Welcome to Walking TALL News - February

Greetings!

I start with the wonderful news that an endangered sub species of giraffe has been born at Marwell zoo, read all about it here - and giraffes have made the news more than once this month, with the great story about Sainsbury's Tiger bread being renamed. If you didn't see the story it was a fantastic piece of PR and corporate branding. It just shows that a little bit of effort from one team member really can make a huge impact.

I believe that customer service is going to be paramount this year, and those companies and organisations who focus on developing their team will have the winning edge. Research by Henley Business School found that 75% of consumers believe customer service standards in the UK are at an all-time low and
62% feel no loyalty to retailers or service providers as a result of feeling undervalued as a customer. Shocking statistics - but a great opportunity for companies to stand out form the crowd by delivering what they say they will.

With this in mind we are updating our e-learning course to a fabulous new online studio. Many companies find it difficult to release a whole team for a day or more on a training course and the popularity of e-learning at your convenience is growing. Have a look at our innovative course which takes just 10 minutes out of the day to deliver valuable bite-sized training from your desk. Get in contact with us if you would like to discuss pricing for group licensing.

We are enjoying our work in the education sector and finding that schools in UK and in USA are interested in our methodology. If you have a student or graduate in the house our next Walking TALL Education course is on April 4th - see more details on the right. This day is designed to help those job seeking to be ahead of the competition and give them that all important confidence in presenting themselves.

Finally, I am personally have fun and being kept very busy working on some intensive executive brand programmes across a 6-month period for some blue-chip organisations. Not so much travel for the first half of the year therefore, but from July onwards it will all start again!

See you in March.

Best wishes,

Lesley Signature

Why Body Language is Key for Leaders

The latest research in neuroscience and psychology has proven that body language is crucial to leadership effectiveness according to Carol Kinsey Goman writer of a recent article on the subject in Forbes Magazine.

Body language has become less of a focus in the last few years though after we all went overboard on the topic a decade or so ago. But if you are in a leadership role it is crucial that you understand what your non verbal communication is saying to your team. As crucial in fact as what theirs is saying to you. You need to understand that the way body language can underscore what a person is saying, can also undermine or even contradict it. Nonverbal signals can literally make or break a leader's success.

For leaders in multi-national organisations it becomes even more complex. With the new global workforce many organisations have, understanding diverse cultures and multi-cultural teams and how to motivate and engage them becomes even trickier. This was something Lesley found out first hand on a speaking engagement recently in Iran. She consciously had to adjust her behaviour and non verbal communication in order not to offend.

Executive coaching will focus on making you a more effective communicator and help you discover what your body language is saying. We provide coaching on building executive presence, gravitas, presentational impact and delivery, and image.  The essential starting point however, is clarifying and defining your personal brand.

5 Top Tips to Sell Yourself at Interviews

If you were asked to sell a product where would you start? Possibly by finding out why that product is great, what makes it unique from the competition and what benefits it would bring to it's new owner. You can use all of these when selling yourself in an interview. Here are 5 tips to get the interviewer to buy:

Preparation and Research - just like the product above, take some time to prepare answers to the question "why should we employ you". What is unique about you, what have you done that your competitors may not, and what benefits will you bring to the company? This isn't just about looking at you though, you also need to research the company thoroughly to enable you to answer why you and your personal brand would be a great fit for this role.

Assessing the Personality Traits of Employees to "Fit" the Role

When it comes to hiring people who will be holding a key role in the organisation it is important to assess their Personal Brand and whether they will fit with the culture of the organisation, the country or role they are filling.

As organisations move into the global market, it has been proven that diversity of teams and experience improve both their financial performance and reputation according to a recent survey by Ernst and Young.

The survey found that the leaders of successful organizations capitalize on the richness of their global workforce by seeking out and implementing ideas from a variety of individuals with different backgrounds, skills and experiences. We are now starting to understand the benefits in widening the talent pool, and making it more diverse to improve the performance of an organisation.

It is important to ensure that the company culture embraces this need for diversity, and how team members can understand each other better, making a more productive working environment.

Great Customer Service from Sainsburys

Did you see the story of the little girl who wrote to Sainsburys asking why Tiger bread wasn't called Giraffe bread?

In a great piece of PR Sainsbury's customer manager Chris King happened to agree with Lily and responded with a letter that started: "I think renaming the bread giraffe bread is a brilliant idea - it does look more like the blotches on a giraffe than the stripes on a tiger, doesn't it?"

When the little girl's mother then uploaded the letters to Facebook the campaign to get the bread renamed began.

A spokesman for the store said: 'In response to overwhelming customer feedback, from today we will be changing our tiger bread to giraffe bread.

Of course at Walking TALL we think Sainsburys got this just right - but then we are biased in favour of the Giraffe!
