President Morales Honored at Awards Banquet

Dr. Morales was honored for his significant contribution to the advancement of education in NYS. 

The National Puerto Rican Day parade, which drew nearly two million spectators crowding both sides of Fifth Avenue in Manhattan last weekend, focused on celebrating Puerto Rican heritage. Marchers included stars of stage, screen, and music, most of whom were greeted by deafening cheers of adoration.

College of Staten Island (CSI) President Tomás D. Morales, PhD, was one of the honorees recognized for his significant contribution to the advancement of education in New York State, and acknowledged for his commitment to upholding the highest standards of academic excellence and for producing a legacy of meaningful achievement in students.

CSI Student Gains Acceptance to Prestigious Combined Degree Program

CSI AthleticsCSI student Jason Ford has recently received some great news. He has been accepted into the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Medical Science Training Program, a National Institutes of Health-funded MD/PhD program, where he will seek his PhD in Biochemistry and Cell Biology.

"I owe much of my success to the excellent education, support, and mentoring opportunities offered to students at the College of Staten Island," says Jason, who just graduated from the College summa cum laude in 2008 with a BS in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Biochemistry, and is currently enrolled in the CUNY MS in Neuroscience program, studying under Dr. Probal Banerjee. "After reviewing the medical and graduate school curricula, which are done simultaneously, I can see that I have been extraordinarily well-prepared for these arduous yet immensely rewarding endeavors in academia and clinical medicine. I will always remember the great things that CSI has done for me, and will always advocate CUNY education as I progress through my career."  Read More>
Macaulay Honors College Welcomes Class of 2013

CSI's Macaulay Honors College incoming class had an opportunity to get to know their new campus better this week, as they participated in an orientation session that showed them the lay of the land.

Commenting on his impressions of the campus, Nicholas Gonzalez said, "I think the campus is beautiful and bigger than I expected, and, so far, I really like it." Christina Vicidomini stated that she was very pleased with the orientation and that she was "impressed with everything [that the event organizers] have done, everybody they've introduced us to, and getting us acquainted with a very big campus." Meagan Derbyshire, who is a Biomedical Engineering major who has been to campus before, noted, "I definitely like being welcomed by each of the departments and finding out a little bit more about them, where they are, and how they can help us out."  Read More> 

College Community Participates in Gay Pride Parade 

CSI students, faculty, and staff participated in the Fifth Annual LGBT Pride Parade in St. George.It was a beautiful day for a parade last Saturday, as approximately 55 memb
ers of the College of Staten Island community joined about 250 other marchers in the Fifth Annual Staten Island LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender] Pride Parade.

Jeremiah Jurkiewicz, President of the CSI Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) and parade participant, said that he thought that the parade "was a great success because everyone who participated had a great time and we portrayed that this community is there. Especially for CSI, there were many straight people who were involved, not only the gay community,so it brought more people in."

2009 Friends of CSI Award Given to Nancy Myers Benbow and Christopher Benbow

Nancy Myers Benbow and Christopher Benbow were awarded the 2009 Friends of CSI Award for their lifelong commitment to the College of Staten Island and the Staten Island community last week at a special ceremony held in the conference room of CSI President Dr. Tomás Morales.

"There are many well-known pairs such as Batman and Robin, Lois Lane and Clark Kent, and Bill and Hillary," Friends of CSI Executive Committee member Laura Kennedy commented upon the presentation of the award, and "on Staten Island, another well-known pair is Christopher and Nancy."

The Benbows received this annual award from the Friends for the extraordinary volunteer time they have given, not only to the Friends of CSI, but to many worthy organizations here on Staten Island. Read More>
