District Youth Learn How to Make a 'Plan' |
Commander Ready has had an amazing second year during the 2008 - 2009 school year. With three returning schools, Leckie, Anne Beers, and Tubman Elementary Schools leading the way, three new schools, Draper, Brookland, Wilson, and Birney Elementary Schools were introduced to Serve DC's fun and engaging curriculum!
This youth preparedness program informs young people about the importance of being prepared in the event of an emergency, also guides students through the process of developing a family escape plan for their homes. The plan includes important phone numbers and other vital information that they will make sure that young people know how to reach out for help in the case of an emergency.
Commander Ready teaches young children ways they can be of assistance to adults during emergency situations. Metropolitan Police Officers teach the Commander Ready classes, and have taken a leadership role in developing relationships with the schools, principals, teachers, and most importantly the youth. Upon completion of the Commander Ready program, students are awarded a certificate of completion and a Commander Ready backpack filled with tools they can use to begin their home go kits in case of an emergency.
This school year to date, Commander Ready has prepared more than 300 second graders in 13 schools. For more information on the Commander Ready program, please email Candace Morgan or call (202) 727-8298.
