Superintendent's Column:
We're down to the final 100 yards in our race towards the end of the school year. With only four days left, our students will be completing their final exams next week and our seniors will graduate next Saturday.
We do have a final weekend of athletic competitions with six boys qualifying to compete in the State track and field meet in Charleston tomorrow and Saturday. Best wishes to Dan Block, Kevin Thomas, Greg Haugh, Dave Zillner, and Craig Watson. Our softball team won the first regional game against Rolling Meadows this past Tuesday and plays Schaumburg on Saturday for the regional championship. Our baseball team plays Addison Trail today and the winner of that game will play St. Charles North on Saturday for the regional championship.
This Saturday, our juniors and seniors will celebrate their prom (I Don't Want to Miss a Thing) at Venuti's. Seven hundred will attend the prom and a record 500 will participate in the post-prom cruise about the Mystic Blue. The weather should cooperate and I hope all the students enjoy this special evening.
I would like to thank everyone for their hard work this past year - students, parents, and staff. Best wishes for a safe and relaxing summer!
Sincerely,
John K. Butts, Ph.D. |

Golden Lance Winners Honored |
|
Volunteers fill a special role at Lake Park High School. Our programs would not be nearly as successful without the dedication of volunteers working with our activities, athletics, and parent groups.
At Monday night's Board of Education meeting, eight very special individuals and businesses were honored with Lake Park Golden Lance awards for generously sharing their time, talent, or resources with our school. The Golden Lance Awards honor outstanding volunteers and contributors in three categories: * VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR: An individual who has distinguished himself/herself through service to Lake Park High School.
· Rory Blanchard - Rory is a Lake Park alum, having graduated in 2004. He has continued to stay active with Snowball (a drug and alcohol prevention program teaching leadership skills) since then by volunteering his time to attend meetings, training sessions, and the Snowball Retreat in March. Rory is a paramedic and also brings his supplies to the retreat to help any student who may be injured. Rory is a shining role model for Lake Park students, having the ability to relate to them in a special way. This year marks the 25th anniversary for Snowball at Lake Park High School.
· Sean Lovelace - Sean taught at WC this past semester, working with our special needs students. He also volunteered as a wrestling coach with the varsity team. He had a huge impact on the team's success this season - showing great wrestling technique and was also a great motivator to our athletes. At the end of the high school season, Sean coached ten students as they competed in the AAU Freshman/Sophomore State series. He also started a USA Freestyle/Greco Roman club (Suburban Sprawl) hosted by LPHS. The club offers opportunities for area kids to improve on their wrestling skill. · Nancy Skie - Nancy has been a key board member of the Lake Booster Club for several years, initially serving as the Director of Book Stores and most recently as its Vice President. She has been instrumental in raising the awareness of the Booster Club among both coaches and Lake Park parents. Additionally, Nancy was key in promoting the Booster's scholarship program, increasing the number of applicants five-fold this year. Regardless of the task, Nancy is available to lend her advice, support, and time. Nancy believes in what she does and gives from the bottom of her heart with no expectation of anything in return.
* FRIEND OF LAKE PARK: An individual, group, or business that has supported Lake Park High School through contributions to the District. Contributions may be in the form of volunteer time, money, or in-kind donations.
· HR Imaging Partners, Inc. - HR Imaging was recognized for its commitment to the Lake Park Educational Foundation. HR Imaging, owned by Jerry Halterman, has gone above and beyond by making a five-year, $15,000 financial commitment to the Lake Park High School Educational Foundation. This means an ongoing gift of $3,000 per year to the Foundation through the year 2014. · Friendly Ford - Joe Kean, the owner of Friendly Ford, is a constant supporter and donor of various Roselle community events. This year, Friendly Ford was the main contributor to the SADD SIP program, donating the grand prize of $5,000 towards either a college scholarship or a car. Over 500 Lake Park students turned in completed contracts for this program, which just began this past November. Part of the reason for the success of this program was the possibility of winning the grand prize.
· Randall and Susan Pearson - The Pearsons hosted a foreign exchange student from our sister school in Hamburg, Germany this past fall semester. Hosting Nancy allowed her to study at Lake Park without having to go through an expensive exchange service. Because of the Pearson's generosity, Nancy was able to have a wonderful experience at Lake Park, improving her English skills, participating in numerous school clubs. This wouldn't have been possible without the Pearson's help. Even though their son Jeremy graduated from Lake Park in 2007, the Pearson's have continued to be involved with the school and have been a wonderful asset to the foreign exchange program at Lake Park.
· Tish Petrucci - Tish has been a leader among volunteers at Lake Park. Tish has been active with the Lake Park Partners in Education, having served as the group's treasurer, website coordinator, and a sender school liaison over the past four years. Tish initiated the School Directory project two years ago, starting with a blank piece of paper and making it what it is today. She also volunteers for the Lake Park Band and other community groups. Tish has definitely contributed to making Lake Park better through her service to the community. DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN OF THE YEAR: An individual who embodies the Spirit of the Lancer through his or her participation at Lake Park High School events.
· Linda Szramiak - Linda exemplifies the Golden Lancer Distinguished Citizen of the Year award. She was instrumental in the leadership of the Band Auxiliary over the past four years. Linda put in many long hours at practices and events, and encouraged new parents to become involved. She was able to plan and execute the entire marching band season thanks to her vision, people skills, hard work, and dedication. She was always very encouraging to the students, cheering them on and bringing them little goodie bags.
Linda was also very involved with Colorguard and Winterguard. Thanks to her cooking skills, the girls had great home cooked meals on the road. And all she had was a crock pot in a hotel restroom! Linda spent so much time with the girls, she became known as Mama Schram.
In addition to helping with the Auxiliary, Linda spent countless hours with the Market Day program at LP. This fundraising helped many other groups besides LP Marching Band. She was also involved with the Lake Park Partners in Education. |

