| ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT | |
Al Bradley
Alfred (Al) Bradley has worked in student services at UCLA since 1979, and in the Music Department since 1984. He is a UCLA alumnus, class of 1977. He is currently the academic advisor for the Herb Alpert School of Music (HASOM), Ethnomusicology and Music undergraduates. His responsibilities include supervision of the (HASOM) student services staff; supervision of the information available to the outside world on current admissions policies; assisting ethnomusicology faculty and students with matriculation issues, and many other administrative duties related to student services.
If you are interested in either the music or ethnomusicology major at UCLA, Al most likely will be the first person you ever speak with. Once here, you will surely be advised to "go ask Al."

UBAA FAIR SHARE AWARDED SCE GRANT
Launched in 2007, the UBAA Fair Share campaign works to increase UC eligibility and admission rates for African American students. In partnership with local high schools, UBAA increases access to UC/LA admissions information and resources. With support from alumni, donors and sponsors, UBAA has made consistent progress to increase diversity at UCLA.
UBAA Fair Share Campaign has created a "village" to ensure our children's success, as evidenced by the following:
ˇ From 2009-2010, UBAA helped over 200 students learn about A-G requirements, increase access to financial resources and scholarships, prepare UC admissions applications, and co-sponsored community celebrations for students who were admitted to UCLA for Fall 2010.
ˇ In 2010, over 3,100 African American students applied to UCLA---one of the highest number of applications in the nation, and an increase of over a thousand in the past four years!
Support the UBAA Fair Share Campaign by making a tax-deductible contribution to UBAA Fair Share, PO Box 83422, Los Angeles, CA 90083). Please note "FAIR SHARE CAMPAIGN" on your check. You can also join a committee (advocacy/promotional campaign/fundraising), or become a high school mentor.
Contact us at info@uclablackalumni.org for more details.
Thank you, in advance, for your support and commitment to future Black Bruins.
Southern California Edison recently awarded UBAA with a grant to continue the great work of Fair Share, and UBAA thanks SCE for their support.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Greetings,
As we celebrate Black History Month this year and every year, I am always filled with pride about the contributions of African Americans in this great nation. There are too many people to mention but I can never forget the African American men whose work and legacy have been acknowledged on UCLA's campus.
There are five campus sites named after them: Ralph Bunche Hall(Bunche Center for African American Studies), the Arthur Ashe Student Health & Wellness Center, James LuValle Commons, Jackie Robinson Stadium & the Tom Bradley International Hall Gallery & Conference Center.
**Please note that there simply isn't enough room on our site to mention all of the great Black Alumni of the last 100 years, so don't be upset with us if you don't see your name. ;)
Last month, I mentioned that UBAA and current black students had been profiled in the UCLA Magazine as the 5-year anniversary of the enrollment crisis approaches this year. Please click on the link so that you too can read about our efforts to increase UCLA's African American enrollment & retention as well as what's happening on campus: These are very challenging times for the University of California system economically but some good news is that the UC Regents is moving towards adopting the Holistic Review admissions process for all UC campuses, which helps to give all applicants a more thorough & fair evaluation that's not solely based on scores & grades. UCLA adopted this process in 2007. Check out this Los Angeles Times article written last month that details this anticipated move & its consequences:
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-0120-uc-regents-20110120,0,7342195.story
There is much for us to pay attention to as higher education gets more and more expensive and unaccessible here in the state of California. We need to remain focused and unified in our efforts to maintain our UCLA Legacy and ensure the next generation has access to the same educational opportunities afforded to us. Remember, making a one-time donation or donating just $10 per month online can help us to succeed in our commitment. Go to www.uclablackalumni.org to donate today.
Be apart of the Black Bruin Movement.
GO BRUINS!

UBAA 2011 SKI TRIP | | |
On March 25th the tradition continues and a band of UCLA Black Alumni will make the trek back to Mammoth Lakes, California, to enjoy all types of snow-filled activities with family and friends. The annual trip began in the early 90's and has grown to over 200 attendees of all ages including future little Bruins. For two days, Black Bruins ski, snowboard, snowmobile, and enjoy afternoon gatherings with food and a DJ providing music. UBAA also hosts an adult-only party with a rump-shaking, room-bumpin' party on Saturday evening.
UBAA's annual ski trip is a chance to take a quick vacation and join your fellow alumnus and friends for a reasonably-priced get-away. For those that don't ski/snow board, we provide free lessons. There are also spa facilities and nearby outlet stores for shopping. We can't wait to see you March 25-27, 2011!
Go to our site and sign-up for the trip today at http://uclablackalumni.org/ski2011/

UBAA INTERNATIONAL TRIP
In December 2010, UBAA members traveled to Egypt and Ethiopia for a historic trip. They visited many ancient sites including the Stone Churches in Lalibela, one of Ethiopia's holiest cities, and the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. It was a great experience for all those who participated.

Afrikan Black Coalition(ABC) Conference
The University of California Afrikan Black Coalition is an organization whose function is for black students at all the University of California schools to unite and solve issues concerning academic policy, social atmosphere at the campuses, and matriculation of black students to the University. Afrikan students have formed either an Afrikan/Black Student Union on each of their campuses. Thus the name Afrikan Black Coalition denotes the unity between both Black and Afrikan Student Unions throughout the UC system. This February 2011, the conference will be hosted at UCLA.

The day will be enjoyable and rewarding as we showcase UCLA's importance to California's economic growth.
Each year, UCLA takes part in the annual University of California lunch and a sunset reception at the Sacramento Sheraton Grand Hotel with our legislators and fellow UCLA alumni.
