Replacing Rodney Long - How The Process Works

As we all know, by now, Alachua County Commissioner Rodney Long has announced his retirement, effective today.

The timing of Commissioner Long's retirement means that Governor Scott will appoint a commissioner to serve the remainder of the term until a newly elected commissioner takes office after the November 2012 General Elections.

The Alachua County Republican Party has gotten a lot of calls from people interested in this process and interested in being considered.

We have received enough inquiries that we thought it would be helpful to provide some basic information about how this process will work.

According to the Governor's Appointments Office, the process to appoint a County Commissioner will take between 6 and 12 weeks.  Since we are approaching Christmas and New Year, that could conceivably impact the time frame of the process a little bit.

As of yesterday, no application deadline had been set, but the application part of the process will likely close shortly after the first of the year.

If you live in Alachua County Commission District 5, which includes precincts 1, 2, 12, 17, 24, 16, 33, 34, 38, 55, 57 and parts of precincts 21, 29, 37, 44, 58, 61, 63, 64 and 70 and you would like to apply, you can click here to download the Governor's Questionnaire.

If you have any questions about the process, the Governor's Appointments Office can be reached at 850-488-2183 or at appointments@eog.myflorida.com.

If you are interested, but are unsure of what precinct or County Commission district that you live in,  you can contact the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections at 352-374-5252.  We can also help you determine which precinct you live in.  The Alachua County Republican Party can be reached at 352-275-5003 or contactus@alachuarepublicans.com.

Republican Christmas Party And Other Events

December 22nd - Republican Christmas Party:

On Thursday, December 22nd, starting at 6:00 P.M., the Alachua County Republican Party will be hosting its annual Christmas Party at it's headquarters (1772 NW 80th Blvd, Suite 90).

The Alachua County Republican Christmas Party is a potluck event.  Everybody usually brings something to share (a pie, cookies, soda, eggnog, etc).  If you can, that would be great.  If you can't, please bring yourself and enjoy in the fun.

If you need suggestions on something to bring, or would like to RSVP, please call Delena at 352-316-0151 or email us at contactus@alachuarepublicans.com

We expect most of our Alachua County Commission candidates and the Gainesville City Commission candidates that are registered Republican to be in attendance, so it will be a great opportunity to meet and greet with them and to get to know them.

In fact, this year's Christmas Party is dedicated to all of those commission candidates - our happy warriors that are preparing to head in to electoral battle in 2012.  They are our special guests.
