Slaughtering A Sacred Cow
By Stafford Jones

Holy cow!  A couple of weeks ago, we took a look at the Mayor's bicycle vs. car challenge, and we just felt like it was a test designed to let the bicycle win.  In our minds, it wasn't a real world challenge.  A bicycle is fine for specific circumstance, but in the real world, you can't do the family grocery shopping on a bicycle.  You can't pick up the dry cleaning on a bicycle.  You can't take the kids to karate, lacrosse or whatever else it is they do, on a bicycle.  If you are a business person or a traveling sales person, you can't really perform your daily business travel on a bicycle.

I suppose that if all you do is go to one location and work, a bicycle would be fine to ride there and back, as long as you didn't have to pick up groceries, kids or dry cleaning along the way, but that scenario wasn't even close to Craig Lowe's bicycle vs. car challenge.

After some conversation, Alex Patton and I decided that we were going to try it out for ourselves, and Alex threw down a challenge.  We would set a course with some real world, real life errands and stops and see what happens.  Make no mistake, Alex thinks he can win and will trying hard to do that.  I don't think he can.

Frankly, we have no illusions that the car will actually win.  After all, we are talking about liberal Gainesville.  The roads have been designed by liberal commissioners and liberal planners to impede car traffic, not to let it flow.  Still, we wanted to find out how practical it is to be a parent and / or business owner on a bicycle.

Little did we realize that the liberal community would go nuts.  Just check out the Gainesville Sun's County Lines and City Limits blog on our bicycle vs. car challenge.   Apparently, by giving a bicycle rider something a little more challenging than a perfect, utopian course, we are slaughtering one of their sacred cows.  The comments come complete with personal insults and even threats of arrest.  One commenter, John-David Feldman even went out of his way to hunt down my cell phone number on the web and call me.  In addition to trying to start a debate with me on the evils of the automobile, I had the feeling that he was probably recording the call in the hopes that I would say something that he could use to discredit us and our version of the bicycle vs. car challenge.  I wonder if he knows that recording a call without the knowledge and consent of the party being recorded is illegal.

While the Uptown Liberals are decrying the automobile and glorifying bikes, the Mayor and the City Commissioners are afforded free, reserved parking at city hall (see picture above), and a few weeks ago, notorious road hater and Alachua County Commissioner Mike Bylerly missed part of a county commission meeting because a car was in the shop and he had been reduced to a "one car family."

The ACREC's Bicycle vs. Car Challenge will be going forward. Unlike the Mayor's test, it isn't fixed one way or another. Frankly, the challenge isn't even necessarily about who finishes first. It is about the right tool for the right job.

Throughout his lengthy career, legendary guitarist, Ted Nugent, has reveled in the criticism that always seems to come from his patriotic straight-talk. While there's no denying his exceptional talent on the six-string, his knack for penning arena rock anthems, or his standing as one of rock's top live acts, it's his non-musical endeavors that have caused the most consternation from his detractors (his conservative beliefs and his 2nd Amendment advocacy). But by the same token, Nugent is a family man and one of the few hard rockers who has admirably stuck by his lifelong anti-drugs and anti-drink stance throughout his career.

Ted doesn't just limit himself to music and hunting, he's very outspoken when it come to other issues that hit close to home including politics, the Second Amendment and crime.

He's received the James Fenimore Cooper Award for his many accomplishments in the field of writing and for his amazing work promoting American hunting and outdoor heritage. His top rated show on Outdoor Channel, Ted Nugent Spirit of the Wild, is the four-time winner of the People's Choice Best Hunting Show Golden Moose Award. The North American Hunting Club named Ted the #1 Hunt Partner and he's the winner of the first-ever ATV Image Award. It was presented to Ted by ATV Industry Magazine in 2004 for his commitment to outdoor life, hunting and recreation.

At 61, Ted has no plans of slowing down.  Ted's a loving husband to his wife Shemane and a devoted father to his daughters Starr and Sasha and sons Toby and Rocco.

As busy as he is, he's doing what he loves. Ted said it best, "I really have the American dream licked."
