Superintendent's Column:

Did you know there are many scholarship opportunities available for Lake Park High School students?  Approximately 20 different scholarships, most of them worth $1,000 each, are available through a variety of Lake Park organizations.

The Lake Park Educational Foundation will be awarding $7,000 through several scholarships to members of the Class of 2008, the Booster Club sponsors two $1,000 scholarships annually, Lake Park Partners in Education awards four $1,000 scholarships, and the Lake Park Education Association awards several $1,000 scholarships.

Other sponsoring organizations include the Hazel Turner Thespian scholarship, the Krystal Diehl SADD Memorial Scholarship, two Lake Park memorial scholarships, and a student council scholarship.  To learn more about any of the scholarships, click here.

Complete guidelines and application forms for these scholarships are available in the Career Center at West Campus.  The deadline for several of the scholarships is April 4, so I encourage students to get the information before Spring Break.

We also have valuable information on additional scholarships and colleges which will be visiting West Campus on the PrepHQ website, which you can access by clicking here.  Your child has a user name and password for this website which will allow you to access it as well.  If you have any difficulty in accessing the website, please contact Jackie Clark (East Campus) at 295-5292 or Kristin Cipriani (West Campus) at 295-5399.

Sincerely,

John K Butts, Ph.D.

East Campus:
ACADEMICS - Matt McCown is a straight-A student with a challenging schedule including four Honors classes.  He works hard to maintain his high grades and sets a great example for others.

ACTIVITIES - Jessica Lopez has sacrificed her study hall to assist students with very special needs.  She is a good friend to the students and an excellent role model.

ATHLETICS - Nathan Schingoethe has worked hard to establish himself as one of the finest swimmers the school has had in a long time.  Although he is just a freshman he has become a leader whom his teammates truly appreciate.

ACHIEVEMENT - Dan Oszczapinski has come a long way as an English student.  He began very reserved in class but has blossomed into a leader in the classroom.  He recently read and comprehended The Alchemist with great sophistication and maturity.

ACADEMICS - Senior Derek Fang participated in the Northern Illinois Math League Competition.  Derek won first place in the "oralist" category, which is an extremely difficult topic in the competition.

ACTIVITIES - Stephanie Reninger is a senior who competed in the State Speech competition.  She is also involved in Group Interpretation, on the Thespian Board and involved in Youth and Government.

ACHIEVEMENT- Samantha Moretti has been tutoring students in the ESL program since first semester and has done a phenomenal job helping our Spanish-speaking students who have limited English skills.  Because of Samantha, one of the students passed Consumer Education.

ATHLETICS - Bryant Honsa's hard work and dedication paid off this year with his first place finish in the 500-yard freestyle at State.  In addition, he broken two school records.  Bryant has pushed his teammates, encouraging them to perform at a different level.

Roselle Police Training Exercise

While Lake Park students and staff are off and out of the building during spring break, the hallways and classrooms of East Campus will transform into a training ground for the Roselle Police Department. Officers from the department will utilize the building for Rapid Response/Active Shooter Deployment Training. They will role play a variety of potentially dangerous scenarios using paint ball-type ammunition and practice encountering armed suspects in order to prepare for any possible similar real life incident. Last year, the Roselle Police Department used West Campus for the same purpose and have alternated with East Campus this year to assist officers in learning the layout of both locations.

School shooting incidents have caused a paradigm-shift in law enforcement training and tactics. Instead of being taught to wait for a SWAT team to arrive, officers receive training on how to take immediate action during incidents that clearly involve a suspect's use of deadly force. In Rapid Response Deployment Training, officers utilize team tactics for dealing with the variety of floor plan situations encountered in schools. Mostly, the training stresses that the first officer and back up officer teams move safely, assertively, and decisively to engage and neutralize the active threat.

Lake Park High School has worked closely with both the Roselle Police Department and Roselle Fire Department in developing safety plans for both campuses.  This prevention training is  key to saving lives in the event of any type of emergency.

