Annetta Pierro

annetta

Annetta Pierro began her career path at UCLA more than 20 years ago as a secretary to  renowned cardiovascular angiographer, Dr. Antoinette Gomes.

After supporting Dr. Gomes for more than 3 years, Annetta became an administrator for UCLA's division of Neuropathology under the directorship of Dr. Harry Vinters. During her 13 year stint she had the opportunity to work with some phenomenal physicians and says that she learned way more about the anatomy of the brain and its functions than she'll probably ever need to know.

Annetta is "mom" to many and has shared her home as a foster mother with over 15 children within a 10 year span. This year, Annetta enjoyed a proud mom moment as two of her "children" graduated from college. One has been accepted into the LAPD police academy and the other will be a social worker for the Department of Children and Family Services. Over the last several years, Annetta also began volunteering at the California Cricket Association's Annual Golf Tournament which benefits underprivileged children.

Today Annetta is the Program Coordinator/Student Affairs Officer for Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine.  She says that although there have been many challenges along the way, she enjoys working with the residents and fellows as they pursue their career paths in pathology.  Annetta said, "As their coordinator I am often viewed as a mentor, advisor, sounding board and friend. I can truly say that I have found my career niche."

UBAA LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP

The UBAA Legacy Scholarship Campaign Needs Your Help!

We're making our push to raise funds for the 2011-2012 entering freshman class. Help UBAA continue its success in providing every entering African-American freshman with a scholarship ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. We raised over $500,000 last year and provided scholarships to almost 200 students including athletes on partial scholarship.  We expect to give scholarships to a larger number of students this coming fall.

There are two ways to give: (1) Through the UBAA website at www.uclablackalumni.org and/or (2) through the California Community Foundation at

www.calfund.org/give/AfricanAmericanScholarshipFund.php

Help continue the legacy of African-Americans at UCLA.

JULY 2011

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings,

It's summer time Bruins and I hope that you are enjoying yourselves!

This is also the time when we start preparing for the next year of activities for Black Alumni. Fortunately, other organizations also host UCLA-related events throughout the year that would love to have our participation so be sure to check the UBAA calendar.

We will be hosting a wonderful Fundraising Dinner with Honorees(TBA) in February 2012 and we are now requesting volunteers to help with the planning. If you have a couple hours a week to help us make this event a success, please contact us at info@uclablackalumni.org. Volunteers will be asked to do things like organize seating, book entertainment, contact sponsors and mail invites, etc. Also, we are particularly looking for those who have planning experience.

Please respond with Dinner Volunteer in the subject box by July 31st to info@uclablackalumni.org.

On another note, I'd like to praise the fact the state of Michigan has struck down the ban on Affirmative Action! This ban negatively affected diversity and minority enrollment on Michigan's college campuses, as it has in California. It is my sincere hope that we in California can successfully unite to accomplish the same incredible feat. I'll continue to give updates on the push to get Proposition 209 banned in California. This is a fight that we cannot afford to give up on as our legacy at UCLA depends on it.

As always, we will continue to provide access to admitted African American students with our fundraising efforts and planning activities for Alumni that will keep us connected.

Remember, making a one-time donation or donating just $10 per month or more online can help us to succeed in our commitment to our UCLA legacy. Go to www.uclablackalumni.org to donate or to become a UBAA member.
