Lynne Panega 2012

We survived the Ryder Cup!  The coach buses driving down Medinah Road have left.  The crowds walking across our tennis courts are gone.  The Ryder Cup is over.  We're getting back to life as normal at Lake Park High School this week.

To all of our families, staff, alumni, and community members who volunteered as concession or parking volunteers with the Ryder Cup last week - Thank You!

We appreciate your generosity in welcoming the tens of thousands of visitors daily to our community last week.  Your contributions helped to make the Ryder Cup an international success.  Many of you stepped up to work extra shifts to help meet the needs of the Levy concession stands.
Your dedication and commitment to Lake Park High School will long be remembered.

The East Campus parking lot was used as a shuttle drop off for Ryder Cup guests.

Congratulations to National Merit Commended students Jordan DeClerk, Jakub Jezusek, James Armbrecht, Anusha Adkoli, and Jeremy Carter.  They are among 4,000 commended students nationwide who are being recognized for this honor.  They have placed among the top 5% of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013 competition.
Spring 2012 Honor Roll Students Named

Congratulations to the students who achieved Honor Roll status from the 2011-2012 second semester.  The students and their parents were invited to Honor Roll assemblies held this past week at both campuses.  For a list of the honor roll students, click here.
Marching Band Earns First Place

Congratulations to our Lancer marching band in winning first place in class AAA at the Prospect "Knight of Champions" marching band competition last Saturday, September 29.  The band competed against 17 other Illinois bands.  The Lake Park marching band was awarded first place in class AAA, winning all captions, and was named the Grand Champion of the competition.  We were also awarded the travelling trophy for receiving the highest score of all competing bands in all classes.

The marching band also earned first place in the AAA competition and overall Grand Champion at the recent Wheaton North Falcon Marching Band Festival, competing against sixteen other bands from the Chicago area.  Congratulations!
Mock Election Held at Both Campuses

This past Wednesday, students at both campuses had the

opportunity to participate in a mock election during their lunch periods.  Mock elections demonstrate the ease of the voting process to high school students.

The League of Women Voters of Glen Ellyn and the new Members at Large Unit of the LWV of Bloomingdale/Roselle organized the event, with sponsorship from the DuPage County Election Commission.
Business Law Field Trip

Twenty students in the Business Law class visited the Cook County Department of Corrections prison and court house in Chicago on Wednesday, October 3.  The purpose of the field trip was to increase students' knowledge and skills relating to our legal system and apply these skills to the classroom curriculum and everyday life.  While touring the Cook County Courthouse, the students observed a murder trial.

Kimberly Reynolds, teacher of the Business Law class stated, "This was a great opportunity for students to analyze the choices they make in their lives.  They realize that everything has a positive or a negative consequence."  She also noted that the students are grateful for the opportunities that Lake Park provides, having observed the limited academic, athletic, and extracurricular options available at the Cook County Department of Corrections. While many of the inmates are adults, some are still in their teens.

Business Law is designed to introduce students to the legal system and concentrates on the rights and problems encountered in the business world.  In doing so, students increase their vocabulary, become more aware of why we have laws, sharpen their abilities to think logically, organize their thoughts systematically, and become more adept at expressing those thoughts in both written or oral forms.

choir, Voices of Lake Park, were featured at this year's "Feet for Seats 5K Run/Walk." on September 15. The proceeds of the race benefited Overshadowed Theatre Productions of Itasca.  Their goal is to build a brand new  300-seat theatre. Voices of Lake Park sang Brian Tate's "Hold Me, Rock Me", Stephen Hatfield's arrangement of the Zulu folk song, "Jabula Jesu", and the National Anthem.  After their performance, many of the choir students, Mr. Gallo, and Ms. Ognacevic participated in the race.

Children's Theatre Charlotte's Web

The Lake Park drama department will host its annual children's theatre with performances of Charlotte's Web.   They will present to Lake Park's elementary and junior high sender schools on Tuesday, October 9 and Wednesday, October 10.  After each performance, the cast will hold a brief question-and-answer period for the younger audience members.

The general public is invited to the show on Tuesday, October 9 at 7 pm in the LP East Campus Dice Auditorium.  Admission is free.  This is an ideal play for families, church groups, and scout troops.  Behind-the-scenes tours are available.  For more information, contact lptheatreboxoffice@lphs.org or call 630.295.5313.

The Children's Literature Association named Charlotte's Web "the best American children's book of the past two hundred years."  Wilbur is an irresistible young pig who desperately wants to avoid the butcher; determined to save Wibur, Charlotte begins her campaign with the miracle of her web in which she writes, "Some Pig."  It's the beginning of a victorious campaign which ultimately ends with the now-safe Wilbur doing what is most important to Charlotte.  This is a beautiful, knowing play about friendship.

Cast members include sophomore Frannie Catalano as Charlotte, junior Dominique Giraud as Fern Arable, junior Marisa Panzeca as Mrs. Arable, sophomore Megan Havenga as Mrs. Zuckerman, sophomore Ashley Clodfelter as Goose, junior Victoria Lolos as Sheen, and freshman Andrea DeLeon as Lamb.

This is the first time many of the cast members have been in a high school production.  Senior Amanda Horner, who plays First Member shares, "Since it is my senior year, I am really enjoying getting to have the first line of the show."  Junior Victoria Lolos, who is playing Sheen, says, "I've always considered being in theatre and I'm happy I'm finally a part of it."  Junior Maria Quijano, who is playing Fourth Member, says, "I'm a little nervous, but excited at the same time."

Vision and Hearing Screening

The DuPage County Health Department, in conjunction with Lake Park's school nurses, will be conducting vision and hearing screening services on Wednesday, October 10 at West Campus and Wednesday, October 31 at East Campus.

Special Education, Foster Children and Transfer Students are required by law to have annual vision and hearing screenings.  Students with glasses prescribed will not be screened for vision.  Students who have a cochlear implant will not be screened for hearing.  Students will be asked to bring their glasses to screenings to ensure that they are in working order and the prescription has been reviewed by their eye doctor within 2 years time.

Vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor.  Your child is not required to undergo this vision screening if an optometrist or ophthalmologist has completed and signed a report form indicating that an examination has been administered within the previous 12 months.
Freshman Physicals Due October 15

Monday, October 15 is the deadline for all students to submit required health information, in accordance with State of Illinois regulations.  All ninth grade students are required to submit a ninth grade physical with updated immunizations in order to remain in school.

If you have been contacted identifying needed health information for your student, please provide the requested information by October 17 or your student will be unable to attend classes until the information is received.  If you have any questions, please call the EC nurse's office at 630.295.5235.
