Teacher Tip

Parents: Incentivize your child's practicing!

Give your young child a sticker for every good day of practice, and when they reach some number of days (25?) they get a prize (a special treat or trip).  But make sure it's quality practicing!

Music Therapy Corner

Soothe yourself with Toning!

Toning offers a quick and easy way to connect to your body and to lessen the physical symptoms of anxiety and stress. Sit or lay down in a comfortable position. Take in a breath from your belly button to the back of your spine. Instead of exhaling, make a tone. Start with a closed mouth hum and hold one note until you naturally need to take in another breath. Keep going. Notice how the tone creates vibrations in your body. Play with different pitches and vowel sounds and notice how that changes your experience. Done alone, toning is internally healing and helps us to attune to our feelings. With another person or in a group, it is a powerful experience of connection.

-Toby Williams, MA, MT-BC, LCAT, Director of Music Therapy Division

Music Partner Highlights

PS 89

This Cypress Hills Community School has a lot to celebrate. The school is in its new home, a colorful building on Atlantic Avenue. Every Thursday afternoon Music Partner teachers lead 60 middle school band students as they learn to play winds, brass, and percussion. This year, more than eight of these students received a scholarship from the Brooklyn Community Foundation to join our Saturday Teen Jazz Program. Stop in on a Saturday to hear them - they sound incredible!

People at The 7th Avenue Hub

Dedicated Conservatory Teacher, Beth Levin

For over 25 years, Beth Levin served on the piano faculty and instilled a love of music in all of her students. Primarily teaching individual lessons, she also performed in the Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra and the New Music Collective concert series. Over the years she has taught dozens of students at the Conservatory and she is proud that several of them have gone on to pursue music careers. "The Conservatory will miss Beth and her vibrant teaching, but we are delighted that she will continue to perform with the Conservatory Orchestra and New Music Collective. We wish her success in all of her future endeavors," states Executive Director Karen Geer.
