Superintendent's Column:

The H1N1 flu has been in the news for the last couple of weeks.  While the media coverage is decreasing, we want to remind parents to encourage your children to continue to practice safe hygiene practices at home and at school.

The DuPage County Health Department has asked schools to continue to monitor absentee rates with their students and staff.

If your student is sick with flu-like symptoms, please keep him/her home from school.

In addition, if you are calling him/her in absent from school, please indicate on our absence line whether it is because:

· You are concerned about your child becoming sick, and want to keep them home to avoid being sick as a preventative measure;

· Your child has flu-like symptoms which include:  cough, sore throat, or fever; or

· Your child has other reasons for being absent.

We appreciate your continued cooperation in encouraging safe hygiene practices with your student.

Sincerely,

John K. Butts, Ph.D.

Pride in Performance Winners Announced

Congratulations to the following students who received Pride in Performance awards for the 5th grading period:

East Campus:
Athletics - Zachery Ziemek is an all around athlete on the track team - competing in the long jump, triple jump and pole vault.  He recently broke a meet record in the pole vault that had stood since the 1970's.  Just as impressive, Zach is an outstanding and respectful young man!

Activities - Brandon Weber is a hard-working, dedicated worker who looks to help others.  He has spent many hours all year on Students Against Destructive Decisions' activities and does so with a great attitude.

Academics - Palak Bhesania is a prepared, conscientious and organized student.  His positive attitude is one of his greatest assets.  He is a great contributor to the Lake Park academic community.

Achievements - Philip VanDuyne sets a great example for his peers as he is involved in many activities in addition to maintaining high grades.  He volunteered for Hoops for Hearts and is in chorus, musical, plays volleyball and helps special needs students play baseball.  Needless to say, we are proud of his effort in all areas!

West Campus:
Academics -  Megan Collins has demonstrated an amazing change in her efforts during the past couple of months.  Good is not good enough for Megan.  She has become a leader in Spanish class and a model for others around her.  Recently, Megan has earned A's on all tests and quizzes.   She is attentive and participatory.  She makes strong contributions and studies hard and is very deserving of this award.

Activities - Taylor Sheeks is a staple in our theatre program.  Without Taylor's drive, artistry and leadership, much of the lighting design and execution would not be of such high quality.  She is a pleasure to work with, leads by example and has a great work ethic.  She is a great teacher to the underclassmen.

Achievement -  Peter DeMars is part of the Senior Leadership Program and is assigned to a Restrictive P.E. class that has all special needs students.  He is an integral part of our staff (teacher, one-on-one aides and Peter).  He helps out wherever and whenever he can.  He is assigned to work with a different student each day.  He respects and cares for each of his "charges".  It has been rewarding to watch Peter grow in his job.

Athletics -  Gary Soper tied the school record on rings with a 9.55 and has won on the rings at every meet except one.  He has not scored below 9.1 at any competition.  Gary has the strongest strength combinations ever performed in the state of Illinois.  He has dominated teams and is truly the best ringman in LP history.  He is a role model for his teammates, who elected him captain because of his work ethic, attitude and the way he genuinely cares about his teammates.

Athletics - Bryant Honsa placed  2nd in two events and led the Lake Park swim team to a 9th place finish at the State meet this year.  He is ranked in the top 5 in Illinois in two events and ranked in the top 10 in the nation in two events.  Bryant has been awarded a scholarship to swim at Indiana University next year.

National Honor Society Inductees
On April 23, the Lake Park High School Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted new members.  Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student. The society recognizes students who excel in scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Each category is judged independently.

In addition to an academic requirement of a 4.5 cumulative grade point average, participation and leadership in school activities are essential. No student is inducted simply because of a high academic average. The National Honor Society strives to recognize the total student-one who excels in all four of the above areas.

Congratulations to the juniors and seniors listed below who have been accepted into the National Honor Society this year:
Sarah Actipes, Marie Adelman, Sarah Ahmed, Katherine Anderson, Laura Aranda, Rachael Augustine, Mark Brachmanski, Lisa Brooks, Paola Carrera, Cali Cerami, Christian Charukiewicz, Christophe Chelsie, Jarrod Cook, Taylor Corsten, Jacqueline Cozzone, Danielle Dale, Kristen Danek, Matthew Drufke, Annalise Durante, Stephen Durante, Kaitlyn Eichinger, Nadeha Fareed,  Alexandra Faso, Kara Field, Alexander Fischer, Christopher Frane, Theresa Frawley, Kara Fritsche, Diane Fru, Marisa Geropoulos, Jay Gosalia, Kathryn Grouzard, Katheryn Haas, Nicole Hartnett, Lauren Haugh, Chelsea Henshaw, Bernadette Herrera, Augustus Ilag, Ryan Jorgensen, Michael Keane, Martin Kocaj, Jaclyn Kornacker, Jessica Kratofil, Steven Krauss, Rachel Kuhn, Kelly Malinowski, Eleni Manos, Kevin McKeown, Gina Mulanthara, Trevro Murphy, Shaina Nonato, Marc Ostrowski, Enrico Palandri, Liana Pasquine, Tapas Patel, Loreli Patschke, Judith Pellegrino, Kyle Phelan, Ashley Prochazka, Joseph Rahman, Christina Reninger, Elizabeth Riggio, Daisy Rodriguez, Laura Seaborg, Jessica Sibigtroth, Andrea Smith, Joseph Solomon, Madeline Sommers, Sami Sous, Ulyka Terrenal, Paige Thompson, Chloe Turner, Megan Vanduyne, Christopher Warmann, Katie Weiss, Sandra Weitzner, Julia Wesley, Carolyn Wiest, Wade Williams, Kaylee Willis, Megan Yurchik, Sarah Zaubi.

