you are a family with several children or a handful of college students sharing a house and your usage puts you in GRU's second tier, you are paying some of the highest residential rates in the state, and that's without GRU's fuel surcharge.

Hang on, Gainesvillagers! (ack! gag!)  The Poe, Lowe, Bottcher cabal ain't done yet!

And, Nathan Skop is right!

Are You In?  Will You Stand With Nathan?

Nathan Skop has made the runoff against Lauren Poe for the Gainesville City Commission!

Nathan has done a great job building building a broad-based coalition of people that go beyond party labels and understand that accountability in government and livability as well as affordability of the community have given way to a ruling elite that govern for their own self-interest and glory.

There are several ways to support Skop:

Walking Neighborhoods This Weekend:

This weekend, people will be walking neighborhoods to speak to voters and hand out palm cards.

Phone Calling at Republican HQ:

We need to reach every Nathan Skop voter that we can.  Headquarters is open every weeknight until the election from 5 to 8:30 for phone calling, and we will provide dinner.

Phone Calling From Home:

We have the lists and we have the scripts ready to send to you.  In fact, many people are already using them to call from the comfort of thier own home.