Reserve Tickets Now for Oklahoma!

Lake Park High School will present Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic musical Oklahoma!  May 1-4 at the East Campus Dice Auditorium.  Performances are scheduled for May 1 at 7:00 p.m., May 2-3 at 7:30 p.m. and May 4 at 2:00 p.m.  Early ticket orders are encouraged since the performances are expected to sell out.

Set in the Oklahoma Territory in the early 1900's, this joyous celebration of frontier life is a story of tender romance and dangerous passion. Curly, a sunny, good-natured ranch hand and Laurey, the farmer's daughter, at first deny their love and later embrace it after the menacing Jud Fry tries to come between them. The latest exploits of Ado Annie and her ever-patient fiancé, Will, provide comic relief. This ground-breaking musical was the first collaboration between Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. It has become known world-wide with such memorable songs as "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin',"  "People Will Say We're in Love," and of course, the title tune, "Oklahoma!".   Audiences will be singing along with the Lake Park cast of over 90 performers.

The cast includes:
Curley: Ryan Keane
Laurey Williams: Liz Freeman & Mary VanDuyne
Will Parker: Dan Anderson & Andi Mele Ado Ado Ado Annie Carnes: Angela Roiniotis

Aunt Eller: Hannah Jones
Jud Fry: Dario Carrion & Paul Gray
Ali Hakim: Jeff Barak

Tickets are $7 for adults; $5 for non-Lake Park students; and free to all seniors, children under 13, and Lake Park students/staff with their school ID.   Tickets can be ordered in advance by calling 630-295-5313 or emailing lptheatreboxoffice@lphs.org. Join us for this truly American classic.

PSAE Schedule Information
Parents:  Please note that juniors will be taking the Prairie State Achievement Exam (PSAE) on April 23 & 24 this year.  This test is a state-required assessment that all students must satisfy prior to high school graduation.  The PSAE measures the extent to which students have mastered the Illinois Learning Standards for English, reading, writing, mathematics and science.

Seniors will not be in attendance on April 23 and 24.  Freshmen and sophomores will attend classes on both of these half days.

Juniors will be completing required PSAE paperwork on April 17 during periods 1 and 2.  Therefore, seniors may arrive at West Campus ready to begin classes at 9:00 a.m. on April 17.  West Campus will have an adjusted schedule that day and all periods will meet.

Abraham Lincoln Book Award List
The Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award List is out and Lake Park Freshman Karl Schulze was part of the selection committee this year.  Eight students selected from 27 applications sent from 12 schools around the state joined 21 librarians on March 1 to pare a list of 75 books down to 22 that comprise the list students read from for the 2008-2009 year.

"I really enjoyed participating in Abe," Karl said.  Karl was an alternate but as one reader could not come, Karl took her spot.  He had to read ten of the 75 titles on the list before attending the session but had only three months to do so.  Karl is also in Honors classes so to add this to his work load shows how much he wants to promote reading to others.

The process starts two years prior with participating schools sending in nominations.  A nominations committee narrows that list to 75.  The November prior to the list coming out, each person on the reader committee receives a list of ten of the books from this list to read by the meeting three months later.  They are asked to score the books based on teen appeal, timeliness, quality, lasting value and other traits.  Those scores are used to help the committee as they look at the books but it does not mean a book will or won't make the list.  It takes a vote of three-fourths majority for a book to make it on to the list of 22 with the student readers automatically placing four titles with no adult vetoes.

"This is very much a student driven list," said Carolyn Roys, Lake Park's East Campus librarian and member of the executive committee for the Abe Lincoln award.  "Karl was a valuable member of the team and one book we both love is one he fought to have on the list.  Karl is the first freshman to be selected to serve and Lake Park can be proud," said Mrs. Roys.

The 2008-09 Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award List includes :
After the Wreck, I Picked Myself Up, Spread My Wings and Flew Away  --  Joyce Carol Oates
The Bonemender  --  Holly Bennett
*Catch  --  Will Leitch
