A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
| | |
Greetings Black Bruins,
The holiday season is upon us and I know that you're all preparing to spend time with your loved ones and shopping so I'll be brief. :)
As 2010 comes to a close, I think we should all reflect on what we've accomplished this year and consider what we can do differently, if not better, in the coming year. There is so much going on in the world today and it's quite easy to forget about the things that should truly matter to us: family, friends, quality of life, & community. I know situations can be tough during these uncertain times but it's times like this that make us stronger and bring us together.
Now more than ever, we would like you to get involved with what we do here at the UCLA Black Alumni Association. We know that time can be limited but just a few hours a week or month can make a huge difference in the organization's growth and success with its initiatives.
Donating just $10 per month online can help us to provide financial assistance to students(which increases the yield rate), run college outreach programs in local schools, support the Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA, advocate for African American interests on campus, and most importantly, keep Alumni engaged. Go to www.uclablackalumni.org to donate today.
If you're at all like myself and you want to see things change for the better, then join us in our efforts and become the change you want to see. We are Bringing Back Black Bruins in 2011!
Be apart of the Black Bruin Movement.
Happy Holidays BRUINS!
LaMonica Peters UBAA President

WHO'S WHO AT UCLA | | |
DEBORAH E. BOLTON
A veteran UCLA employee for over 30 years and a UCLA graduate, Deborah is what we call a true-blue Bruin! She transferred from Santa Monica College(SMC) and graduated in 1978 with a degree in history from UCLA. She worked briefly at SMC as a Recruiter for the Educational Opportunity Program(EOP) until she was hired at UCLA in June of 1979 in Undergraduate Admissions & Relations with Schools, an early outreach program.
Deborah worked in Undergraduate Admissions for 8 years. She explains that in those days, she had the power to admit almost anyone who met the criteria because the number of applicants was low compared to today's figures and the admissions requirements were much different.
Now she is in the Registrar's Office as a Residence Deputy, where she has continued to serve the University since 1987. In her current position, she reviews out-of-state applications to determine whether or not resident or non-resident fees will apply. Her work also includes reviewing applications from around the world and those in the military, etc.
Deborah says that she intends to work as long as UCLA will have her as she enjoys working on campus. She'd like to work until she at least reaches her 40th anniversary of service. After UCLA, she intends to work part-time in a less demanding position or field but wants to stay busy. She is even considering caring for older foster children to occupy her time after retirement.
Deborah has 2 sons who are Marines and both are now attending El Camino College.
UBAA thanks Deborah Bolton for 31 years of service at UCLA! Go Bruins!
Deborah Bolton can be contacted at dbolton@registrar.ucla.edu. |
