Serve DC Receives $150,000 Award from Target for Pilot Early Literacy Initiative
On February 3, 2012, Mayor Vincent Gray and Serve DC Executive Director Patricia Evans announced Serve DC was awarded a $150,000 Target Reading Grant. The award will be used to fund DC Reading Corps, a pilot early-literacy initiative aimed at helping children become more successful readers by the end of the third grade. Based on Minnesota Reading Corps, a highly successful program model developed by Serve Minnesota, the DC Reading Corps program will place trained AmeriCorps tutors in preschool and elementary classrooms to support struggling readers. Serve DC Launches "Serve DC Connects," Website Addresses Community Needs
On February 1, Serve DC launched its new community-based website, Serve DC Connects, a user-friendly online resource that links District residents to DC-based organizations, services and programs that provide assistance to veterans, military and military families; children with disabilities; and individuals with HIV/AIDS. Serve DC Connects covers a wide range of needs, including: advocacy, education, employment, food and nutrition resources, health and social services, housing assistance, and legal services. Serve DC Hosts its 8th Annual Life After AmeriCorps Conference, February 24
On Friday, February 24, Serve DC will host its 8th Annual Life After AmeriCorps Conference. Serve DC knows firsthand AmeriCorps members transitioning out of their service term have big decisions to make and this conference is designed specifically to give them the tools and resources to prepare for their future endeavors in service and beyond. Each year, Serve DC brings together AmeriCorps members from programs across the District for this one-day event, which includes engaging workshops, expert speakers and panels, and an exhibition hall, designed specifically to provide meaningful "next steps" resources and opportunities related to employment, advanced studies, professional development and more.
