AmeriCorps*State Formula Funding Available |
|
Serve DC - The Mayor's Office on Volunteerism announces the availability of AmeriCorps*State Formula funding for fiscal year 2009-2010 to eligible organizations. New applicants with high-quality proposals will compete for up to $500,000 in AmeriCorps*State funds made available through Serve DC and the Corporation for National and Community Service (Corporation). The total amount of the grant must not exceed $12,600 per Member Service Year.
AmeriCorps is a national service network that provides full- and less than full-time opportunities for participants, called members, to serve their communities and build the capacity of nonprofit organizations to meet local environmental, educational, public safety, homeland security, or other unmet human needs. Within these five issue areas, programs may submit proposals that address specific problems of local communities.
Serve DC will give special consideration to projects that meet the critical needs of our city and nation, achieve national service goals, and address community problems.

Global Youth Service Day 2009 |
 Serve DC - The Mayor's Office on Volunteerism, invites you to participate in the District of Columbia's Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), April 24-26, 2009. GYSD is the largest service event in the world, engaging millions of young Americans and focusing national attention on the amazing leadership of young people. Serve DC has led the Global Youth Service Day celebration in DC for the past seven years.
Since its inception in the District of Columbia seven years ago, more than 100,000 volunteers have been engaged in nearly 500 service projects! DC's Global Youth Service Day is successful because of a strong coalition of community partners like you who coordinate youth-led service projects.
We encourage you to plan a service project that engages youth as volunteers, addresses an important youth-related issue, or is led by a youth. We have attached a list of project ideas to get you started at www.serve.dc.gov.

Emergency Preparedness Funding Available |
Serve DC - The Mayor's Office on Volunteerism announces the availability of DC Citizen Corps Emergency Preparedness funds for grants up to $75,000.
Awards will be made to organizations in the District of Columbia to incorporate emergency preparedness activities, exercises, and trainings for potential volunteers in various DC communities. This initiative will support a wide range of program activities that emphasize readiness in the event of natural and man-made disasters in the District of Columbia. Additionally, applicants must propose to coordinate with and aid Serve DC in Emergency Support Function #16 - Volunteer and Donation Management, outlined in the District Response Plan. Prior knowledge and/or experience with Emergency Support Function #16 is preferred but not required. However, a willingness to be trained in details surrounding the Support Function is mandatory.
Eligible applicants are organizations currently operating emergency preparedness programs within the District of Columbia. An organization described in Section 501 (c) (4) of the Internal Revenue Code, 26 U.S.C. 501 (c) (4), that engages in lobbying activities is not eligible to apply or act in any type of supervisory role in the program. Individuals are not eligible to apply. Eligible applicants must meet all of the applicable requirements contained in the application guidelines and instructions. The Request for Application (RFA) will be released on March 27, 2009 at 9:00am. The deadline for submission is May 11, 2009 at 5:00pm.
Technical assistance sessions schedule is as follows: April 15, 2009 and April 30, 2009 at 441 4th Street NW, Washington, DC, 11th Floor, South. All interested applicants must register and attend the technical assistance session. Please email Regina Moran at to RSVP for a training session. Serve DC anticipates awarding up to $330,000 in DC Citizen Corps Emergency Preparedness grants, not to exceed $75,000 per grant. The actual number and dollar amount of the awards will depend on the number of approved applications received.

If so, submit your nominations now for the Mayor's Community Service Award (MCSA), an award which recognizes and rewards District residents who have demonstrated a commitment to volunteer service and civic participation. Save the Date: 2009 DC Conference on Service & Leadership |

Each year Serve DC - The Mayor's Office on Volunteerism brings together national service, community and faith-based organizations in a conference focused on enhancing each organizations capacity to meet growing community needs. On May 13-14, the 2009 DC Conference on Service and Leadership will engage hundreds of AmeriCorps program directors and members, Learn and Serve America and Senior Corps program directors and members, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members, youth and representatives from community and faith-based organizations in skill-building workshops and learning tracks.
The vision for the event is to foster sustainable tools to solve serious community issues and address real community needs through service, showcased in this year's theme: "From Nice to Necessary." This year's conference is based on three programmatic themes: Leadership, Collaboration and Sustainability. These themes represent the continuum of growth that leads to healthy and strong communities.
Registration information and conference location will be available shortly. The Life After AmeriCorps conference is free for AmeriCorps Members serving in Washington, DC and will feature speakers, workshop sessions, and a "Next Steps Fair". The registration fee for the General Conference on May 14th is $35.

Serve DC and AmeriCorps NCCC Team Up for Youth Employment |

Serve DC - The Mayor's Office on Volunteerism, in conjunction with AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) has created a once in a lifetime service opportunity for participants in Mayor Adrian M. Fenty's 2009 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). This project is designed to introduce more than 100 young people to the concept of national and community service through meaningful service sites in the District of Columbia.
Participants serving on teams of approximately 10 will be assigned to projects through local organizations that address community needs. SYEP participants will work in a range of activities including environmental clean-up and landscaping, trail and habitat restoration, tree planting and local park/open space beautification, school and playground restoration, general facility painting and improvement, reconstruction of low-income housing and buildings, as well as working with children, seniors, and local food banks.
SYEP participants will also get the opportunity to take part in a variety of member development workshops focusing on the areas of service-learning, life skills, leadership and character development, civic engagement, job preparedness, career planning, and gang education and prevention. The goal of each component of the program is to provide meaningful summer enrichment activities and introduce participants to the value of making positive contributions to their communities.
