Author, motivational speaker, talk-show host, entrepreneur, philanthropist and mother of two-Wendy R. Gladney is living proof that attitude is everything. After surviving abuse as a child, divorce and cancer as an adult, Wendy has come out victorious and graciously shares her experiences to inspire others. She has written two books, "Healing Without Hate: How to Forgive to Live," and "The Preacher's Daughter: A Memory" providing uplifting strategies to overcome obstacles and find personal fulfillment. Forgiveness is a central theme in all of her work, and the success of her books has sent Wendy on many speaking engagements covering topics such as overcoming adversity, divorce, single parenting, and building a business/balancing a life. A proud Bruin, Wendy received her BA in Political Science from UCLA in 1983, and was one of the founding members of the Black Undergraduates Business Economic League) with Oscar Turner. As an undergrad, Wendy also served as an intern for Former Congressman Julian C. Dixon. Later, Wendy was involved in acting appearing on several television shows, but her non-profit work would become her top priority. A professional consultant and event manager for more than seventeen years, Wendy started with a concept for a single business that has matured into a conglomerate of companies known as Wendy's Enterprises. Wendy's companies include: Personal Services Plus, Inc., an event management company known for its unique approach, attention to detail, and personal service; Forgiving For Living, Inc., a nonprofit organization that offers solutions related to issues that require forgiveness; and the PLUS Awards, focusing on those that truly go above and beyond in the community helping others to be their best. No stranger to the Media world, Wendy is a guest writer for many publications. She's the Event Essentials Editor for Suite Events Media Group and is a regular columnist for the Los Angeles Sentinel, and Black Business News, the official publication of the Black Business Association. Contributing to her diverse background, Wendy has also worked in the entertainment industry as an actress and local talk show host. Her local cable talk show, "Building Bridges with Wendy Gladney," is in syndication and every Friday morning, Wendy can be heard as a guest speaker on KJLH 102.3 FM's Front Page with Dominique DiPrima. Very active in the community, Wendy gives back through her nonprofit foundation, Forgiving for Living, Inc. Annually, the foundation hosts the PLUS Awards, honoring individuals committed to their communities in the areas of healing and forgiveness. Wendy says that helping women and girls find their purpose in life is her passion. For her own achievements and commitment to community, she has been the recipient of several honors, including the nationally recognized Curvations tribute presented by spokesperson, Queen Latifah in 2007. Wendy is a lifetime member of UBAA currently residing in Southern California, and is the proud mother of Courtney and Freddy who she calls her "crown and glory." UBAA Legacy Scholarship Campaign
The fundraising campaign for the entering Black students for the 2010-2011 school year was a great success. Thanks to our Black Bruin alum and friends, the UBAA Legacy Scholarship Campaign raised just over $450,000 and supplied 175 entering Black freshmen with scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. Plans are currently underway for our campaign efforts for the 2011-2012 freshman class. We hope to get even more Black alumni involved in this effort.
One exciting note is the new and improved UBAA website. The website is now set up to receive monthly recurring contributions. Our goal is to get a lot of Black Alumni to give a little every month. Just think, a monthly contribution of $20 to $50 per month equates to an annual contribution between $240 to $600. Can you help support this scholarship campaign with a monthly contribution? Can you reach out to some of your classmates to do the same?

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
| |
Greetings Black Bruins,
Another summer has come and gone but that simply means it's time to get back to school and back to football! Continuing with our quest to reconnect with fellow Alum, we'll be joining the Bay Area Bruins in Berkeley, CA for the Cal vs. UCLA game on Saturday, October 9, 2010. Please see the calendar section for more details.
UBAA would like to personally invite you to attend this year's Black Convocation, a celebration and uniting of all people of African descent at UCLA on October 7th. You don't want to miss this opportunity to meet current students, faculty, staff and alumni as they began another year and another step towards success. Save the date!
Attending the Black Convocation will be a great opportunity to meet Miss Jasmine Hill. Recently elected to represent the Student Body of UCLA, Jasmine is a Senior majoring in Communication Studies and hails from Oakland, CA. Two of her primary goals as President will be to focus on affordability options for students as well as improving campus climate through community service. She believes that community service is the perfect opportunity for students of all backgrounds to give back but more importantly, a chance to truly observe the conditions, carrying that experience with them so that they can have a better understanding of those they serve. We are very proud of Jasmine and will support her during her term.
Thanks to the efforts of our past UBAA President, Jennifer White & the Fair Share team, I am excited to continue the Fair Share mentoring program that informs and guides youth in Los Angeles regarding their college education. Incoming UCLA students who have received scholarship funds from UBAA will pay it forward by participating in Fair Share events, encouraging those behind them and being a shining example of what can be accomplished when properly informed. We have more great things in store to enhance this program and we'll keep you informed as they develop.
Our world is changing drastically at an incredible speed. It is imperative that we prepare our children for the very competitive, college and career landscape that lies ahead of them. We all should know how advantageous it is to be a degree holder in the work place so I'm calling on each and everyone of you to support the next generation by volunteering your time and donating funds in whatever amount you can afford. We have revamped our website so that you can conviently make monthly donations to our causes at UBAA. Not only do we appreciate the committment, the children in the community that we serve deserve to be supported and will excel because of you. We thank you in advance!
Stay tuned for the Bring Back Black Bruins campaign, our Fall mixers hosted by UBAA Educators & Lawyers, and our UCLA vs USC tailgate. We will also be sending a survey to get your opinion on how we can better serve you, the Alumni. Until next time....Go Bruins!
Be apart of the Black Bruin movement. ********************************************** UBAA Has Appointed a New Membership Chair It's my pleasure to welcome Gina Fountaine to the UBAA team for the 2010-2012 term: We still have positions and committees to fill so contact us at info@uclablackalumi.org if you'd like to serve. We'll continue to introduce new officers as they come. Until next time...Go Bruins! LaMonica Peters UBAA President 2010-2012

| UBAA PROFESSIONAL GROUPS | |
We are excited to announce that UBAA will be establishing professional groups within the organization to allow members to connect with others in their industry. Our goal is to provide networking opportunities as well offer professional information that can help further careers, etc.
We are open to suggestions for groups and looking for Professional Group Chairs who will be responsible for hosting 2 mixers annually and providing professional information to members. As of now, we will start the following professional groups:
