Mock Trial Team Advances to Semifinals of County Competition
O'Dowd finished the mock trial competition season with a 3-1 record, falling to American High by only eight points on Feb. 9.
One of the top four teams in the county, O'Dowd will face Piedmont High in the semifinals tomorrow night. American High and Amador High are the other two teams advancing to the semifinal round of the Philip A. Harley Memorial Mock Trial Competition.
This high school criminal trial competition designed to demystify and increase understanding of our judicial system. Student teams study a hypothetical case, conduct legal research and receive individual coaching by teachers and volunteer attorneys in trial preparation, courtroom protocol, courtroom procedure, and analytical and communication skills.

O'Dowd Debate Finishes Third at Stanford

The O'Dowd Debate parliamentary debate powerhouse of Audrey Carson '12 and Nathalie Dierkx '12 took third place in a field of 131 teams at the February 11-13 Stanford University Invitational hosted by the Stanford Debate Society.
Carson and Dierkx completed their five preliminary rounds with a 4-1 record and were the No. 6 seed heading into the 32-team single-elimination rounds. Read more...

"How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" Cast Announced
The title of the Bishop O'Dowd spring musical could have been re-titled "How to Succeed in Getting a Role by Trying Very Hard" after five exhaustingly competitive days of auditions. The 40 students cast in the satirical send-up of the world of big business are now enjoying the fruits of their labor by rehearsing dialogue, dance steps and vocal parts.
Leading roles will be performed by Adam Gildea '12, as the charming go-getter Pierrepont Finch, and Hailey Knott '12, as his love interest (and secretary) Rosemary Pinkleton. Robert Tiemstra '12 will play the head of the company, J.B. Biggley, and Hayley Jackson '12 will play his seductive paramour, Hedy Larue. Read more... A packet was sent home with your student on Feb. 14 containing registration instructions for the 2012-2013 school year. Please note, the online registration must be completed, and the registration fee of $900 postmarked, by March 23, 2012. 2012-13 Tuition Assistance Information
Families hoping to receive tuition assistance for the 2012-2013 school year can find detailed information and applications on our website. Printed applications can be picked up in the Business Office in Dominican Hall.
All families currently receiving tuition assistance must reapply each year with all required documentation. Applications for returning students must be turned in to the Business Office on or before March 2, 2012.

Black History Month Program
In celebration of Black History Month, O'Dowd's Black Student Union (BSU) is presenting "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," based on the poem by Gil Scott Herron. This year's program revolves around revolutions of all types throughout history.
Under the direction of BSU moderator Tony Green, the program will be presented at a schoolwide assembly, and then repeated for parents and the greater community on Saturday, Feb. 25, beginning at 7 p.m., in the theater. Cost is $5 per person, or $20 per family, at the door. Join us and be enlightened and entertained.

An Evening With the Professionals Sponsored by the Career Partnerships Program
Uncertain about what you want for a future career? Think you know, but wonder what it's really like and how to get there? Join us in the O'Dowd cafeteria on Thursday, Feb. 23, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., for "An Evening with the Professionals," sponsored by the Career Partnerships Program. Refreshments will be provided.
You'll have a chance to meet and talk informally with professionals from a variety of fields and backgrounds - medicine, law, science & engineering, sports, business, psychology, media and more.
This is an evening of conversation and networking, not formal presentations. There will be about 30 professionals attending, ready to talk with you one-on-one or in small groups and give you their best advice!

- Ask about opportunities in their fields and how they got started in their careers
- Get advice on college and career

Cal Grant Applications Now Being Accepted
All seniors applying for financial aid must fill out the Cal Grant GPA Verification Form and turn it in to Mrs. Taggart (Nikl) in the counseling office no later than Tuesday, Feb. 28, in order for GPAs to be calculated and entered into the system by the state's deadline of March 2. Hard copies of the form are located outside Mrs. Soller's office. The Cal Grant can be used toward any qualifying California school, including two-year, four-year, public, and private colleges, universities, and career technical schools.
Parents, please check to make sure the student's social security number is correctly listed on the form and that the form is signed and dated in order to avoid processing errors or delays. Once the form is received, Mrs. Taggart will calculate the student's "Cal Grant GPA" and submit this along with the student's SSN via the secure Cal Grant system.