Math Team Highlights
The Lake Park math team competed at the ICTM State Finals in Champaign last Saturday.  Congratulations to Sneha Shah and Kelly Malinowski for their third place finish on the orals team; Mark Hirsbrunner, Zach Gros, Dwani Patel, and Samantha Millikan for the 10th place finish in the Freshmen/Sophomore Relay; and the team's 16th place finish overall.

The math team hosted the 37th Annual Lake Park 8th Grade Math Contest this past Wednesday.  All of our sender schools were invited to participate in the competition.  Lake Park freshmen and sophomore math team students proctored and graded the exams and were responsible for running the competition.
Power of Partnership Awards

The DuPage Area Partnership for College and Career Success hosted their annual Power of Partnerships Awards this week.  Two organizations which partner with our Lake Park Career Internship Program received honors during the ceremony.

Congratulations to the Bloomingdale Chamber of Commerce!  They created a job shadow program with the Career Internship Program, thus allowing 31 students to job shadow at 29 area businesses this past fall.  The students went to the businesses in the morning, then attended the Chamber of Commerce's monthly meeting with their business partner sponsor where they had the opportunity to network with representatives from other local businesses.  The day concluded with a seminar on interviewing tips.

Congratulations also goes to Springwood Middle School!  They have been a partner with the Lake Park Career Internship Program for many years.  This year, three students had the opportunity to intern at the school.  Their experiences included, but were not limited to:  providing tutoring assistance, answering student questions, designing bulletin boards and assisting with lesson planning and delivery.  These experiences provided a wonderful and realistic perspective of what the field of education encompasses and helped the students make more informed decisions regarding their potential careers.
Bob Marino Receives INSPRA Award
Lake Park Board of Education member Bob Marino was recently honored by the Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association (INSPRA) with a Distinguished Service Award for his contributions as a Board of Education member.

When Lake Park High School or the Lake Park Educational Foundation has an event, one person is always sure to be there...Bob Marino.  While Bob is both a Board of Education and Foundation board member, his commitment to Lake Park High School District 108 goes above and beyond even those roles.  He is the friendly face in our East Campus hallway greeting our staff by name.  He is the person running to Sam's Club to buy carafes for our Friends of Lake Park Breakfast.  He is in the community seeking support for the Foundation.  The passion he brings to our larger community on behalf of Lake Park is phenomenal.

Before joining the Board of Education, Bob chaired the District's Facilities Planning Committee.  He was instrumental in determining the facility needs of our two campuses.  Bob chaired the Referendum Committee.  He harnessed the energy of parents, community members, and staff to campaign.  Because seven towns fall within the Lake Park boundary area, a comprehensive strategy needed to be developed.

After leading the successful referendum, Bob ran for the District 208 Board of Education.  He has served on the Board since 2003 and is currently its Vice President and a member of the Facility Needs Committee.  He has also served as a Lake Park Educational Foundation trustee for the past seven years.  He chairs the Board Development committee and has worked with the Foundation's Executive Director to identify potential board members from business and community leaders.  Bob is also on the Foundation's Resource Development Committee, which has been responsible for increasing the organization's revenue substantially during the past two years.

Bob has underwritten the costs of the Foundation's newly-created Alumni Club.  The Foundation is hosting a variety of events to attract more alumni back to our school and Bob's donation allows it to provide complimentary refreshments without using general funds.

Whether it has been spearheading our referendum, serving on our Board of Education, or seeking more people to get active with our Foundation, the bottom line is that Bob's efforts have significantly strengthened the ties that Lake Park has to ALL of the communities it serves.
Car Show Next Friday

Lake Park is hosting its 4th Annual Car Show next Friday, May 15 from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at East Campus.  Individuals, families and friends are encouraged to attend this event which is organized by the students in our automotive classes.  Awards will be given in the following categories:  50's, 60's, 70's, hot rod, mopar, import and sound system.  See you there!
European Trip Planned for Next Year

The Lake Park High School music department has been invited to participate in the 100th anniversary of its German sister school in Hamburg, the Helene-Lange-Gymnasium.  This tour is scheduled for June 7-17, 2010 which will include performances with student ensembles in Germany and England.  Possible additional concerts may be held in Belgium and with one of the U.S. military bands which will be on tour in Europe during that period.

Lake Park's German sister school is a college prep high school called the Helen-Lange-Gymnasium.  Like Lake Park, it has two campuses about a half mile apart. It is a bilingual school serving students from in grades 5 through 13.  A major part of the experience for our students will be the opportunity to stay in the home of a HLG student as well as guided tours of Hamburg's cultural and historical sites.

Mental Health Awareness Month

The month of May has been designated National Mental Health Month and yesterday was National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day.  This year's theme is "Thriving in the Community" and emphasizes that high school students who receive the services they need are more likely to have positive outcomes, such as better grades, and less likely to experience negative outcomes, such as involvement with the criminal justice system.

A mental health condition which emerges in young people during their adolescence or early adulthood is schizophrenia.  Contrary to popular opinion, it does not mean "split or multiple personality".  While individuals with this condition are often portrayed as violent on television or in the movies, they are more likely to be victims of violence rather than perpetrators.  They also tend to be shy and socially withdrawn.  Symptoms include:  delusions, hallucinations, and disordered thinking.  Additional symptoms may include: social withdrawal, extreme apathy, diminished motivation, and blunted emotional expression.  Symptoms can be controlled by consultation with a mental health care professional.  This information was provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  Additional information is available by clicking here.
