Washington DC VA Medical Center: Honor Their Service with Yours

Ongoing Opportunities: The Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center is one of the most visible and dynamic facilities in the VA system. This tertiary care teaching facility provides acute general and specialized services in medicine, surgery, neurology and psychiatry, as well offering nursing home care unit treatment, a satellite Substance Abuse Clinic and three Vet Centers. The medical center's amazing staff provide care to more than 50,000 DC, MD and VA veterans each year, and that success is due in part to their dedicated volunteers. Learn more about volunteering with or donating to the Center and available volunteer opportunities, fill out a Volunteer Application or email the VA Voluntary Service Office.

Blue Star Families: Honoring the Sacrifice of Military Families

Specific & Ongoing Local Opportunities: There are millions of active duty, Reserve and National Guard Service members serving our country. Each of them leaves behind a family when they deploy, a family that participates in the service members' sacrifice, but is often overlooked. Blue Star Families was formed in 2008 by a group of military spouses to raise the awareness of the challenges of military family life. Blue Star Families currently has various, specific volunteer positions at their Herndon, VA location, as well as ongoing opportunities with their Books on Bases program, special events, chapter support and more. Blue Star Families also encourages interested individuals to participate in Operation Appreciation, a letter-writing campaign that connects civilians with military families, service men and women, and veterans. Learn more about volunteering with Blue Star Families or contact them for more information.

Veterans Consortium Pro Bono Program: Fighting for Veterans

Ongoing Opportunities: They fought for us, now you can fight for them. The Veterans Consortium Pro Bono Program (Pro Bono Program) was created in 1992 with a dual mission: provide assistance to unrepresented veterans or family members who have filed appeals at the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims and to recruit and train attorneys in veterans' law. The Pro Bono Program provides free training to volunteer attorneys who agree to counsel and/or represent at least one veteran/VA claimant before the Veterans Court, ensuring veterans receive the help they need to prove entitlement to VA benefits. To learn more, download the Pro Bono Program brochure or email Jolene Duncan-Gould or Meg Bartley.
