Mars on the Mind

Dr. Marc A. Wessels, Associate Conference Minister

"The love of knowledge is a kind of madness."
- C.S. Lewis, Out of the Silent Planet

Some may think it is mad to go to Mars, but the love of knowledge has led us, again back to the Red Planet with a new rover named Curiosity. Yes, Virginia, there is life on Mars, it is robotic and it came from America. Our nation's latest chapter in the exploration of the Red Planet occurred this past Sunday when NASA's Curiosity landed safely on the Martian surface after a voyage of eight-months, traveling over 352 million miles. The rover landed with precision in the northwestern part of the Aeolis quadrangle in the Gale Crater, while is a little less than 100 miles in diameter and believed to have been created by impact about 3.5 billion years ago. The Gale Crater was discovered in 1892 by Australian amateur astronomer, Walter Frederick Gale, from Sydney, New South Wales. Gale, who built his own telescope, observed Mars incorrectly and described what he perceived to be the presence of canals.

While this ancient impact scar has no watery canals it does have an unusual feature known as the Aeolis Mons, a mountain in the center of Gale Crater which rises 18,000 feet high. NASA selected the Gale Crater as the landing site for the Curiosity rover mission with plans for vigorous examination. Since landing, photos have been transmitted back to Earth showing a mountain which is spectacular - taller than any mountain in the lower 48 states in America. Curiosity's early images have validated the significance of this landing site and there is great hope that the rover's future mission objectives will provide NASA scientists helpful data that will determine the habitability of the Red Planet. Curiosity will provide knowledge which will define our understanding of Mars' geological history and climate, determining possible future manned landings and the establishment of a human settlement. The nuclear-powered rover will investigate the Martian surface, digging and analyzing the soil searching for the base molecular building blocks of life.

Curiosity led us into space back in 1957 with the launch of an artificial satellite called Sputnik. Yuri Gagarin was the first human in space when he orbited the Earth in April 1961. Fifty years later we are continuing the first steps as spacefarers. Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, the Soviet Russian rocket theorist was a pioneer of cosmonautics. Born in the 19th Century, he observed that, "Earth is the cradle of humanity, but one cannot live in a cradle forever." In his own words, his epitaph, proclaims that, "Man will not always stay on Earth; the pursuit of light and space will lead him to penetrate the bounds of the atmosphere, timidly at first, but in the end to conquer the whole of solar space."

God created humans as co-creators in nature. He made us with the purpose of glorifying and enjoying him forever. In our hearts, in our very spirits, we have the wonder of being curious creatures. We are called by our very cosmic make-up to seek new horizons. As the American psychologist and social philosopher, B.F. Skinner postulated, "A baby naturally explores everything it can get at..." And so we continue to explore all that we "can get at". We are continuing through our intellect, our technology and spirit to explore the marvels of space. This week we have Mars on our minds.

The psalmists remind us that behind these marvelous wondrous works such as a majestic mountain on Mars there is the Creator of the universe, the God we worship. Psalm 19 notes, "The heavens declare the glory of God" and Psalm 8 declares, "Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens... When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what are mere mortals that you are mindful of them,   human beings that you care for them?"

The heavens remind us of the majesty of our Cosmic Creator. Thank God that he cares for us by granting us the love of knowledge, intellect and skill necessary to reach out and touch "the moon and the stars" formed by the work of His hand. Thank God for the work of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory and all those involved in the exploration of space for the benefit of all on our Pale Blue Dot.

As we marvel at the wonder of Mars, we can declare with the modern psalmist, Chris Tomlin,

God of wonders, beyond our galaxy

You are holy, holy

The universe declares Your majesty

You are holy, holy

Lord of heaven and earth

Lord of heaven and earth

Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth

Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth

Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth

("God of Wonders")

Global Ministries Child Sponsorship brings many SMILES!

There is one aspect of Global Ministries that never fails to put a SMILE on our own faces in Global Ministries and on many faces around the world - the Child Sponsorship Program! Disciple and UCC individuals, families, and church groups connect each month with more than 1,000 very special children, providing them with critical elements such as meals, shelter, education, love, and accompaniment through the excellent ministry of 14 child sponsorship sites around the world.

In fact, all of us in Global Ministries harbor a special affection for the Child Sponsorship Program. The home-based staffs in Cleveland and in Indianapolis have done group sponsorships of children over the years. The Indianapolis staff recently got news of their third sponsored child, at the Family Village Farm in India: a little boy named Roghan who turned five on June 20.  His mother abandoned the family; his father, who works odd jobs as a painter, could not care for Roghan; neither could Roghan's grandmother care for him. We in Global Ministries are happy to support Roghan with our gifts, our concern, our prayers, and our love.

The Child Sponsorship program has been providing assistance for more than 40 years-one child at a time. If you, your Sunday School Class, youth group or Mission Committee wish to sponsor a child, please download an application.

Or, you are welcome to give a gift for Child Sponsorship general program in order to allow Global Ministries to continue allocating 100% of monthly sponsorships continue to the individual children.

For more information on the Global Ministries Child Sponsorship Program or contact Linda Lawrence at Global Ministries at or toll-free (866) 822-8224, extension 3222.

Welcome Senior Pastor John Roberts

St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Oakville invites the community to join the congregation in welcoming Senior Pastor John Roberts, who will preach his inaugural sermon at the 9 and 10:30am services Sunday, August 19.

Roberts, his wife and two boys moved from the area of New Braunfels, Texas, to Oakville to assume the leadership of St. Paul's, 5508 Telegraph Road.

Roberts, a Presidential Scholar, received his master's degree in divinity at Southern Methodist University after graduating from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas,
where he majored in psychology and minored in religious philosophy.

Sixteen years in the ministry has prepared Roberts to lead the 167-year-old St. Paul's congregation into the future, according to a news release.

Roberts sees the role of the church as the vehicle to proclaim: God's love, which invites us into relationship with him and to love others; God's grace and mercy, which restores us and calls us to restore others; and God's love, which calls us out of our comfort zones to make heaven on earth, to make up there come down here, building God's kingdom here on earth, the release stated.

College Ministry for Students in Columbia

In just a few weeks, students at the University of Missouri and other Columbia colleges will be starting the fall semester.  Some of those students come from UCC churches.  How will they maintain and develop their faith away from home?

Columbia UCC began in 1923 as a student-initiated ministry to those of German Evangelical background.  To honor this heritage, and in gratitude for Synod/Conference support in our early years, the church started the UCC Student Fellowship, University of Missouri, in February 2011.  We invite all UCC college students to participate.

Please be assured:  while the University of Missouri has the largest number of participants, this group is also open to students from Columbia College, Stephens College, and Moberly Area Community College (Columbia campus).

We'll begin weekly gatherings again right after students get settled in.  We provide a free, non-fast-food meal each week and opportunity for UCC and UCC-friendly students to gather, get acquainted, talk, and pray.

We hope you will inform your college students about the UCC Student Fellowship, invite them to participate, and encourage them to check out our Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/pages/UCC-Student-Fellowship-University-of-Missouri/192286317451212?ref=hl.

Please feel free to contact Rev. Steven E. Swope or Christian Education & Family Ministry Coordinator Brad Boyd-Kennedy with questions and student contact information.

Students (and their visiting parents) are also always welcome at Columbia UCC's worship services - Saturday evenings at 5:00 and Sunday mornings at 10:30 (9:30 until Labor Day).

Columbia UCC is grateful for the opportunity to be partners with you in ministering to your college students.  Please keep this exciting ministry in your prayers!
