NOVEMBER  2011

Welcome to Walking TALL News - November

Greetings!

I can't believe it's November already - it has been a hectic few months with more travel this month too. As I mentioned in our last newsletter, November sees me travelling to Iran for the first time, as well as to Istanbul and Toronto.

October saw the very sad death of Steve Jobs, a man who had such a huge impact, and distinctive Personal Brand - there are few people who could elicit this tribute from the US President? "Steve was among the greatest of American innovators - brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it," What a great Personal Brand statement that is! Many words have been written about him, including my tribute which you can read here.

Whilst in San Diego last week I had the pleasure of meeting Mike Richardson who's new book Wheelspin: The Agile Executive's Manifesto - Accelerate Your Growth, Leverage Your Value, Beat Your Competition goes on sale this month. I love the word "agility" relating to how businesses need to operate in today's world. The book sounds fascinating and so very needed for businesses today.

We are already planning our workshops and booking coaching into the New Year so if you are in the process of setting training budgets or making plans for next year please let us know how we can help.

Finally we have an upcoming event in December for Executive Secretaries and PAs. What better way to show your PA how valued they are than by investing in their ongoing development? On the 6th December we will be running a special Personal Branding workshop for these often unsung heroes. Treat your PA to high impact, fun and inspiring day which will get them fired up for the New Year.

See you in December!

Best wishes,

Lesley Signature

What Does Your Desk Say About Your Personal Brand?

I'm The Creative Type!
Your desk might not look as drastic as the one on the right, but do you really notice how bad it is? What does your desk say about your personal brand? If your desk is a sloppy mess does that mean your work is too? To an outsider who doesn't know you well that is just what you are telling them.

Or are you the neat, methodical person who has everything in labeled piles? Does that mean that you aren't spontaneous or creative? What impression do you want to give visitors to the office about you when you aren't there. If all they have to go on is the state of your desk, is it doing you any favours?

Walking TALL for Students...
"How do you weigh an elephant without using a weigh machine?" - and Other Interview Questions!

When you are first starting out in the job market the thing you will probably fear most is the interview process. When you are invited for an interview you will no doubt be nervous after all a lot depends on the outcome. So it makes sense to get plenty of practice in ahead of time.

Ask amongst your network of friends, parents friends and relations if they know of people that would be willing to test interview you. If they agree ask them to try to make the process as formal as possible so it feels something like the real interview would. Before the event do your homework and find out as much as you can about the company and the people interviewing you.

Find out the kind of questions you may be asked, including some very strange ones...

Earlier last month I went to Professional Speaking Association Annual Conference at The Hilton Hotel in Coventry. What could have been an irritating incident actually became a lesson in excellent customer care. On arrival in my room I discovered there was no soap in the bathroom and I was told that it wouldn't be replenished until the next day. Feeling a bit miffed I tweeted the following:

"Can't believe #Hilton Coventry have NO soap stock left! Apparently it will be here tomorrow! Who's in charge of stock control I wonder"

Imagine my surprise when less than half an hour later this came back from @HiltonOnline:

"@LesleyEverett We apologize for the inconvenience and are looking into this matter. A follow up e-mail has been sent to the e-mail address listed on your reservation."

This proves that not only do The Hilton Group care and respond to what is being said about them on Social media, but they are also actively monitoring the use of their name (as I hadn't used their @ twitter handle), responding almost instantly and following up. Which they did when I thanked them on twitter for sorting the problem. Even more impressive when you realise that the service is run from the USA, and they had emailed and tweeted me.

It's never the problem in the end that projects the strongest brand message, it the people behavior intervention and the way it is handled that speaks volumes about the brand. How is your brand being projected via your people?
