While graduation may feel like it will take forever to arrive for our seniors, the reality is that it will be here in just over two months.  Our end-of-the year activities are beginning to take shape and our campuses are gearing up for annual events such as the Mr. Lancer contest, the Spirit of Excellence recognition  ceremony, and our Hoops for Heart fund raiser over the next several weeks.

At Lake Park High School, we are fortunate to offer a variety of scholarships designated especially for our students through several organizations including the Lake Park Educational Foundation, Booster Club, Lake Park Partners in Education, and several other groups.  Please remind your senior student to stop by the Career Center in our West Campus counseling office to learn more about the scholarships.  NOW is the time for them to apply since the deadlines for many of them are the first week of April.  Your student can pick up the applications forms from the WC Career Center and work on them during Spring Break.  For more information, please click here to view a summary of these scholarships.

Also, please take a few minutes to check the Home Access Center (HAC) to confirm that we have the correct spelling of your student's name as listed on his/her birth certificate.  We are already beginning to work on the commencement program and diplomas so it is important to notify the WC registrar if any changes need to be made.  If there are, please call 630-295-5340 or email rgalis@lphs.org with the correct spelling.  The deadline for corrections is April 15.

LP Lancettes Crowned AAA State Champs

Congratulations to the Lake Park Varsity Lancettes dance team on being named State Grand Champions, after capturing the AAA Lyrical State Title and ranking 3rd Place in the Open Dance Category at last weekend's Team Dance Illinois State Championship Competition in Peoria.  Both the Grand Championship and Lyrical Title are firsts in Lake Park history and add to other record-breaking accolades earned this season in regional competLancettesition, including repeated artistic and technical wins as the highest scoring team across all categories and divisions.

The team clinched the State Championship with their chilling Lyrical performance "Calm Under the Waves" ---one that moved the girls, their coaches, and their parents to tears.  It was a magical moment to witness as the girls left their hearts and soul on the dance floor and told the story of saying goodbye to someone you love, using motifs of water, waves, and breeze, as choreographed by Varsity Coach Stephanie Hageman.

In the Open Dance category, the Lancettes celebrated cultural dance forms in "Waving Flag," choreographed by Maria DiPrizio and Lauren Caputo.   This upbeat, exciting, and celebratory dance was a crowd favorite all season.

The Varsity team had experience on their side, comprised of 6 seniors, including captains Lauren Dahly and Maria-Cristina Gianni, 7 juniors, 2 sophomores and 1 freshman.   Varsity Coach, Stephanie Hageman has coached almost all of the dancers since their freshman year.   This experience, along with the addition of team ballet classes, elevated the technical standard of the whole team and definitely paid off as the Lancettes reached new heights in this memorable and historic season.

Sophomores Have Unique Opportunity

Macbeth
Photo by Michael Brosilow and provided by Chicago Shakespeare Theater.

Through their English classes, sophomores had two unique opportunities to blend classroom learning with experiential learning.  As a foundation to begin studying Macbeth, students participated in an Expert Forum on the Dramatic Process on February 11.   Teachers Gregg Long provided background about the time period and Shakespeare while Donna Sciacca explored the dramatic process with students and provided an interpretation of the written word.  Stephen James Anderson, a trained stage combat performer, provided an overview of the art of stage combat and necessity of  it in a production of Macbeth.

Having established this foundation through the Expert Forum and studying the play in their classrooms, students participated in the final step of the dramatic process this past Tuesday.  As an educated audience, they viewed an outstanding in-school performance when the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre travelled to Lake Park to perform Macbeth.  Afterwards, students joined the cast for a post-show discussion.

The English teachers designed the two workshops to facilitate the sophomores' study of Macbeth.  Drama requires participation from the audience.  Based on the content of the speakers' presentations in the Expert Forum, the students were encouraged to participate in the dramatic process.

