ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Ryan Cannon Jacksonryan

In the fall of 1994, Ryan Cannon Jackson began his freshman year at UCLA to pursue a career in mechanical engineering because earlier that summer he'd accepted a 4 year paid internship at Solar Turbines in his home town San Diego.  By the spring of 1995, Ryan became a member of Phi Beta Sigma at UCLA. They helped him feel welcome, taught him the value of business ownership and enlightened him with a global perspective of humanity. After studying under the late great Dr. Beverly Robinson he quickly found himself fascinated with the history of people of color in America and around the world. By 1999, Ryan received his BA degree from UCLA in Afro-American Studies with a concentration in Film & TV.

Ryan started working as an independent contractor in 2000 for Walt Disney Imagineering on Disney Land's and Disney's California Adventure's various multimedia productions.  From 2001-2007 he was hired by the ABC Cable Networks Group as a staff writer/producer to work for Toon Disney, Playhouse Disney and the Disney Channel. He soon became an award winning writer producer for on-air promotions, commercials and video games.

Ryan's entrepreneurship began in 2003.  He had adopted a vegan lifestyle and discovered the significance of live enzymes & non-dairy probiotics.  While still working full-time he also rented a commercial kitchen in Venice Beach. Each weekend he bought hundreds of coconuts from downtown Los Angeles, brought them to his kitchen where he and friends chopped open and drained the water out of as many as they could.  They then blended the young coconut water with medicinal herbs, organic fruits, agave nectar and proceeded with bottling each tonic by hand. After sampling his tonics with several local natural food stores each agreed to carry them. In 2007, Ryan got his big break when Whole Foods Market approved his Wellness Tonics beverage brand for their Southern Pacific Region and a year later the Wellness Tonics expanded to their Northern Pacific Region. Ryan expands his business daily and today is an evolving maverick, a man destined to play a significant role in any industry he is involved with.

Congrats to Ryan! Go Bruins!!

JANUARY 2011

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Happy New Year,

I love new beginnings and the new year gives us all an opportunity to start something new. All the experts say that resolutions don't really work so we won't make them. Instead we'll make the commitment to do the things we know need to be done this year and beyond.

At UBAA, we are committed to engaging Black Alumni, supporting UCLA students through our Legacy Scholarship campaign, continuing outreach to young people in the Los Angeles community who need to prepare for college as well as sustaining our long and rich legacy of Black Bruins.

We have exciting fundraisers coming up in 2011 like our Annual Ski Trip to Mammoth that's sure to bring out those who've been waiting to hit the slopes and those who want to show us their perfected swing at the summer Golf Tournament. We're also looking forward to addressing local community and campus needs for African Americans with a forum at UCLA this spring.

I'm encouraged by the positive feedback that we have received so far and we'll continue as long as we have your support. We can't do any of this without your participation and the next generation is depending on us to show them the way. Be sure to check out the article written in the January 2011 issue of the UCLA Magazine which highlights current African American students, enrollment and UBAA's role in meeting the challenges they may face at UCLA. This article will be online later this month at http://www.magazine.ucla.edu/.

Remember, donating just $10 per month online can help us to succeed in our commitment. Go to www.uclablackalumni.org to donate today. Let's start 2011 off with a bang!

Be apart of the Black Bruin Movement.

GO BRUINS!

LaMonica Peters
UBAA President

WHO'S WHO AT UCLA

Vusisizwe Mkanyasi Azania

It has been 30 years since Vusi was first admitted to UCLA as an incoming freshman through the Academic Advancement Program's Freshman Summer Program in 1980. Since that time he and the campus have undergone some pretty significant changes.  If you were a student at UCLA in the 1980's, not only did the campus look very different, most people knew Vusi as Greg Nelson.  While he served in several appointed positions within Afrikan Student Union and NOMMO during his first few years on campus, it was Vusi's involvement with the African Education Project (AEP) in the UCLA Community Programs Office (CPO) and a song by Bob Marley-Pimpers Paradise, that he credits with motivating him to change his name. He explains that given the consciousness he was developing, he felt compelled to tell his parents that he just didn't feel like a Gregory Darnell Nelson anymore.  Although it was a challenge at first, especially for his dad, it is a life choice he says that his mom, dad and siblings have come to appreciate.

Of his many accomplishments as a student leader at UCLA, Vusi is proudest of convincing then Chancellor Charles Young during their 1-on-1 meeting at a Lake Arrowhead UCLA Affirmative Action Conference in December 1987, to express support for student-initiated programs in his closing remarks.  A little known fact: Vusi coined the term "student-initiated, student-run" as part of ASU's strategy to gain University support for the innovative retention programs like ASU's Academic Supports Program which Eric White('85) and Mandla Kayise ('87) pioneered.

Vusi Azania

Prior to returning to UCLA, Vusi spent 15 years in education, working for several government and non-profit agencies. Most recently, he served as Assistant Director of Educating Young Minds, Inc., a Los Angeles-based non-profit learning center that helps K-12 students excel at school and in life.  But when the chance came to rejoin CPO, he jumped at it.  He explains that he wanted to regain a certain swag he and other students leaders of organizations like ASU, MECHA, Samahang Pilipino, etc., developed as they campaigned for student empowerment and Affirmative Action.

Today, Vusi serves as a community service advisor in CPO since his return to campus in the summer of 2006. As a CPO advisor, he works with student leaders, campus and community partners to facilitate student-initiated community service efforts that are designed to address economic and social disadvantages within greater Los Angeles and beyond.  Part of his work also includes advising students regarding liability and risk management issues related to their activities as signatories and volunteers of registered campus organizations.

His future plans include completing his undergraduate studies at UCLA and earning an advanced degree in education, public policy or urban planning.  He also hasn't ruled out studying law, an ambition he had before pursuing a career in education.  Between now and his planned 2026 retirement date, Vusi intends to help develop more community service-learning opportunities as well as to continue encouraging students to participate in campus governance and civic engagement.  After retiring, he plans to travel more as well as to write and talk about the 80's decade.

Vusi has two children-a son who graduated from Hampton University and is in his 2nd year at Thomas Cooley Law School in Michigan; and a daughter who will be entering kindergarten this year.

FEBRUARY 2011

February 11th-13th

Afrikan Black Coalition(ABC) Conference

The University of California Afrikan Black Coalition is an organization whose function is for black students at all the University of California schools to unite and solve issues concerning academic policy, social atmosphere at the campuses, and matriculation of black students to the University. Afrikan students have formed either an Afrikan/Black Student Union on each of their campuses. Thus the name Afrikan Black Coalition denotes the unity between both Black and Afrikan Student Unions throughout the UC system. This February 2011, the conference will be hosted at UCLA.

UC Day in Sacramento, State Capitol 8am-5pm

Please join the UCLA Alumni Association and UCLA Government & Community Relations as we travel to Sacramento for one day to advocate on behalf of UCLA. As a valued UCLA alumnus, your participation is especially crucial this year as we grapple with the current California budget crisis and introduce ourselves to our new legislators and the new Brown Administration. The day will be enjoyable and rewarding as we showcase UCLA's importance to California's economic growth.

Each year, UCLA takes part in the annual University of California lunch and a sunset reception at the Sacramento Sheraton Grand Hotel with our legislators and fellow UCLA alumni. We will make sure you are well-prepared for this important day. The day includes a thorough training breakfast, meetings with legislators, and a hosted lunch.
