Around the Conference

Just Imagine....

Imagine... a hurricane has blown through your town; power is out, debris is everywhere. Water is rising and you are climbing up to your attic with the thought that you might have to punch a hole through the roof to be saved.

Imagine... you own a small rowboat and a motor. You cruise down what was your street, which is now a raging river. You pick up neighbors and pets, and try to avoid hot power lines, for hours and hours and hours...

Imagine... you filling sandbags, you serving meals, you are keeping watch over sleeping, stranded people. You are there passing out blankets, clean-up kits and teddy bears to small homeless children.

You don't have to imagine it. You do it everyday.

With your gifts to OCWM you make a difference. Did you know that within hours of the tornado in Joplin our denomination had trained chaplains on the ground helping piece together lives?

Did you know that many personal donations and a gift of $50,000 from the Disaster Relief Fund of the UCC (supported by OCWM funding) and matching funds from the Disciples of Christ made "The Station" in Joplin the premier site for those rebuilding the city?

Did you know we've just finished seven years of rebuilding in New Orleans and still have crews working in Florida while many other agencies have left the state?

Do you know that the "round the clock" witness of the "Master of Disaster" Rev. Stephen Redman has his training from the National Office all paid for by your OCWM?

Some say, OCWM stands for Our Church Wants Money.

All I can say is to me it means Our Church Works Miracles!

Your Disaster Relief Coordinator,

Rev. Dr. Stephen J. Redman

Reflection on Hospitality & the Individual Believer

Dr. Marc A. Wessels, Associate Conference Minister

I remember when gasoline stations were service stations - a place to stop and have your car filled up with gasoline while service station attendant actually looked at your vehicle, checked the oil level and the pressure of your tires and cleaned your windshield before the final bell chimed signaling that your tank was full. The memory is particularly fresh as I recall working as such a service station attendant at the local Hess station in Hartsville, South Carolina just a few blocks from Coker College where I was a student. The owner/manager of the station took pride in his staff providing the best service in town - we were speedy, polite, efficient and hospitable. I remember quite clearly hearing on many a day, "Fill 'er up."

On a trip to the little town of
De Soto, Missouri I was amused to discover an old Texaco gasoline service station which has been lovingly restored. It reminded me of my days of service at Hess. It also brought to mind the old Texaco slogan, "You can trust your car to the man who wears the star-- The big, bright, Texaco star!" They even had the deadpan comedian Jack Bennie as their spokesman for their company.

Playing off their advertising campaign, they had a jingle which played on the radio wherein their service men, sang, "We are the men from Texaco - We wear the Texaco Star - We like to think at Texaco We've got everything for your car - We've got wipers for your windshield' plugs n' belts n 'tires, too lubricants and batteries and polishes for you - All the things to keep your engine up to par - We've got everything for your car. That's why you can trust you car to the man who wears the Star for the kind of products that can take care of you car - At every Texaco Station, clean across the Nation, you can trust your car to the man who wears the star the big bright Texaco star!"

That old station got me to thinking about the heavy use - perhaps overused - advertising campaign of the United Church of Christ in recent years - with our emphasis on extravagant welcome.

We may not promise everything for the public's car from wipers to plugs, we do plug a lot of hospitality.

But what is hospitality in the church and are we truly living out the words which we mouth?

Hospitality can be a drink of water; a welcoming word; a thoughtful act offered in support of someone. These are direct demonstrations of hospitality - one of the key core values which we proclaim as leaders and members of the United Church of Christ. We talk in terms of an "extravagant welcome" but what does that really mean once we get beyond the hype and rote messaging that many UCCers can say in their sleep? You know the refrain, "No matter who you are, or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here." I would hazard to guess that most...

The thing Tim Schultz loves most about the Faith,In Project is that it's a two-fold initiative. "We have faith in our church and in the UCC, but we also love living in Northeast Ohio," said the membership and media coordinator of Avon Lake UCC. "It's a positive message that we can show our religious faith and also that the city can rebound, that we're doing good things here."

This is precisely the message the United Church of Christ, with national headquarters in downtown Cleveland, was hoping to convey when it launched the Faith,In Project in June. Currently 121 communities from across the United States have joined the movement, including many in Northeast Ohio. In a huge show of support of the program's initial overall success, the UCC national offices unveiled a 20' by 50' banner, which went up on the side of the building on Prospect Avenue August 30.

"The United Church of Christ made the wise decision 20 years ago to relocate its headquarters here to Cleveland, and we are excited to embrace all aspects of this great city," said the Rev. J. Ben Guess, executive minister of the UCC's Local Church Ministry, during the banner unveiling. "When we give back to the cities in which were are connected, we make them more lovable.

That is the heart and soul behind our Faith, In Cleveland campaign."

