CSI Annual Fund Phonathon Connects with Alumni Support

Last fall's College of Staten Island Phonathon raised over $20,000 for the College's Annual Fund.

Last fall's phonathon, on behalf of the College's Annual Fund in an effort to raise much-needed dollars to assist our students with scholarships and research stipends, to support new library acquisitions, and much more, was a success. Student, staff, and alumni callers* took to the phones, over ten evenings, to reach out to alumni for their support this academic year, and our alumni heeded the call, pledging over $20,000.

Callers worked diligently to reach as many alumni as possible, especially those celebrating graduation anniversary years: the classes of 1999, 1989, and 1984. These classes rose to the occasion with generous pledges, often sharing how their education at CSI has been invaluable in their careers and subsequent successes. In turn, our student callers shared their current CSI experiences with interested alumni, keeping them connected to what is happening on campus now.

Hillel's Alternative Break in LA: Working with City Year to Make the World Better for Children in Poverty

Hillel members from CSI and other campuses volunteered their time in Los Angeles over winter break. This past winter break, student members of Hillel at the College of Staten Island and other service-minded students from six universities around the country were part of the solution for underprivileged children in the greater Los Angeles area. Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life teamed up with City Year to provide services for the Boys and Girls Club in Santa Monica, sprucing up the facility, painting beautiful and cheerful wall murals, building plant benches, and volunteering in the after-school program. These CSI Hillel students joined 50 other students from campuses around the country for a week of meaningful community service and in-depth exploration of poverty and need across the U.S.

Days were spent doing volunteer work, which included, but was not limited to, building, painting, tutoring children, and serving meals. The participants were prepared for intense days of service and were open to experiential learning as a means to increase knowledge about socioeconomic and social justice issues.

CSI Hillel Returns to Gulf Coast

Members of Hillel at CSI helped victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita for the second year in a row.

The College of Staten Island Hillel joined, for the second year, the growing community of over 3,100 Hillel students who have helped rebuild Mississippi and Louisiana since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the area in 2005. This one-week trip, from January 3 to 10, focused on hands-on service, community interaction, and the exploration of social justice and Judaism.

CSI Student Brian Lemberg commented that going to New Orleans with Hillel and Jewish Funds for Justice was a real "eye opener." It was a very humbling experience to see first-hand how people are still struggling down there," he said.
