Biology Takes Center Stage!

As we send out our first newsletter of 2012, Dallas TeleLearning hopes that this year brings you enjoyment and new opportunities.

We've kicked off the new year with our newest course addition, Biology for Non-Majors, which is currently being piloted by several faculty across Texas and within the Dallas County Community College District.

Dr. Brian R. Shmaefsky of Lone Star College in Kingwood, Texas, recently commented on the lab component stating "the lab is excellent - it fits the level of content covered in the chapter unit and is appropriate for non-majors biology.  The pedagogical value exceeds many face-to-face labs."

The LeCroy Center's Provost, Pam Quinn would like to thank the course development team, as well as the marketing and business services that assisted in the project. "This course will be used throughout the country and many students will benefit from it for years to come. Congratulations to everyone for a job well done!"

The Biology for Non-Majors lab-scienece course is now available for purchase through our publishing partner, McGraw-Hill, and/or may be licensed by institutions through Dallas TeleLearning.  Click here for a course preview. For more information, email us at tlearn@dcccd.edu

During the month of February we celebrate African American History month, honoring the contribution of African Americans throughout history.

Please take a moment to view a clip from the Dallas TeleLearning Digital Resource Repository entitled "The Legacy of Struggle." This brief clip from the course "Transforming America: U.S. History Since 1877," focuses on the struggle for freedom and equality as well as the legacy of women in the civil rights movement.

Focusing On Nutrition

The last week of February is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. In the United States, as many as 10 million females and 1 million males struggle with eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia. Millions more are struggling with binge eating disorder.

The aim of NEDA Week is to prevent eating disorders and body image issues, reducing the stigma surrounding eating disorders and improving access to treatment.  The Dallas TeleLearning course "Nutrition Pathways" has sections on eating disorders as well as tips for maintaining a healthy nutritious diet, such as:

  • analyzing personal eating habits
  • identifying and using lower fat substitutes
  • reading food labels
  • modifying favorite recipes to reflect sound nutrition practices
  • identifying vegetables which can be used in place of meat for protein
  • distinguishing between nutrition facts and fads