Live your faith. Love your community. The Faith,In Project invites Christians from across the globe to loudly proclaim their faith and to live out that faith in their neighborhoods through mission and outreach. Join, or learn more about the Faith,In Project. Get a "Faith,In" project guide, with ideas your community can put into practice. http://faithinproject.com/

Marcus Engel, Motivational Speaker

Sponsored by SHYG of First Congregational UCC of Webster Groves

10 W Lockwood, Webster Groves, MO 63119

Saturday, October 20, 2012 3-5 pm

Memorial Hall

Youth and Adults are invited to join us for an inspirational talk with Marcus Engel followed by small group breakout sessions.

Questions can be directed to youthcoordinator@firstchurchwg.org
All are invited.  Donations of school supplies are encouraged in lieu of admission tickets.

Marcus grew up in the St. Louis area and as a part of the Mid Missouri South Conference of the UCC.

On a cold autumn night during his freshman year of college, Marcus' life took a dramatic turn. Following a Saturday night hockey game, Marcus and some friends were headed to a local diner for a midnight snack. They never made it.

When he awoke to a world he would never again see, Marcus faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles: survive hundreds of hours of reconstructive facial surgery, adapt to blindness and find happiness in a world changed forever.

Marcus' story has empowered, enlightened and entertained audiences around the nation to overcome personal adversity and make intelligent decisions.

Arts & Faith St. Louis presents...
The second annual September 11th Interfaith Memorial in Music
An Appreciation of Religious Diversity

Arts & Faith St. Louis, a working partnership between St. Louis arts, religious, and university leaders is excited to announce the second annual September 11th Interfaith Memorial in Music: An appreciation of Religious Diversity. The group aims to promote a "more harmonious St. Louis" by establishing an ongoing relationship between the arts and faith  communities.

The concert takes place on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at 5:30 pm in the perfect acoustics of the historic Sheldon Concert Hall (3648 Washington Blvd), and features renowned Grammy-winning soprano Christine Brewer, jazz pianist Peter Martin, American Soul artist Brian Owens, and the Dickson String Quartet, in addition to musical  representatives from Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, and Muslim faith groups. Plans for the evening also include the installation of a temporary interactive sculpture on Washington in front of the Sheldon, created by St. Louis artist Lyndsey Scott. The event is free and open to the public.

Primary sponsoring partners for the Interfaith Memorial in Music include Interfaith Partnership, the Jewish Community Relations Council's Michael and Barbara Newmark Institute for Human Relations, Opera Theatre Saint Louis, and the Sheldon Arts Foundation. The Whitaker Foundation is the lead underwriter, with additional significant support from the Goldstein Family Foundation.

The Pipes and Drums Corps and an honor guard from the City of St. Louis Fire and St. Louis County Police Departments will present the colors. Dr. Gerald Early, distinguished professor at Washington University and Director of the Center for Humanities will provide opening reflections.

Following the show, audience members will have the opportunity to affix ribbons to the interactive sculpture as a physical sign of commitment to understanding, respecting, and working for peace in the face of religious diversity.

Let's Move! Faith and Communities Sign-On

Two years ago the United Church of Christ joined the national movement to help end childhood obesity and to increase awareness among adults about the chronic diseases associated with weight gain (i.e. diabetes, heart disease, high blood cancer and cancer).

The United Church of Christ, along with other mainline denominations continues to work with the Campaign for Health Kids project (CHK) and Faith United to End Childhood Obesity to help First Lady Michelle Obama to expand grassroots participation in the Let's Move Faith initiative to end childhood obesity.

The Let's Move initiative wants to identify and organize over 1,000 faith leaders from a number of diverse faith congregations nationwide to be partners in the Let's Move Faith and Communities movement.

You can help by encouraging your UCC conferences, associations, local churches, clergy, pastors and lay leaders to sign on to the  Let's Move! Faith and Communities website at http://www.letsmove.gov/join-lets-move-faith-communities.

When you sign on be sure to list "United Church of Christ" as the denomination.  Also, please put "Faith United to End Childhood Obesity" in the comments section.  Will you please take 5 minutes and sign on now? Signing makes you an official partner in a growing movement that believes that any differences that exist among us pale in comparison to our common commitment and mission to protect and promote the health of children.

Please take a moment to check out the Let's Move! Toolkit http://www.hhs.gov/partnerships/resources/Pubs/lets_move_toolkit.pdf
In it you'll find creative ways to address the childhood obesity issue in your congregation and community, including how to establish health councils and implement the five pillars of Let's Move!

Mark Your Calendars - September 30, 2012

The Mission & Social Concerns Committee invites you to:

Deepening the Conversation: A Moderated Panel on Bullying, September 30 at 3pm, in the sanctuary of St. Peters UCC, 20 East Fifth Street, Washington (refreshments to follow)

The American Association of Suicidality lists suicide as one of the top three causes of death among 15-24 year olds in our country. For every completed suicide by youth, it is estimated that 100-200 attempts are made (2003 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey).

Bullying is a prime cause of youth despair and is epidemic in our country. 33% of youth report being bullied 1-3 times per week, and bullying among adults in the workplace, political arena, and in families and friendships is becoming a troubling American cultural norm.

Join our panel in learning about the implications of bullying in youth and adults and reflecting together on spiritual and social responses we may engage as members of the United Church of Christ.
