Are You Ready? September is National Preparedness Month in the District!
Serve DC invites District residents to "get ready" for National Preparedness Month (NPM)! Held each September and sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Ready Campaign, in partnership with Citizen Corps, NPM seeks to transform awareness into action by encouraging all Americans to take the necessary steps to ensure that their homes, workplaces and communities are prepared for disasters and emergencies of all kinds. Serve DC Thanks 2011 DCPS Beautification Day Volunteers!
On Saturday, August 20, 2011 more than 4,000 volunteers joined Serve DC and DC Public Schools at 105 schools for DCPS Beautification Day! This annual event began in 2005 as a citywide "spruce up" of all DC public school buildings in preparation for the first day of school. Serve DC wants to extend a special thank you to its 2011 partners: the Washington Capitals, DC United, Pew Charitable Trusts and the DC National Guard!

Serve DC Hosts National Preparedness Forum on Special Needs & Emergencies
On Thursday, September 1, Serve DC kicked off National Preparedness Month (NPM) in the District with its NPM Forum, "Planning for Access & Functional Needs Populations in Emergencies." This forum convened access and functional needs experts and stakeholders and emergency management professionals to discuss how to ensure the needs of all residents - regardless of access or ability - are understood and accommodated in times of crisis. Panelists included Richard Devylder, Senior Advisor for Accessible Transportation, US Dept. of Transportation; Marcie Roth, Director, Office of Disability Integration & Coordination, FEMA; and Margaret Schaefer, Office for Civil Rights & Civil Liberties, US Dept. of Homeland Security

Join Serve DC & Greater DC Cares on September 11 for a "Tribute to Service"
Join Serve DC & HandsOn Greater DC Cares for a Tribute to Service, a regional commemoration of the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The tribute offers the Greater Washington community an opportunity to rekindle the spirit of unity that emerged following the 9/11 attacks, including onsite hands-on service projects, trainings and a volunteer fair featuring more than 30 local nonprofits.
