Toby's Diary

Hi Folks, I've had a lovely month of July as you guys call it. I've met new dogs, played until I crash and learnt loads.

I have been introduced to a little dog called Harry....apparently Harry comes to stay with us sometimes so my person thought I should meet this dog.  We went for a lovely walk together in Highlands Park but to be honest there was so many smells to sniff, it kept us both busy.

When he came, I used my charm and charisma to win Harry's affection and guess what?....it worked, we're great friends now.

Another piece of news is I've met THE CAT, she just appeared out of nowhere and was suddenly in my life.....I like her a lot, in fact I can't get enough of her, but I get the feeling she only likes me in small doses....I'm having a hard time understanding that she doesn't want me so close to her all the time but she smells so good!!

I still like sneaking up onto the couch when my person isn't around, I've also chewed a few belongings of hers, she doesn't get mad but I am slowly starting to notice that not many of her belongings are around anymore!

I'm really loving living here, I feel that I'm fitting in well with Hansi and the love of my life; Dritta she's so cool. I've also found my voice and like to bark at any given opportunity to get my person's attention, never works though! you humans are so clever.

See you next time

Love Toby x

Strays of Greece

Lyn and Mark Purden have had a holiday home on the Greek island of Aegina for many years, and it was in 1995 that they actively started fundraising to help the animals on the island.

An animal welfare group called Animal Respect developed on Aegina, and most of the fundraising carried out by the Friends of the Strays of Greece has gone to support this organisation.

Animal Respect has developed a dog shelter which is home to some 130 dogs, all of which are extremely well cared for in every way. The lucky ones find homes mainly as a result of the hard work of the German support group. Street dogs and stray cats are also routinely fed, and veterinary care is given wherever necessary.

Special Appeal

With the economy as it is in Greece, hundreds of dogs are being abandoned as owners simply can't afford to keep them.  Please take the time to have a look at the wonderful work members of the charity do for these animals.

Our mission statement is 'To help provide food, shelter and veterinary care to stray and unwanted cats and dogs in Greece.

At the beginning of 2012, there was an estimated 600,000 stray dogs in Greece and the number of cats must have been significantly higher.

Our achievements are only possible with the necessary funding and that is where we need your help.

Remember, we are all volunteers as no one within the charity receives any remuneration so the money you give is spent where it is most needed.

EVERY DONATION MAKES A DIFFERENCE!

DEXTER

A typical young terrier who loves to play and be in the middle of all the action. He is a lovely dog but is frightened of some men, he has obviously had a bad experience somewhere along the line but a bit of patience would help him overcome it.  He is currently in a foster home in Greece where he lives with around 15 other dogs.

Holiday Dogs

Holiday Dogs Charity Group Walks (sponsored by Hudson Signs) are designed to give dogs and owners a chance to meet and greet, and to basically go for a group walk together.  Walks are open to any age and are at various locations locally, usually lasting around 1 hour to 1 hour 30mins.

They are open to anyone, any age so come along (with a dog if you have one!) and help raise money for the Animal Health Trust to help with their investigations into Seasonal Canine Illness.

Group walk Jul 12The latest walk was held at Felixstowe on Sunday 1st July with a lovely turnout of extremely energetic and excited dogs, all ready to burn off their energy together.

All participants met at the Manor Terrace Car Park and began the walk around the beautiful Languard Fort area. The dogs didn't mind being put back onto their leads as they walked through the nature reserve, along the board walk, and then let lose to have a well deserved play together along the beach and for some a swim in the sea!

Many owners praised their dog's behaviour and commented on how confident they felt with their dogs being off lead.

The walk was in aid of the Animal Health Trust to help them with their investigations into Seasonal Canine Illness. SCI is something which every dog owner needs to be aware of as symptoms can progress at a rapid rate, and in some cases has resulted in death.

The Animal Health Trust do not know exactly what the causes SCI, but it's generally seen between August and November and it can affect any size, shape or sex of dog and that it causes dogs to become very ill, very quickly.

The most common clinical signs are sickness, diarrhoea and lethargy. If you suspect your dog is showing signs of SCI then please contact your vet immediately.

To join in the next walk or for details on future walks then please call Mary-Ann on 07840 871547 or visit www.holidaydogs.co.uk