$5,000 Winner Announced |
|
The culmination of this year's SADD Student Incentive Program occured last Saturday at the Battle of the Bands competition at West Campus. Over 500 Lake Park students were entered in the drawing. They received raffle tickets either by returning a completed safety contract or participating in any number of safety activities since last Fall.
Congratulations to sophomore Manal Ayyad, whose name was drawn to receive the $5,000 prize. Manal can choose to use the money either towards college or a car purchased at Friendly Ford. Pretty lucky for a 15-year-old who won't get her license until next year!
Thank you to Sgt. Dave Hourigan of the Roselle Police Department who worked hard in seeking donations from local businesses for monthly raffle prizes at both campuses. His dedication to the program and Lake Park's collaboration with the Roselle Police Department was instrumental to its success.
No, we didn't forget the Battle of the Bands -- The votes have been counted and this year's winner is Here Comes the Neighborhood, which will be performing at the Roselle Fourth of July Fest. Congratulations to Joe Olson, Will Wisnieski, Stephen Schmuldt, Dustin Eck, and Mikey Giacobbe for winning their second consecutive Battle of the Bands. All of our bands did a fantastic job and we thank everybody who came to show their support! |

Spring Sports Enjoy Successful Seasons |
|
The boys gymnastics team enjoyed the most successful season in Lake Park history. The Lancers captured the Independent League Championship, an IHSA Sectional Team Title, and placed 5th overall in the state of Illinois at the IHSA State Championships. Individually, Gary Soper garnered all-state recognition by placing 2nd in the still rings competition.
The girls soccer team had a record-setting season posting school records for number of wins (15), and fewest losses (6). The team captured an IHSA Regional title, only the second girls soccer regional title in school history. Individually, senior Rachel McMahon was honored as a first team all-state girls soccer player by Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association, making her the first girls soccer player in Lake Park history to earn this honor.
The girls track team advanced three individuals to the IHSA State meet in Charleston, Illinois. Rachel Kruezer competed in pole-vault; Juliet Vogel in the 800 meter run, and Lyndsey Flanagan in the 3200 meter run. Junior Lyndsey Flanagan had a great meet, capturing second place and earning all-state honors. Lyndsey was also an all-state cross country runner this past fall.
The girls badminton team placed second overall in the Upstate Eight Conference and advanced two singles players and one doubles team to the IHSA State Tournament. The doubles team of Katie Mueller and Sarah Pudell qualified for state for the second time in their careers, as did singles player Pearl Evangelista. Singles player Tiffany Parillo enjoyed a great season, capturing an Upstate Eight Conference singles title, an IHSA Sectional singles title, and won 3 matches at the state tournament, making her one of the top returning players next year.
The boys track team advanced five individuals to the IHSA State meet in Charleston, Illinois. Pole vaulters Greg Haugh and David Zillner each qualified for state. This is Greg Haugh's second trip to the state meet as a pole vaulter. Also, Kevin Thomas will compete in the shot put and Craig Watson will compete in the 800 meter run. Dan Block captured sectional championships in both the shot put and the discus and goes to state as the top ranked athlete in Illinois in both events. This past spring, Dan block set a new state of Illinois all-time record in the discus with a throw of 201' 7", breaking a record that was over twenty years old. Dan is the returning state champion in the discus and hopes to defend his discus championship, and add a state championship in shot put to his long accomplishments.
The softball team and baseball teams are currently playing in their respective IHSA Regional tournaments with the softball team playing in the Regional Championship game vs. Schaumburg on Saturday, May 24, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Rolling Meadows High School. The baseball team begins their Regional Tournament on Thursday, May 22, 2008 vs. Addison Trail at high school. Lancers Go Above and Beyond to Help Others |
|
In addition to all the usual end-of-the-year activities, Lake Park students and staff have been busy supporting charities through several recent efforts. Junior Blaine Szablewski organized a dodgeball tournament, held on May 9, to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Thirteen teams entered the competition, helping to raise nearly $700 for this important cause.
Students and staff raised $2,000 for Special Olympics through a unique fundraising event. A school-wide challenge of raising $2,000 was met so Mike Kinsella, Terry Haliw, Patrick Proctor, Dan Graham, Antonio Pietanza, Emilio Lugo, Hadi Ahmed, and Richard Burke all agreed to shave their hair last week! |

Seniors Read for a Lifetime |
|
Four years ago, several seniors embarked on an endeavor with the State of Illinois to read for fun. Robert Gilbert, Blaise Murphy, Kate Pauly, and Katie Schamlzer are the first LPHS students to complete the Read for a Lifetime program all four years. The four students displayed a dedication to reading and to their education in this voluntary program, according to their librarians Aimee Allison and Carolyn Roys.
Students participate in Read for a Lifetime by reading four titles each year from a list of 25 books selected by the state committee. They receive a certificate from Secretary of State Jessie White each year they complete the program, and they will receive a special certificate for their four years of completion in May. |
