Robert Egger to Keynote Serve DC May 9th Annual Conference: Register Today!

Robert EggerOne more reason to register today: Serve DC is thrilled to announce local community advocate and activist and DC Central Kitchen (DCCK) and CForward Founder and President Robert Egger will give the keynote address at Serve DC's 2012 Annual Conference, Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown Hotel. 

 

2012 Annual ConferenceWith the theme, "Sustaining a Community of Service," this dynamic day of programming and networking includes renowned experts from local and national service-based organizations, including the Center for Nonprofit Advancement,  City Year Washington, DC,  DC Office of Disability Rights,  DC Public Schools Office of Family & Public EngagementGirl Scouts of the Nation's Capital,  HandsOn Greater DC Cares,   Higher AchievementIONA Senior Services, and the  Latin American Youth Center (LAYC), and interactive workshops and presentations designed specifically to help participants maximize their potential and achieve and exceed their goals.

More than 1,000 Youth Give Back Across the City for Global Youth Service Day 2012

GYSD 2012 Volunteers

More than 1,000 youth, youth advocates and community volunteers celebrated Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), April 20-22, 2012, with more than a dozen service projects across the District. 
 
On Saturday, April 21, Serve DC hosted the official citywide kickoff and signature service project at the Metropolitan Community Church of Washington, DC. Project partners, including the DC Youth Advisory Council (DCYAC), We Are Family, and Youth Service America, joined volunteers from Girl Scouts of the Nation's Capital Troop #745 and Denison University to pack and deliver more than 300 bags of groceries for local senior in the Shaw neighborhood. Mayor Vincent C. Gray and Youth Service America President and CEO Steve Culbertson were were on hand to give remarks and meet with volunteers. As  DC GYSD Lead Agency for the 12th consecutive year, Serve DC provides grants of up to $500 to organizations planning collaborative, youth-led service projects that address pressing community issues. 2012 Service Project Mini-Grant Competition winners included: Capital City Public Charter SchoolDC SCORESSasha Bruce Youthwork and Turning the Page. CERT Volunteers Test Emergency Skills with Serve DC & FEMS Spring Training Drill

CERT DrillOn April 13 and 14, Serve DC, in partnership with DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services (DC FEMS), hosted a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Spring Training Drill and Demonstration at Anacostia Park Skate Pavilion. The drill provided CERT trainees with a realistic practice setting and tested their emergency skills and knowledge. Check out photos from the CERT Spring Training Drill on Flickr!

 

Serve DC's CERT program provides free training to people who live or work in the District to better prepare them to respond to emergencies and disasters. CERT volunteers provide critical support to first responders and immediate assistance to victims, and also help organize spontaneous volunteers. For more information on CERT training or to register for upcoming classes visit Serve DC online or contact Jason Williamson.


Serve DC is Now Accepting 2012 Fall Service Days Grant Applications: 
Up to $5,000 in Grants will be Awarded

Autumn Leaves

Serve DC is offering grants of up to $5,000 to support service projects with a focus on disability inclusion for 2012 Fall Seasons of Service Days, which include the 9/11 National Day of Service & Remembrance and National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

 

Eligible applicants include local nonprofit and faith-based organizations, public schools, universities, community groups, and state and local units of government. Programs applying for funding must attend a technical assistance (TA) session, which will be held May 14 and May 30. The grant application deadline is 12:00pm EST, June 8, 2012.
