Welcome to our June Newsletter.
We've had several special events in the UK since our last newsletter, and plenty of brand lessons learned from them, which we've had fun including a few of for you here!
Surprisingly, we've chosen not to talk about the brand reputations and hairstyles of certain high profile footballers and celebrities this month, as we feel much has been said already. However the extent of coverage and discussion on social media just continues to illustrate the importance of ensuring your on-line brand and reputation is carefully managed. I'm currently working with some pro footballers, which has been really interesting - so more on that next month.
Similarly with Cheryl Cole and the very obvious PR stunt played out with the "is she or isn't she an X Factor judge" fiasco. Personal brands need to be very carefully nurtured and managed and the only winner here seems to be Simon Cowell's bank balance. It will be interesting to see how she handles this fallout over the coming months.
Hope you enjoy reading, and let us know what you think - we always value your opinions.
Enjoy the summer!

| Walking TALL at University |
Sharon and Sue have delivered Walking TALL's very first course specifically for University students.
They have been delighted with the initial feedback from the day and Walking TALL is looking forward to developing a nationwide programme for the University sector.
We know having a powerful and consistent Personal Brand is absolutely critical in the current employment market and the students left with some key tools to differentiate themselves in an overcrowded job market.
One student said 'The course was an eye opener for me, made me ask a lot of questions of myself.... The content was relevant fun and very informative.... and I believe that this will be extremely valuable to me in the future... I personally think you should come in and teach a module on my course.'
Another said 'It was a great experience that created an awareness in me in the way I interact with others... plays a big role and it's up to me to manage my brand'.
Walking TALL is looking forward to progressing this course further, watch this space!

| Catherine - Duchess of Cambridge - British High Street Style Icon | It's great to see that Catherine - as she is now to be known - is supporting the British high street. For her meeting with Barack & Michelle Obama earlier this month, she chose another dress from Reiss (her official engagement photo dress was also Reiss) The dress sold out both in-store and online by the end of the day, and even crashed the company's website!
Read the article on the Daily Mail website, and see the dress, by clicking here.

The Rise of the Royal Brand
It doesn't seem that long ago that we witnessed the Queen's annus horribilus but suddenly most of the the Royal Family can't put a foot wrong. It has to be said that the Queen seldom comes in for criticism but her visit to Ireland a few weeks ago, was nothing short of a triumph, from the moment she arrived, dressed in green, as a complement to her hosts, to the opening of her much anticipated speech in Gaelic.

The Obamas Come To Town!
Like our Royal Family, the Obama Brand is going from strength to strength, with some fantastic news coverage of the state visit recently.
With the emphasis firmly on the "special relationship" between our countries, there does seem to be some genuine warmth between The Obamas, The Royals and the Prime Minister. Just one small faux pas, which wasn't his fault - the playing of the National Anthem before he had finished his speech at the state banquet.
President Obama seems keen to show his human side with both himself and The First Lady serving at the BBQ at No. 10, and his doubles table tennis match with The Prime Minister and a group of school children.
Understanding and managing the etiquette involved in a visit to the Palace must be very nerve racking - whoever you are. The President and First Lady seem to be coping exceptionally well though.
Yet again we see authenticity make a huge impact. A great book on the subject is "Authentic Leadership" by Bill George. In this book, Mr George highlights the need to establish a set of clear values, to be transparent with them and then not to compromise on them. Not always easy, but his research illustrates that the most successful leaders get this aspect of their brand right. In our experience with working with senior executives, we find they are often the least likely to be clear about their value set and expressing it. |
Dress Code - Get It Wrong At Your Peril
With thoughts of the Royal Wedding, the President's state visit and events like Royal Ascot on the horizon comes the whole dilemma of dress code. Get it wrong and it can be extremely embarrassing especially if you have the full focus of the press on you. Some people of course will do this deliberately with the rationale that any attention is better than none! Some Winners: - That Wedding dress - perfect for her and the occasion
- Princess Beatrice's Hat - it would have been a loser but good on her for raising £81,000 for charity by selling it on ebay
- The Middleton Family - all impeccable on the day
- Michelle Obama's Tom Ford dress and evening gloves for the state banquet
And Losers: - Samantha Cameron's lack of hat at the wedding, all ladies were asked to wear a hat
- Victoria Beckham's Heels - some of the press descriptions are un-repeatable, but surely not a wise choice for a pregnant woman
- David Beckham - although he looked immaculate in his morning suit, managed to get his OBE medal on the wrong lapel
- Mrs Clinton's cropped trousers for her visit to Buckingham Palace
It's all about appropriate dressing, which is one of the most debated topics in our workshops! The answer in a nutshell is that there are no rules, just guidelines and the ones we recommend you to consider when deciding what is appropriate are: - Who is the client/audience?
- What are their expectations of you/your company?
- What is the situation or environment?
- What are your objectives?
- Is your outfit reflective of your personal brand?
Consider these and you'll get it right! Photo - Getty Images
