Ralph J. Bunche
UCLA recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of Ralph J. Bunche (1903-1971) receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. Bunche was the first African American and the first person of color to win the Nobel Peace Prize, an honor he received in 1950 in recognition of his successful mediation of the Armistice Agreements between Arab nations and Israel. It was the first and only time in the long history of the Middle East conflict that peace agreements were signed by all of the nations involved. For almost two decades, as Undersecretary General of the United Nations, Bunche was celebrated worldwide for his contributions to humanity, particularly in the areas of peacekeeping, decolonization, human rights and civil rights. A little known fact is that Bunche was the chief drafter of the sections of the U.N. Charter that deal with trusteeship and decolonization at the San Francisco Conference of 1945. Some popular accounts of the 1965 Selma March also overlook the fact that an ailing Bunche joined arms with Martin Luther King to lead the procession.
Bunche was valedictorian of UCLA's Class of 1927, received his master's degree in Political Science from Harvard in 1928, and for the next six years alternated between teaching at Howard University and working toward the doctorate at Harvard. He completed his dissertation in 1934 and did postdoctoral research in anthropology at Northwestern University, the London School of Economics, and Capetown University in South Africa.
Throughout his career, Bunche maintained strong ties to education and scholarly research. He chaired the Department of Political Science at Howard University from 1928 until 1950, a period in which his analysis of racial politics in American South made major contributions to one of the most significant 20th century books on race, An American Dilemma. He taught at Harvard University from 1950 to 1952; served as a member of the New York City Board of Education (1958-1964), as a member of the Board of Overseers of Harvard University (1960-1964), as a member of the Board of the Institute of International Education, and as a trustee of Oberlin College, Lincoln University, and New Lincoln School.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT | | |
Greetings,
March is Women's History month which gives us the perfect opportunity to recognize some fantastic Lady Black Bruins who've impacted the community and the world. From politics to sports to Hollywood and beyond these ladies have taken their determination to succeed and made us all very proud:
Former Congresswoman Diane Watson Former L.A. County Supervisor Yvonne Braithwaite-Burke Olympic Gold Medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee Olympic Gold Medalist Florence Griffith Joyner aka Flo Jo Filmmaker Julie Dash - "Daughters of the Dust" Filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood - "Love and Basketball" Filmmaker Ava Duvernay - 2011 NAACP Award Nominee "I Will Follow" Writer & Producer Felecia Henderson - Soul Food: The Series Actress & Activist Gabrielle Union Bruins do big things! It's my hope that the list of accomplished Black Bruins continues to grow as we continue to support those who are following in our footsteps at UCLA. Be assured however that a woman doesn't have to be famous or accomplished by society's standards for us to celebrate her. Women make history every day when they care for us, support us and guide us. They deserve to be celebrated as well so be sure to acknowledge those special women in your life this month and every month. Don't forget our fundraiser and Annual Ski Trip is happening at the end of this month and we have our 1st Annual Golf Tournament coming up in May. Check the UBAA calendar for more details. Remember, making a one-time donation or donating just $10 per month online can help us to succeed in our commitment to our UCLA legacy. Go to www.uclablackalumni.org to donate or to become a UBAA member.
Be apart of the Black Bruin Movement.
GO BRUINS!

UBAA 2011 SKI TRIP | | |
On March 25th the tradition continues and a band of UCLA Black Alumni will make the trek back to Mammoth Lakes, California, to enjoy all types of snow-filled activities with family and friends. The annual trip began in the early 90's and has grown to over 200 attendees of all ages including future little Bruins. For two days, Black Bruins ski, snowboard, snowmobile, and enjoy afternoon gatherings with food and a DJ providing music. UBAA also hosts an adult-only party with a rump-shaking, room-bumpin' party on Saturday evening.
UBAA's annual ski trip is a chance to take a quick vacation and join your fellow alumnus and friends for a reasonably-priced get-away. For those that don't ski/snow board, we provide free lessons. There are also spa facilities and nearby outlet stores for shopping. We can't wait to see you March 25-27, 2011!
Go to our site and sign-up for the trip today at http://uclablackalumni.org/ski2011/
