Community News

BCC's Biz Night at BCM!

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce's March Business After Hours event was a hubbub of friendly mingling, eating and drinking, and even some shop talk. Most of all, it was a chance to catch up with old friends, make new business contacts, and see familiar faces. And, of course, being hosted by the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, everyone in the Concert Hall enjoyed some great musical performances. Borough President Marty Markowitz dropped by to remind us that, as a community working together, we can make Brooklyn a vital business center. And all reveled in the wonderful Erica's most excellent rugelach and chocolate treats. On the whole, not bad for a quiet Thursday evening in the heart of Brooklyn. (Pictured: Karen Geer, Marty Markowitz, and Rick Russo; Michele Temple on guitar and Marni Rice on accordion.)

Pete's Program Pick

Music Adventures
This innovative program encourages creative expression through music, dance and related arts. Children play instruments and use props in an engaging and progressive setting while they explore musical traditions from around the world. Along with music theory, chanting, and singing, your young musician up to 5 years old will start a life-long love of music.

-Pete Robbins, Dean of Programs

Teacher Tip

Leave your instrument out of the case in a room that you spend a lot of time in. Then any time you have a free moment, play! Some of the best breakthroughs happen in short practice sessions.

-Roger Lent, Piano Faculty

Music Therapy Corner

Playing is instinctive in childhood. We develop and mature through play, so why do we put the merits of play aside as we become filled with adult worries and responsibilities? Playing with others connects us to our innate ability to grow, to explore, and to thrive. Music Therapy for Wellness is a monthly series for adults at any skill level to play music and gain relief from stressors. Learn to play music in a non-traditional way. Ready, set, play!

-Toby Williams, MA, MT-BC, LCAT, Director of Music Therapy Division

Watch A Broadway Musical's Recording Session!

Once: A New Musical is the new Broadway show based on the Academy Award®-winning film and features the Oscar®-winning hit "Falling Slowly." Here is a special look into this unique cast recording session where the 13 cast members act, sing, and play all of the instruments: there is no orchestra or separate band. The distinctive aspect to the cast album is that it was produced allowing these actors/musicians to record the music in the same style and environment as their stage show. This unusual recording process captures the live essence of the ensemble. Watch how the music supervisor, Martin Lowe, and the producer, Steve Epstein, made this unique session work.

Music Partner Highlights

PS 34

In the heart of Greenpoint lies one of NYC's oldest public school buildings. A visitor could easily get lost trying to find his/her way through the labyrinthine layout of classrooms. Not that that ever happens to me. Last week I visited our afterschool programs supported by funds from Councilmember Steven Levin's office. Ten 5th graders were learning to read  music and play the B and E strings on guitar. Twenty 3rd graders were dancing and singing Another Op'nin', Another Show. And twenty kindergartners were taking a break from singing and playing about nature to draw pictures of flowers. An old building with new minds eager to learn.

The International Music Score Library Project, also known as Petrucci, is a wonderful and convenient resource for musicians of all ability levels and instruments. It hosts a large database (over 170,000!) of free downloadable scores and public domain recordings, from beginning piano etudes to full orchestral scores. Visit Petrucci and browse their amazing variety of works. Site members can also upload and share scores and recordings.
