Toicha Vincent, MD     Toicha Vincent      
 
Dr. Toicha Vincent hails from the Oakland, California and entered UCLA as a freshman in 1988. Leaving UCLA with a B.S. in Physiological Science in 1993, it was always Toicha's goal to become a doctor. "I knew it would take a lot of discipline and hard work to become a doctor but serving my community as a physician would be worth it all."
 
Dr. Vincent received her graduate degree from Georgia State University, Atlanta in Exercise Science in 1996 and attended medical school at Michigan State University, East Lansing completing her studies in 2003. In 2002, she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) National Medical Honor Society making her the 1st African American woman to receive this honor at Michigan State University College of Medicine. 
 
She would complete her residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX where she now resides and has worked as a primary care physician at the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, West since 2006. In addition to her work at the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, she works on-call at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital and has teaching affiliations with the University of Texas, Houston as well as the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. She has been a medical standards committee member for the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic since 2008 and her responsibilities include reviewing, researching and implementing the medical standards, policy and procedures for the entire organization. Kelsey-Seybold consists of approximately 18 Houston area clinics with over 320 practicing physicians.
 
"It's my hope to see African Americans in particular do all that we can to improve our quality of life by doing the little things we can do to stay healthy and protect ourselves, despite the health coverage issues many face today."

                      UCLA ALUMNI DAY
This year's theme was "I O UCLA" in which Alumni were encouraged to reflect on how their lives have been influenced by their experience as Bruins.
 
The Alumni Association announced presales for "The UCLA Century" book which chronicles Ucla's rich history and includes highlights such as when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke at Janss Steps in 1965 as a part of the ASUCLA Speakers Program.

Bruins young and old attended Ucla's Annual Alumni Day festivities. There were tours, seminars, an information fair, games, food, complimentary photos with Joe Bruin, Alumni Day tote bags, families and fun! 
 
The campus is as beautiful as always and we invite you to visit on Alumni Day (Parking is free!) next year or for one of the exciting events we have in store for you!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Greetings,

It's that time of year again...UBAA ELECTIONS! We need the support of ALL our alumni and friends to continue building UCLA Black Alumni Association to achieve its full potential. WE NEED YOU!

Here are THREE WAYS you can help UBAA help Black Bruins:

1) Become a member and be counted! - Only paid members can vote in UBAA elections
2) Consider running for an office! - Connect with your Alma mater and lend your skills to an organization doing GREAT work on campus and in the community to continue the legacy of Black Bruins at UCLA.
3) Vote! - Watch your email for your election details, and be sure to return your ballot to be counted.

UBAA must have new volunteers to continue working to increase UC eligibility through the Fair Share Campaign, raising money for scholarships, and supporting the annual Afrikan Graduation.

Elected Officers / Directors & Chairs / Appointed Position Descriptions
 
Elected Officer positions require about 5-7 hours per week - increasing to 8+ during weeks of events or major activities.

President
The President serves as the chief executive officer of UBAA, presides at all meetings of the membership and executive officers, and governs the overall administration of the UBAA. The President is the chief spokesperson for the UBAA and the chief liaison to the UCLA administration, the UCLA Alumni Association, other UCLA alumni clubs and groups, the African Student Union, the UCLA Black Faculty and Staff Association, local elected officials and the various community organizations and institutions with which UBAA is engaged. S/he is responsible for shaping and maintaining the perception of the UBAA to the membership, the UCLA campus community and the broader community. The President supervises the executive officers and all areas of UBAA activity. The President directly supervises the Campus and Community Relations area including the following committees:

Vice President - Operations
Responsible for the overall infrastructure - operational and administrative, of the organization. Establishes and enforces policies and procedures for the organization. Also responsible for overseeing the marketing and communications of the overall and all aspects of the core business of the organization, membership and member relations. The VP of Operations oversees the administration and design of the database and website. The secretary/general counsel and treasurer report to the VP of Operations

Vice President - Social & Community Programs
Overall coordinator of all UBAA social events and community activities. Liaison and main contact person for UBAA with campus events organizations, event promoters, and companies. Creates annual UBAA event and committee budget. Solicits funds for the programs and events.  The VP of Social  & Community Programs also is responsible for soliciting and involving members in volunteer and service activities of UBAA on campus and in the community. This Vice President directly supervises the following committees:

Vice President - Fundraising
Responsible for enhancing the overall fiscal status of the Association. Solicits contributions and oversees the coordination of all fundraising activities. Forges relationships with Members as Donors as well as external donors and Corporations to maintain support for all of our fundraising activities all year long. Establishes fundraising goals based on operational needs as well as scholarship needs and any other contributions the UBAA intends to distribute annually. Oversees the Scholarship Committee and event coordination of fundraising events.

Treasurer
The reports to the Vice President of Operations as an Officer in the Association. They are responsible for all accounting for UBAA, this includes creation and maintenance of annual operating budget, accounts payable and accounts receivable.  The Treasurer issues receipts and disbursements for all Programs and Events and keeps inventory of material sold through the online store and membership packets given out. Processes invoices and billing for all Events and Programs while monitoring all banking and performing reconciliations of bank statements on a monthly basis. The treasurer generates Financial Statements as needed and prepares finances for annual tax returns. The Treasurer as assists Officers and Program Coordinators with Annual Budget Projections and Planning, as well as short term project Budget planning. The Treasurer also picks up mail from local postal box disseminates at meetings, answers and refers UBAA phone messages as needed to the proper people. Finally the Treasurer serves as a liaison with the UCLA foundation Representative in regards to scholarship fund accounts with the University.
 
