DECEMBER  2011 - Wishing You A Wonderful Christmas From The Team at Walking TALL

Welcome to Walking TALL News - December

Greetings!

With only a few weeks to go until the end of 2011 we are busy at Walking TALL planning for the new year, and savouring some of the wonderful experiences of the past year. Whilst this year has been difficult for many of us with the economic climate, we have continued to work with new clients and create new products and programmes - so count ourselves very fortunate to have such wonderful customers, who see the benefit of Personal Branding to their employees and businesses.

November was an amazing month of new experiences with my speaking trip to Iran where my first issue was having something warm enough to wear. We arrived to deep snow! I will write all about this trip in my blog in the next few weeks, but suffice to stay I thoroughly enjoyed it and the people were wonderful.

Then it was on to Istanbul to work with Marriott Hotels and to speak at their Central and Eastern Europe HR Conference. I was looked after extremely well as always by Marriott and had a very positive reception. It was good to see some familiar faces from Marriott work a few years ago! As the month ends I am at a convention in Toronto and also have a few days in the beautiful city of Montreal, via Niagara Falls, which I have always wanted to see.

Finally this month I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of you and wish you a wonderful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

See you in January!

Best wishes,

Lesley Signature

Is Bad Management Costing You Hundreds Of man Hours And Thousands Of pounds?

According to an article in Personnel Today, bad management could be costing UK businesses more than £19 billion in lost working hours every year.

A report by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) found that three-quarters of employees waste almost two hours of their working time every week because of their managers' inefficiency.

Management practices including unclear communication, lack of support or direction and micro-management were cited as some of the problems encountered by employees. More worryingly 13% of respondents had also witnessed more serious offences including discrimination and bullying.

3 Tips For Creating a Job Application That Get Noticed

Most agencies and headhunters now use tracking systems for applications. This can mean that unless you have the relevant keywords that the system is looking for in a particular role yours may get overlooked.

This is why it is important to ensure that your application is tailored for each job. This is time consuming but should give your application a better chance of being in the running.

Here are our top tips to get your application noticed:

Keywords - read through the application and pick out specific words that you can add to your CV or application letter. For example if the advert mentions strong communication skills make sure you use those words in your application.

How To Project Authority And "Walk TALL"

As a professional speaker I have had many years of practice of speaking to large groups and getting the audience's attention. This is a skill that can be learned and should be practiced - you can't have authority if you aren't properly prepared. These points are relevant in both presentations and meetings where you have to get your opinion heard.

Here are my top tips:

Slow yourself down and breath - by pausing between your messages you are allowing the audience to process what you have just said before you move onto the next point. Breathing steadily will also calm you and you will sound less nervous. Practice speaking slowly before the event, so that your words flow freely and you are less likely to forget or lose track of what you are saying.

In a meeting try to speak early, the longer you leave it to get your point in the harder you will find it. Feel ownership of the room - you have a right to be there so don't sit on the fringes, get into the centre of the action. Lean slightly forward and put your elbows on the table, take ownership of the space around you, and wh

Get to the point and stay on message, if you start to waffle or drone on for too long you are likely to be interrupted and your message will be lost. Practice speaking without using fill in words like ums and ahs, these words dilute your message and make you sound nervous and unfocused.

Being only 5' 1 1/2" I have had to use all the help I can get to project authority. So I hope these tips have helped you.
