NC Department of Environment & Natural Resources (NCDENR) Updates Their UST Regulations

Effective May 1, 2012, the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) Underground Storage Tank (UST) Section updated the Guidelines for Sampling associated with petroleum and non-petroleum releases. Specifically, updates were made to include the most recent analytical methods and retire older methods. The changes included the addition of new constituents to the Gross Contaminant Levels (GCL) and Maximum Soil Contaminant Concentrations (MSCC) tables for regulatory incident management.

The changes are associated with the addition of 20 new compounds to the North Carolina Groundwater Standards. The changes were designed to provide a groundwater standard that is achievable by any analytical laboratory.  The positive effect of setting new standards is that these standards are higher than method detection limits (MDLs) which is the default standard. By providing standards for compounds previously not listed in the Groundwater Standards list, some sites may be able to reach regulatory closure.

Pyramid Environmental works with the NCDENR and private clients to provide assessment and remediation using the appropriate analytical methods.  These updated guidelines have the potential to assist our clients in closing contaminated sites more quickly.  As always, Pyramid is aware of the regulations that affect our clients and have incorporated the new guidelines into our environmental sampling and analytical procedures.

Trust Fund Financial Assistance for Contaminated Site Cleanup

Pyramid Can Help You Receive State $$ For Your UST Site Cleanup!

The North Carolina Division of Waste Management provides clean-up funds to assist responsible parties with the costs associated with remediating contaminated soil or groundwater caused by underground storage tanks (USTs). Specifically, two types of Trust Funds have been established to deal with contamination caused by the release of petroleum from USTs. The Commercial Trust Fund and the Noncommercial Trust Fund are designed to reimburse tank owners, operators, and landowners for costs associated with cleanups.

Commercial underground storage tanks include USTs containing petroleum products for resale, farm or residential motor fuel tanks with a capacity greater than 1,100 gallons, heating oil tanks greater than 1,100 gallons (unless they serve four or fewer households).

Noncommercial underground storage tanks include heating oil tanks with a capacity of 1,100 gallons or less, heating oil tanks with a capacity greater than 1,100 gallons that serve one to four households, farm or residential motor fuel tanks with a capacity of 1,100 gallons or less.

For years, Pyramid Environmental has been assisting our clients in obtaining state Trust Fund compensation for their environmental issues associated with USTs. Our commitment to providing not only the best scientific services, but also the most cost-effective approaches to solving our clients' problems, makes Pyramid an ideal choice for UST management.