Secretary/General Counsel
Responsible for proper mailing of notices to members, maintains proper legal recording of proceedings of meetings of the Association, Executive officers and all committees. Ensures that accurate membership records are maintained. Advises on all legal matters.

Directors & Chairs / Appointed Position Descriptions
 
Director/Chair positions for each of these committees require about 2-4 hours per week - increasing to 5+ during weeks of events or major activities. 
 
Black Campus Community Relations Chair
The Black Campus Community Relations Chair works with African-American student, staff and faculty organizations to maintain a sense of community and support. Activities include serving on committees for the African Student Union (ASU) Harambee Council, ASP (Retention) and SHAPE (Outreach and Access) Advisory Boards, Bunche Center Community Advisory Board, organizing tables for: BuncheCenter's Thurgood Marshall Dinner, Black Faculty/Staff Assoc.'s Annual MLK Luncheon, etc.
 
University Relations Chair
The University Relations Chair engages the UCLA Alumni Association and campus administrators and advocating on behalf of African-American Alumni and the local African-American community and in support of African-American students, staff and faculty. Activities include serving on committees for the UCLA Alumni Association, attending and collaborating on events with UCLA's Government and Community Relations Division and UCLA in LA and holding meetings with University officials re: admissions, retention, student life, alumni relations, staff/ faculty relations, community relations, etc.
 
African-American Community Relations Chair
The African-American Community Relations Chair supports education and advocating on behalf of African-American youth and students. Their committee Partners with local elected officials, community organizations and businesses. Activities include collaborating and supporting community organizations and their efforts, particularly those related to education and youth, engaging local elected officials on behalf of Black alumni and the University and hosting community events with/ for key African-American figures at UCLA (past examples include Coach Karl Dorrell, the African Student Union, booksignings for UCLA faculty, etc.)
 
Social Events Chair
The Social Events Chair is responsible for coordinating networking events such as an annual Networking Night/Job Fair,  Professional Mixers (Monthly), Clubs/Parties (Quarterly), Weekend Excursions (Semi annually), and Book signings/Music listening parties (Semi annually).
 
Sporting Events Chair
The Sporting Events Chair is responsible for coordinating UCLA Sporting events and tailgates for the Men's football and basketball teams. They may also coordinate events such as local LA professional teams.                                   
 
Outdoors & Adventures Chair
The Outdoors & Adventures Chair coordinates the annual Ski Trip, outdoor excursions such as biking, hiking, etc and the creation of such things as a UBAA Golf Club- quarterly events or other type group.
 
Volunteers Chair
The  Volunteers Chair is responsible for recruiting and coordinating volunteers from Community Events such as UCLA Campus events and local events like AIDS walk or Breast Cancer walk. This chair is also responsible for recruiting mentors for UCLA Students.
 
Corporate Sponsorship Chair
The Corporate Sponsorship Chair reports to the VP of Fundraising and is dedicated to raising funds to sustain the UBAA Scholarship Fund as well as for the establishment, cultivation, and extension, of all events, and activities.  The Corporate Sponsorship Committee will develop relationships with potential sponsors that will be equally beneficial. We pledge not to sacrifice the integrity of the UBAA and its members for potential funds donated to the organization.
 
Scholarship Chair
The Scholarship Chair oversees the entire scholarship process. They are responsible for creating the application, managing a team of volunteers to read, score and interview applications and applicants. They are also responsible for the creation of policies and procedures of new scholarship funds. 
 
Endowment Fund Chair
The Endowment Fund Chair heads up a committee which establishes the infrastructure, policies and procedures for an endowment fund. This committee with work with high end donors to contribute to the endowment fund. They will also work with the scholarship committee administer endowed scholarships.
 
Membership Chair
The Membership Chair/Co-Chair position is an appointed position, not an elected position. The chair/co-chair report to the VP of Operations. -Manage the membership committee. Recruit new members as needed. (The committee should meet regularly. It's up to the chair(s) to determine frequency). Coordinate and hold 1 general membership meeting per quarter. Work with VP of Social and Community Programs on events for the Membership and that UBAA members get a discount where applicable. Provide membership recruitment support (or supply committee members to do so) at the majority of the UBAA events. Seek out additional member benefits for our members to add as an incentive for joining (ie discounts at gyms, stores, events & services and/or job/resume postings). Process membership applications. Send out and Process membership renewal notices.
 
Director of Marketing
The Director of Marketing is an appointed position, not an elected position. They report to the VP of Operations but support all of the officers of UBAA where needed and appropriate. Create and publish quarterly newsletter. Update and maintain general UBAA brochure. Create general UBAA marketing campaigns (Electronic, Print, etc). Create/Assist with/Support press releases when needed. Maintain integrity of UBAA corporate identity. Design and order business cards for officers when necessary. Enhance event flyers for officers and assist  Director of Technology with Aesthetic design of website as well as  Maintain content on notable alumni for website and newsletter
 
Director of Technology
The Director of Technology is an appointed position, not an elected position. They report to the VP of Operations but support all of the officers of UBAA where needed and appropriate. Update and maintain UBAA website in conjunction with the third party hosting/development vendor. Maintain store manager and potentially run credit card sales/reports. Create new email addresses and assist users in setting up pop3 email thru email clients such as outlook, outlook express 
Monitor overall space and usage. Monitor email space as often users keep their email on the server Maintain UBAA membership database and provide technical support for membership and events. Run queries and reports for officers as well as send out occasional e-blasts.
