CSI Professor coproduces HBO documentary, publishes online photo essay
On May 12, 2008, a catastrophic earthquake of magnitude 8 on the Richter scale hit Sichuan Province in rural China, killing nearly 70,000 people, including 10,000 children. Immediately after the earthquake, Ming Xia, professor of political science at the College of Staten Island went to his hometown as part of a film crew for the HBO Documentary, China's Unnatural Disaster: The Tears of Sichuan Province.
Working as producer, interviewer, translator, and travel guide, Xia worked in collaboration with award-winning producers and directors Jon Alpert, Matthew O'Neill, and Peter Kwong, a professor at Hunter College. They worked [as a crew] to capture the important events as they unfolded, as well as many moving moments in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Students Dig-In and Plant 750 Trees
 Student volunteers from the College of Staten Island and other City University of New York schools braved light rain and muggy conditions to gather on the north end of the CSI campus to plant 750 small trees as part of the CUNY-wide Dig-In tree-planting initiative.
These trees and 800 larger trees, which are being installed by professional landscapers, are being planted on the CSI campus under the auspices of MillionTreesNYC, an effort launched by NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New York Restoration Project (NYRP) founder, Bette Midler. The City of New York Parks & Recreation Department has partnered with the NYRP to plant trees throughout the five boroughs, with a goal of one million trees by 2017. Read More> |
Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Friends of CSI Donate $10,000 to Aid CSI Scholarships for 2009-2010
In an effort to assist eligible students with scholarships though turbulent economic times, the boards of the Alumni Association and the Friends of CSI have donated $5,000, respectively, for a total of $10,000, toward general scholarship needs for the next academic year.
Dr. Christine Cea, President of the Friends of CSI, emphasized, "The mission of the Friends of the College of Staten Island has always been to promote the welfare of the College and to raise funds for scholarships and other pressing needs. Our mission becomes even more significant in this difficult economic climate, when there are fewer scholarship dollars to go around. College Employees Bring Their Kids to Work 
Faculty and staff members at the College of Staten Island and their children enjoyed another fun-packed Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, last week.
After a welcome reception that included light refreshments and the chance for the kids to receive CSI ID cards, the children gathered in the Student Art Gallery to hear Prof. Donna Scimeca, Prof. Charles Liu, and Student Art Curator Meg Rowan discuss their roles at the College. Questions for Liu, an astronomer, quickly turned to whether Pluto is still considered a planet. Read More> | |
Showcasing Dedication to Safety at the Campus Peace Officers Award Ceremony Dedication to the College community was clearly evident on the faces of nearly 100 proud people attending the College of Staten Island's Campus Peace Officer Award and Recognition Ceremony held last week.
Hosted by Milton Santiago, Vice President for Finance and Administration, with Paul Murtha, Director of Public Safety, serving as the Master of Ceremonies, guest speakers included Michael Daniels, Acting Vice President of Student Affairs at CSI, as well as William Barry, Director of Public Safety at The City University of New York (CUNY) and Michael Lederhandler, Assistant Director of Public Safety at CUNY.
