As winter moves into full swing, it's important for us to align ourselves with what is happening in nature. One way to do this is to explore our relationship with the world around us via the Five Elements Theory.
Five elements theory began with the ancient Chinese calendar, where five types of energies were assigned to different days, months, and years. The energies were given the names of five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Human relationships to the cycles of the day, seasons, and moon were of interest to traditional Chinese healers, as well, and five elements theory became a fundamental part of traditional healing. The principles of the five elements became widespread and are fundamental in practices such as acupuncture, feng shui, shiatsu, qi gong, astrology, and healing through foods. In five elements theory, winter is the time for the water element. It is also the time of hibernation, and embodies a sense of going inward, of reassuring our selves that all is well. When the winter snow falls, it helps to contain our journey of inner travel. Although, it seems unlikely at this point that we may even see snow this winter! Other ways to align with water include meditation, reading, or simply stillness. You can experience stillness any evening when you step outside into nature and gaze at at the stars in a clear sky and the universe that surrounds you. You may become deeply aware of yourself, and yet at the same time conscious of the vastness of the cosmos. You may experience a stillness, peace, and tranquility, or reveal a new perspective on a particular problem. Another way to experience water element in winter, if you happen to travel to the ocean, is to take some time to sit and experience the depth of the ocean, tapping in to the essence of the water element. All of us contain the five elements within and when we can take time to feel them, we align ourselves with the cycles of nature and beyond. Happy Winter! Namaste, Anisha

Our Spring Mountain Retreat to the Prama Institute is just around the bend. Join us for a mountain getaway with yoga, qi gong, meditation, rejuvenation, and friendship. All activities are completely optional!
Friday: late afternoon Pan Gu Yoga class followed by dinner, an evening walk, and a Nine Step meditation to soothe you to sleep.
Saturday: light breakfast and a Pan Gu Yoga practice, followed by a Pan Gu Shengong moving form class and practice. The afternoon is on your own, before we regroup for a late afternoon Pan Gu theory teaching and practice followed by dinner. We'll gather again in the evening for some socializing and a Nine step Meditation.
Sunday: will look much like Saturday, with Yoga and Qi Gong practice and a 2:00 pm check-out time. |
Three Myths about Acupuncture

Myth #1: Acupuncture is painful. There is no pain. Acupuncture needles are hair-like and very thin. The individual may feel a tiny prick or pinch when the needle is inserted, or may not feel anything at all. The needles remain in place in your body while you rest and relax on a table for 20- to 30 minutes.
No tissue is damaged from the insertion of the needle, which actually has a rounded point and is solid. The needles are also single-use and disposable, so there is no danger of disease transmission.
Myth #2: Acupuncture works only if you believe in it. While generally speaking, positive thoughts can help make you feel better, why and how acupuncture works isn't that simple. Acupuncture has a physiological affect on the body and brain chemistry. It is proven to release endorphins and positively affect and balance the sympathetic, parasympathetic, autonomic, and central nervous systems it creates homeostasis in the body.
When the body is in homeostasis, it is unencumbered by disease. The body is working more efficiently and effectively. Acupuncture restores blood flow and increases circulation to ligaments, muscles and nerves. It reduces stress and fatigue, and supports your immune system.
Myth #3: Once I start, I'll need to continue forever. Everyone responds differently to treatment; however, the idea is not to create a dependency on acupuncture. Acute problems like a sports injury, a cold or flu, fatigue, stress, or digestive upsets resolve between 3-7 sessions. Chronic problems vary in the number of treatments required. Treatments generally become less and less frequent so your body develops a memory of the healthy patterns on its own. |
