CHOP WOOD & CARRY WATER
"Real Life" Is the Sacred Life
During the month of JUNE Reverend
Glenda and Reverend Judy look forward to sharing insights from the new paperback edition of Philip Goldberg's book, ROADSIGNS ON THE SPIRITUAL PATH: Living at the Heart of Paradox.
They will invite us to embrace opportunities to turn the raw material of everyday life into spiritual gold.
They will help us explore the importance of living life deeply and yet living it lightly.
One of the key questions they will invite us to consider is this: "How do we turn the stuff of life into sacred currency?" The answer reveals itself in the emerging spiritual curriculum of our lives.
Finding our way calls us to take the road less traveled ~ the higher road ~ based on the Truth of our own ultimate compass.
They will share 'Travel Tips' and deep awareness that will help us make life into a joyful journey as we learn to take the scenic route toward finding the Divine within ordinary existence.
We invite you to join us at Common Ground every Sunday for our 10:30 am inspirational service.

TIME OUT
Rest, Relaxation, Renewal
During the later part of June, Reverend Glenda and Reverend Judy will take a short vacation to give them a much needed time of rest and renewal.
They will be traveling to Lancashire, England, where they will stay in Father Leo Booth's comfortable home. The attractive setting of Father Leo's home and garden will provide a perfect resting place for them.
While in England they plan to open to guidance in preparation for what comes next for Common Ground. They intend for the respite to bring clarity, vision and fresh insight at both a personal level and as leaders of spiritual community.
The one Sunday that the reverends are not at Common Ground, Father Leo Booth, Associate Minister, will be speaking. Stacie Buda, ministerial intern, will be on the platform supporting Father Leo. As usual, the entire spiritual community is invited to come together to support one another in awareness of the idea that 'everyone is a minister' in their own way.
Upon their return, Reverend Glenda and Reverend Judy look forward to sharing their experience and their insights with the community. A time of community visioning will take place in mid-July.
Common Ground's house musician, Robert Fields, has scheduled a vacation during the time Reverend Glenda and Reverend Judy are in England.
Robert has faithfully supported every Sunday service since Common Ground was founded in 2004. While his presence, music and enthusiasm will be missed, Robert's time off is long over due and well deserved.
In preparation for Robert's vacation, Common Ground has invited Brian Sherick, a multi-talented musician, composer and performer, to attend Sunday services during June to get acquainted with Common Ground's order of service.
Brian is experienced and has provided music for a number of churches in the local area, most recently, Huntington Beach Church of Religious Science where he was the music director for 6 years.
In Robert's absence, Brian will be joined by Darius Lux, guest vocalist.
Many Common Grounders and friends of the community will be vacationing during the summer months. Prayers for safe travel are filling the Universe.

FOCUS ON THE ENVIRONMENT
Flip Flotsam
Ever wondered what happens to your footwear after you're finished with it? You can see an example of what happens to one type of footwear, the flip-flop, by watching a delightful 26-minute YouTube video, Flip Flotsam.
This award-winning and startlingly original documentary traces the fantastic journey of Africa's most popular footwear, the pata-pata, or flip-flops as we would call them.
The film is a short Kenyan documentary made in association with the Kenyan Wildlife Service.
It follows the working life of the flip-flop from production in a Mombasa factory to disposal and eventual rebirth as useful recycled items.Tens of thousands of flip-flops end up in the sea before landing on Kiwaiyu island's beaches on the Lamu archipelago.
Easily bought, quickly discarded, for Westerners the flip-flop stands as a symbol of the summer holiday. But in its African homeland, it has a unique life cycle and the story reveals much about Africa's economy and culture.
Gathered from across the shores of the Kiwaiyu Island, the local women carve the flip-flops into dolphins, turtles and mobiles, fueling a new cottage industry which provides precious income for many families. Their children craft model boats from the rubber soles, making their own toys from the ocean's debris.
This is a meandering, cheery film celebrating the resourcefulness and creativity of Kenya's beach-combing islanders.
Take time out this summer to view this beautifully photographed, charming documentary.

HEALING ENERGY
Usui Reiki
Reiki is Japanese for universal life force. Rei means universal, all-encompassing or the Holy Spirit. Ki means life force energy, the energy that runs through everything at all times, and is the same as Chi in Chinese.
Reiki is a natural system of hands on healing. It is not a religion with doctrines or creeds. Rather, it is an alternative therapy that can be used in conjunction with western medicine.
Rev. Barbara Fukuda, DD, RH, INHA, will present a two-day Reiki I and Reiki II Certification Course in the Usui Reiki system of Healing. The course will take place at Common Ground on Saturday, June 9, 2012, from 2 pm to 6 pm and on Sunday, June 10, 2012, from 1 pm to 5 pm. Fee for the course is $125.00. Pre-registration is required and payment plans are available.
A manual, notebook and handouts are provided. Assignments and tests are given to the students but are completed at an individual pace outside of the classroom. Upon completion of all coursework, students will receive a Reiki I and a Reiki II Practitioner Certificate. There is no right or wrong timing when it comes to Reiki ~ it is all Divine Timing!
Reiki Course - Level I
Curriculum includes the following: Class Manual; Legal Issues for Reiki Practitioners; What is Reiki?; A Brief History of Reiki; Reiki Principles; Determining Your Dominant Hand and Hand Positions; Chakras; Letting Go; Intentions; Self Healing; Picking Up Negative Energy; Learning about Attunement; Receiving Reiki Level I Attunement; and Hands-On Practice Sessions.
