Craig Holden
Craig Holden is a partner with full service, LA-based firm, Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith LLP and is well-regarded as a litigator and negotiator. For almost 20 years he has served the organized bar and the legal community. Craig graduated from UCLA in 1991, and received his juris doctorate from the University of California, Hastings College of Law in 1994. Craig's practice emphasizes litigation and counseling in varied aspects of business and intellectual property law. His clients range from publicly-traded companies to professional athletes, and his clients laud him for his strategic thinking, and practical advice.
Craig has successfully first-chaired jury trials in federal and state court, as well as bench trials and numerous arbitrations. While he has handled a wide variety of complex commercial litigation matters, his practice emphasizes all types of intellectual property issues. In addition to his litigation practice, Craig counsels companies and entrepreneurs as an outside general counsel on varied aspects of business and intellectual property law, including state and national privacy, data breach and data security laws. He also regularly speaks to legal and trade organizations on these subjects, as well as litigation and trial strategy.
Craig has served on the boards of civic, community and charitable organizations, and is currently Chair of the Council on Access & Fairness, a "think tank" that develops initiatives focused on keeping at-risk youth in school, and promoting opportunities in the legal profession for students from diverse backgrounds. He is one of 50 select members of the RAND Corporation's Southern California 50 Leadership Council, a non-partisan group of leaders focused on civil justice and business regulation issues. He has also been honored for his commitment to pro bono work, and was named "Advocate of the Year" by Public Counsel in 2007 for his success in recovering millions of dollars for elderly and disadvantaged victims of fraud.
Craig is currently a candidate for the California State Bar Board, and if elected he will focus on increasing access to justice for all, addressing court backlogs, promoting the new expedited trials systems, encouraging more pro bono work, and promoting diversity in the legal field.
Craig is a proud Bruin, and continues to stay connected to other alum through the UCLA Black Alumni Association. Craig can be reached at cholden@lbbslaw.com

UBAA LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP
The UBAA Legacy Scholarship Campaign Needs Your Help!
We're making our push to raise funds for the 2011-2012 entering freshman class. Help UBAA continue its success in providing every entering African-American freshman with a scholarship ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. We raised over $500,000 last year and provided scholarships to almost 200 students including athletes on partial scholarship. We expect to give scholarships to a larger number of students this coming fall.
There are two ways to give: (1) Through the UBAA website at www.uclablackalumni.org and/or (2) through the California Community Foundation at
www.calfund.org/give/AfricanAmericanScholarshipFund.php

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello Black Bruins,
April was the month for welcoming distinguished guests to UCLA's campus.
Celebrated Alumna Congresswoman Diane Wastson (Retired) was the guest of honor for the 22nd Annual Thurgood Marshall Lecture on Law and Human Rights sponsored by the Bunche Center for African American Studies. This event honors the legacy of the former U.S. Supreme Court Justice. Each year a notable leader in the African American community is asked to speak. Click on the link to read more about this event:
Rounding out the month was renowned author, speaker and Princeton professor Dr. Cornel West who was joined by Carl Dix, a founding member of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA. The dialogue's theme was "In the Age of Obama...Police Terror, Incarceration, No jobs, Mis-education: What Future for Our Youth?" DeNeve Auditorium was filled to capacity with people from all over the city eager to listen and participate with West and Dix. Though photos weren't allowed during the event, I managed to snap a few photos of the guests for you all to see. Check them out in this newsletter. May 21st is UCLA Alumni Day and we can't wait to see you! This year, a plaque will be dedicated in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King who spoke near Janss Steps decades ago. For more info, go to: http://www.alumniday.ucla.edu/2011/. As always, we are continuing to raise funds for incoming African American students and planning activities for Alumni that will keep us connected. Remember, making a one-time donation or donating just $10 per month or more online can help us to succeed in our commitment to our UCLA legacy. Go to www.uclablackalumni.org to donate or to become a UBAA member.
Be apart of the Black Bruin Movement.
GO BRUINS!
