 PRECIOUS HUMAN BIRTH
 Claiming Sacredness

During the month of MAY Reverend Glenda and Reverend Judy invite us to embrace the idea that of all the infinite variety of situations into which we could have been born, we find ourselves now in this experience of being human.

They will help us realize that we are blessed with the extraordinary freedoms and capacities of a precious human birth; that all the favorable conditions that make it possible for us to realize our own divine nature have come together in this lifetime.

Sunday inspirational messages will help us learn to appreciate the precious qualities of our human experience so that we can consciously choose to make good use of it ~ for our own benefit and for the benefit of others as well.

This topic is perfect for a month in which we celebrate Mother's Day ~ the energy of birth ~ as well as Memorial Day ~ in remembrance of those whose precious human lives have ended in the name of war.

We will be invited to embrace the idea that every life is precious, no matter what.

We invite you to join us at Common Ground every Sunday for our 10:30 am inspirational service.

  •  OUTREACH
     A Priceless Opportunity for Hugs

Under the team leadership of Nancy Berg, Common Ground is once again pleased to support the efforts of Get on the Bus.

Free of cost to those being served by the program, Get On The Bus brings children and their guardians/caregivers from throughout the state of California to visit their mothers and fathers in prison.

Get On The Bus provides travel bags for the children, comfort care bags for the caregivers, a photo of each child with his or her parent, and meals for the day (breakfast, snacks on the bus, lunch at the prison, and dinner on the way home).

On the bus trip home, following a four-hour visit, each child receives a teddy bear with a letter from their parent and post-event counseling.

Details for Common Ground's participation will be released soon. Thank you for taking part in this meaningful outreach effort.

     FOCUS ON THE ENVIRONMENT
     PREcycle

How about a shift from recycling to precycling?

This simple plan helps avoid waste up front rather than having to figure out how to manage waste after the fact. It reduces waste before it even gets to your home.

Precycling is a smart idea that represents the stage before recycling and, unlike recycling, it expends little energy.

Precycling happens at the point of purchase, and entails choosing products that come in the least amount of packaging, purchasing fewer disposable items and buying in bulk.

Reusable shopping bags are already in use by a large number of shoppers as are reusable water bottles, coffee cups and take-home containers.

With the summer season just around the corner, now is the time to think ahead. Set an intention to plan outings and projects that include the idea of precycling.

Why not make life a little more simple and at the same time avoid creating mountains of waste?

Precycling is a good idea whose time has come!

  •  PRAYER & MEDITATION
     Contemplate This

Being born a human being is a precious opportunity.

The following Buddhist teaching story illustrates the great gift of human birth
    .

Suppose that this great earth were totally covered with water, and a person were to toss a yoke with a single hole into the vast ocean.

Now consider that a wind from the east would push the yoke west, a wind from the west would push it east, a wind from the north would push it south, and a wind from the south would push it north.

Now imagine a blind sea-turtle swimming in the wide sea. Consider that the sea-turtle comes to the surface only once every one hundred years.

What do you think? Would that blind sea-turtle, coming to the surface only once every one hundred years, stick his neck into the yoke with a single hole?

Probably not, but, it is more likely for the sea-turtle to accidentally poke its head through that ring than to be born a human being.

It would be a sheer coincidence. It is likewise a sheer coincidence that one obtains the gift of precious human birth.

"Since you have a precious human birth, you should not waste it. If you waste this time, then you are wasting something very great. Even were you to waste a billion dollars, it doesn't matter. You can make it up. You can do something, and you can make it up. But if you waste this precious human birth, it is very, very difficult. You cannot make it up."
(from a teaching by Khenchen Tsewang Gyatso Rinpoche)

     TITHING 2012
As We Give, So Shall We Receive ~ Common Ground is truly blessed and in turn becomes a blessing in the world

Common Ground reaches out to the global community through our spiritual practice of conscious giving.

Giving back to the world is an important aspect of our mission and vision. A balanced integral approach is reflected in conscious selection of 501c3 qualified programs and institutions to which Common Ground provides tithes each month.

Recipients of Common Ground 2012 tithes include: IONS (Institute of Noetic Sciences), advancing the science of consciousness and human experience to serve individual and collective transformation; Kiva, empowering people to lift themselves out of poverty; Disability Rights California, affirmatively addressing the needs of the traditionally underserved and underrepresented disability community; Project HOPE School, (Homeless Outreach Program in Education), helping children without permanent homes transition into the mainstream educational system; Walking Shield, helping to improve the quality of life for American Indian families; Direct Relief International, supporting the immediate medical needs of earthquake victims in Haiti; Direct Relief International, supporting the immediate medical needs of earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan; and, Get on the Bus, serving as a conduit to assist children in crossing barriers that separate them from parents in prison.

The organizations to which Common Ground tithes are meaningful programs where people from the spiritual community and its friends are already serving with heart and hand, and supporting with time and treasure.