According to organizer Susan Marshall, "Since Lake Park High School has access to many experts and organizations, I believe it is time to open the classroom door and invite these experts in to share their work with the students at Lake Park High School."
Thank you to sophomore English teachers, especially Susan Marshall and Mindy Hoover, for coordinating this wonderful learning opportunity for our students!  Additionally, the support and participation of the administration, staff, parents, and students helped the English department make these events possible for the sophomore Lancers.

Save Your Pop Tabs

Something as simple as saving the tabs from your can of pop can make a tremendous difference for families of seriously ill children.  HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) is sponsoring the third annual pop tab collection drive through Monday, March 21.  Collect them at home and have your WC student bring them to their first hour class.  The class with the highest percentage collected per student will win a Panera breakfast on March 24.  Last year, Lake Park collected nearly 181,000 pop tabs (for a cumulative total of 321,000 over the past two years).  We hope to eventually reach the "Thanks a Million Club".

The pop tabs are recycled and all proceeds go towards the Ronald McDonald House at Loyola Medical Center.  Ronald McDonald Houses provide a home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals and are located in over 30 countries.
Hoops For Heart

Lake Park's Physical Education department will sponsor their annual Hoops for Heart fundraiser on Friday, March 25.  The students will be joining the fight against heart disease and stroke, America's number 1 and number 3 killers, by collecting funds for research and education.  The annual event features a basketball tournament which encourage students' heart health.  Students can support Hoops For Heart by playing in or watching the tournament, buying drawing tickets to win a variety of items, or buying a smoothie created by our culinary students.  If you'd like to support Hoops For Heart by making a donation, please click here.
Sodexo
Sodexo Stresses Healthy Food Choices

March is National Nutrition Month and this year's theme is "Eat Right With Color".  Patrick Thompson, Sodexo Food Service Director at LP, stressed that point in special "lunch and learn sessions" at both campuses.  Sodexo staff worked with students by showing samples of "healthy" vs. "not so healthy" breakfast and lunch meal trays.  Above, Sodexo dietetic intern Mital Pandya talks to McKinley Pendergrass and Cory Lair about good food choices.  Since McKinley is a vegetarian, Mital showed her a food pyramid designed especially for vegetarians.  To find the pyramid that's right for your personal path to good health, click here.

"The best part about my job is the interactions I have with students, parents and staff community at Lake Park.  I love the fact that every day is completely different from the next.  Whether I am working with a student on their college application, helping a student through a crisis at home or contacting parents about their student's social/emotional health, I am able to help and advise throughout these circumstances."

Chris Fruehling:

Patrice Lovelace:

"I worked in the business world at Motorola for five years before becoming a counselor. I did my counseling internship at Lake Park and was very fortunate to be offered a position at Lake Park as a counselor.  I love working with students and being able to help them navigate through their high school career, helping them any way I can."

Valerie McFarlin:

"After graduation, I entered Northwestern U.'s Physical Therapy program. I left after 3 months-didn't like dissecting cadavers!  Funny since then I married a surgeon and we had five children. I obtained my teaching license and taught for 4 years (1 year in an American School in Germany).  I worked as a counselor at Elk Grove HS before I came to LP 14 years ago.  What I like most about my job is meeting with the students individually and discussing their goals and dreams for the future."

Chris Ward:
BA in English-University of Pittsburgh
MS in Counseling Psychology-University of Kansas
"I began teaching students English, in the McKeesport Area School District, in Pennsylvania where I attended school. After working there for 3 years, I moved to Kansas where I worked with students in the Shawnee Mission School District, grades 8 & 9.  (For those who are wondering, Shawnee Mission is not an Indian reservation but rather an affluent district in Overland Park, Kansas). I taught all levels of English from remedial to honors for the next 18 years before becoming a counselor. This is my tenth year at Lake Park and my 20th as a counselor. What I like best about counseling is talking to students about their passions and concerns, and providing with the tools to be successful in high school and beyond."
