The way you think and talk about yourself gives away a lot and uncovers beliefs about yourself that you may not even be aware of. However it gives a lot of clues to other people about what you believe about yourself.
For example, do you often find yourself?:
- Talking down about yourself
- Apologising for what you say and do
- Thinking self-critical and angry thoughts
- Embarrassed to talk of your talents and successes
- Comparing yourself unfavourably with others
- Afraid to put forward your ideas in case you look silly
If so, it could be you hold an unhelpful and untrue belief about yourself which leads you to self-sabotaging kind of behaviour and can lead to a lot of unhappiness and dissatisfaction.
These beliefs often relate to something (or things) that happened back in our childhood when an adult in authority said or did something which we didn't have the maturity at that point to deal with. The result can be that we unwittingly go through life feeling less than deserving, unworthy and so on. The impact is huge and usually negative.
However when you understand that what happened was not necessarily your fault and there could be numerous other explanations, you can start to turn things round.
Next time you start to be self-critical, ask yourself to STOP and rephrase what you just said or thought in a more positive vein. For example, instead of thinking "That was really stupid of me", you could replace it with something like "I could have done better than that. I'll know what to do next time."
If you've been used to thinking this way since early childhood, it won't be surprise that it will take a bit of practice to change, but you CAN do it if you want to. The results will be that you can start to love who you are (even the dodgy bits!) and love your life. This is literally life-changing stuff and it works!
