Superintendent's Column
Efficiency and sustainability initiatives have been at the forefront at Lake Park High School for the past several years. Besides being "environmentally friendly", these efforts have resulted in cost savings to the District. With the building renovations at both campuses several years ago, energy efficient lighting was installed with motion sensors. Environmentally-friendly cleaning supplies and products made from recycled ingredients are now purchased if they are available. Last year, the District purchased 15-passenger minibuses to transport students to extracurricular events when possible rather than rent large 66-passenger buses.
In our continuing efforts to "go green", Lake Park is considering moving towards electronic communication with parents rather than through printed paper communication. This may include options to receive your student's report card electronically and receiving publications such as the "Lancer Log" calendar electronically. Another option we are exploring is transitioning from a six-week grading period to a nine-week grading period. While Lake Park has traditionally issued grade reports every six weeks, the more common practice in high schools across DuPage County and the State of Illinois is nine-week grading periods. Prior to the availability of online access by parents to their student's grades, six-week report cards supported improved communication with parents. Now that parents can access their student's grades electronically at any time through Home Access Center, it is our belief that a nine-week grading period is sufficient. A nine-week grading period will also result in cost savings of paper supplies and two mailings per year.
We are seeking input from parents regarding the transition to electronic communication and the possible change to a nine-week grading period. I would welcome your comments on these issues. We will also have a parent survey on these topics at Parent-Teacher conferences next week. Feel free to email me at lpanega@lphs.org with your comments. I look forward to hearing from you. |

LP Alumni to Bike Across Country
This May, eight Lancers for Life from the Class of 2010 will begin a cross-country bike ride to raise money for Huntington's Disease. The group, spearheaded by Patrick Dimpsey, includes Nick Ciaglia, Tim Fergus, AJ Fisher, Ryan Jorgensen, Steve Krauss, Tim Layer, and Marc Ostrowski. The 3,600 journey will begin in New Jersey and end in San Francisco, with the young men carrying their equipment on their bikes and camping along the way. They anticipate it will take two months to complete the trip. To support their efforts and raise awareness of Huntington's Disease, they have created "Camp Earth". Click here to learn more about Camp Earth. They are selling "Camp Earth" wristbands for $1 each which can be purchased from from LP teacher Lesley Pierce( lpierce@lphs.org). Their friend's father passed away from Huntington's Disease and now his older brother has been diagnosed with the hereditary condition. Parents with the disease have a 50% chance of passing it along to their children. According to the National Institutes of Health, "There is no cure for Huntington's disease, and there is no known way to stop the disease from getting worse. The goal of treatment is to slow down the course of the disease and help the person function for as long and as comfortably as possible." Please support the efforts of our Lancers For Life in finding a cure for this devastating disease. Click here to make a donation. |
Winter Guard Home Show on March 26
Lake Park's two Winter Guard units will take center stage when the Midwest Colorguard Circuit hosts the Winter Guard Home Show at West Campus on Saturday, March 26, beginning at 3 p.m. The show will feature more than 20 colorguard units competing from throughout the Midwest, including an exhibition performance by Green Thunder Percussion. Winter Guard, the indoor version of Color Guard, brings music to life through competition, using a combination of flags, sabers, mock rifles and other equipment as well as dance and interpretive movement. Under the direction of Amy Sharp, Lake Park's two Winter Guard units will perform "Tightrope" and "It Gets Better." "Tightrope," an upbeat, energetic, fast paced four-minute show performed by Winter Guard A, is based around the geometric lines created on the performance floor. Winter Guard A's performance of "Tightrope" recently earned the unit 2nd place at the MCGC competition at Lincoln-Way North in south suburban Frankfort. "It Gets Better," based on the recent media storm of bullying and teenage suicide, earned the 15-member Open Guard 3rd Place at the Lincoln-Way North competition and 6th at the Regional Competition in Indianapolis. This five-minute show features music by The Scala Choir, Christina Aguilera, Adam Lambert and Bruno Mars. After a very successful 2010 season, Green Thunder Percussion begins its 4th season of providing a percussion outlet for advanced players under the instruction of some of the most talented and skilled percussive educators in the nation. Green Thunder Percussion will perform its critically-acclaimed performance of "Break Free," featuring music by Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer, Leonard Cohen and Sigur Ros. The performance schedule and ticket prices for the Winter Guard Home Show will be available approximately one week before the event. Information can be found on the Midwest Colorguard Circuit web site at www.midwestcolorguard.com. |
Save the Date - Band Auxiliary Fundraiser
The LP Band Auxiliary will host "The Music Connection," a silent and live auction fundraiser with dinner, on Saturday, April 16, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Bloomingdale Golf Club, located at Lake Street and Glen Ellyn Road in Bloomingdale, IL. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the LP music programs, including concert bands, marching band, jazz band and the winter guard program.
"The Lake Park Band Auxiliary first hosted this bi-annual auction fundraiser in February 2000 and we are pleased to continue the tradition in 2011," said Nancy Magnus, co-chairperson of this year's event. "Our goal is to raise more than $20,000 to support Lake Park Lancer Band programs at the high school."
More than 200 people are expected to attend "The Music Connection," which will kick-off with cocktails and the opening of the silent auction. Following a four-course formal dinner of soup, salad, choice of entrée and dessert, the live auction will begin at 9 p.m. led by Auctioneer Matt Leahy.
"We are pleased to have the support of many local and national businesses who have donated items for this year's auction," said Patti Zubak, who co-chairs the committee and is soliciting donations for both the silent and live auctions. A variety of items, including dining, entertainment, service, sports and leisure packages have been secured for the event.
In addition, only 120 tickets will be raffled at $20 each for a chance to win an I-Pad. And, attendees can participate in Wine & Dine by purchasing a bottle of wine and receiving a gift certificate of their choice for a local restaurant.
Individual tickets are priced at $30 per person and tables of 10 may be purchased for $300. Tickets are available by calling 630-673-4170 or 630-606-5197.
