 COMFORTABLE WITH UNCERTAINTY
Not-Knowing is Part of the Journey

During the month of AUGUST Reverend Glenda and Reverend Judy will help us explore the questions: "How do we relate to discomfort?" and "How do we respond in the midst of difficulties with our emotions and unpredictable encounters in ordinary life?"

Pema Chodron says: "...we can never know what will happen to us next. ...we can never avoid uncertainty."

With that in mind, Reverend Glenda and Reverend Judy will help us explore spiritual practices that can open us to the possibility of learning to stay with a broken heart, with a nameless fear, with unmet expectations.

They will help us learn to relax in the middle of chaos and learn to be cool when the ground beneath us suddenly disappears. They will help us learn to bring ourselves back to the uncertainty of the present moment ~ over and over again ~ as a reminder to experience each moment completely new and fresh.

We will be invited to start right where we are ~ no matter what that may look like ~ so that we can cultivate the capacity to use everything in our lives as a basis for waking up to the idea that our world is already sacred.

This talk series has the potential to be transformational for anyone who is sincere in facing everything and avoiding nothing.

We invite you to join us at Common Ground every Sunday for our 10:30 am inspirational service.

  •  VISIONING FOR COMMON GROUND
     Opening to Divine Guidance

Common Ground is a spiritual community expressing a state of consciousness in which all of us are growing in awareness, unfolding, and opening to new ideas in a changing world.

From the first thought of Common Ground as a possibility, Reverend Glenda and Reverend Judy have been deeply aware that they are not to tell God what do or to ask God for things, but to be absolutely available for the activity of God already in motion.

They are very clear that their work is to open themselves up to become aware of what is already happening; to be able to hear, feel, see, and catch God's plan for spiritual community.

For the past eight years, as a team along with the Board of Directors and the Advisory Team, they have moved Common Ground forward through spiritual insight and inner vision following a path to the successful expression of Common Ground in the world.

In May 2013, Common Ground's current lease agreement at Newport Avenue will come up for renewal. Now is the time for the community to come together to open to the vision for the future.

Group visioning will help Reverend Glenda, Reverend Judy, the Board of Directors, and the Advisory Team begin to get a picture of how the community can develop, grow and unfold, and of changes that may need to be made.

A passage in Proverbs says, "Where there is no vision, the people perish."

As Spiritual Community we will open ourselves up to God's vision for us, become inspired by the ideas held in the mind of God, and open to the possibility of living and expressing those ideas through Common Ground
    .

We will come together to align in consciousness with our divine purpose as spiritual community, and to open ourselves to catch a sense of how that expression is supposed to occur through Common Ground and each one of us.

During the visioning process we will ask these questions:
  • "How does God see Itself as Common Ground?"
  • "What is my part; what is it that I need to embody or become in order for this vision for Common Ground to manifest?"

We will then be invited to wait, to inwardly hear, see, and catch what comes to us, to get a glimpse of what it looks like, what it feels and sounds like.

We will pay close attention to any symbols or metaphors that appear, without judgment. We will open ourselves to whatever comes up and notice what begins to flow through so we can communicate it, write it down, express it, dialogue about it.

In this way we can begin to articulate God's vision for Common Ground.

Reverend Glenda and Reverend Judy encourage everyone who has an interest in Common Ground to open to these questions and spend time in prayer and silence in advance of the August 12th gathering.

The Visioning Process is open to the entire community.

  •  FOCUS ON THE ENVIRONMENT
     Ecological Responsibility

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama speaking on Environmental Awareness: A Part of Daily Life

"I recognize the urgency of preserving the balance of the environment, and believe that if we neglect it, the world as a whole will suffer.

Because of the material wealth and resulting environmental problems seen in the West, some people say we need to discard the modern way of life. But I feel this is a bit extreme. We must use wisdom and understanding to tackle this ecological problem. I am very happy there are so many experts from different fields to inform the discussions of these issues.

I feel that it is extremely important that each individual realize their responsibility for preserving the environment, to make it a part of daily life, create the same attitude in their families, and spread it to the community.

Because we in the Third World face so much poverty, we sometimes see 'the environmental issues as far away from us. But we must learn from the problems that are faced by the highly advanced nations to set the proper path from the beginning."

  •  PRAYER & MEDITATION
"Go placidly amid the noise and haste" ~ Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful.

    Strive to be happy.

    Desiderata - Max Ehrmann - 1927
