Washington Monument

Officially established in 1965, the National Mall and Memorial Parks commemorate presidential legacies; honor the courage and sacrifice of veterans; and celebrate the United States' commitment to freedom and equality. The National Parks Service has various volunteer opportunities throughout its system, including

Korean War Memorial volunteers provide visitors insight into an often-forgotten conflict. A wall behind the pool at the east end of the Memorial contains the inscription "Freedom is not Free." Volunteers help visitors understand how all of the elements of the Memorial bear witness to the patriotism, devotion to duty, and courage of Korean War veterans.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial volunteers often play a crucial role in a person's visit to the Memorial. They
help visitors understand the patriotism, devotion to duty, and courage of the men and women honored by
the Memorial. They may assist visitors in locating a loved one's name on the wall or provide explanations
about the layout and symbolism of the Memorial.

World War II Memorial volunteers interact with veterans and their families on a regular basis, helping them understand the symbolism in all elements of the memorial. They also assist visitors with finding names in
the World War II registry database, which is searchable via touch-screen computers at the memorial's
contact station. Programs may be conducted and tours led if the volunteer wishes to do so.
