Greetings!

The Jubilee weekend is upon us.  Please be careful with your dogs over this weekend, they won't have a clue what's going on, your house may be busier than usual, there may be fireworks in your neighbourhood, remember our dogs are living in a world they don't understand.

I have some exciting news, I have a new member to my pack, his name is Toby, he flew from Greece on Wednesday having been found wandering the streets, presumably kicked out onto the street. My two dogs Hansi and Dritta haven't quite accepted him yet, but they're getting there.

This will be a great opportunity to share with you his progress as he develops and finds his place in my pack and the trials and tribulations of providing clear leadership to him, so he can feel safe in the crazy world we live in.

Here's to a wonderful Jubilee weekend.

All the best

My First Day - by Toby

Hi my name is Toby and I'm going to share my time with you.

30 May 12

I thought I was going to die!! I was put in a plastic official looking kennel and placed in a dark space on an enormous looking contraptions I later learned you humans call planes....sometimes I'm glad I don't fully understand the human world, because if I was told that I would be flying through the air, I would have been a lot more frightened than I was, but I am a brave wolf you humans like to call dogs!.

I closed my eyes until it was all over.  I was loaded into a ground moving machine which I am more familiar with, for those of you who don't know what a ground moving machine is.....basically humans sit in it, concentrate very hard until the ground starts to move beneath us, crazy and pointless I know but when the ground stops moving you end up in a different place than where you started.

When the ground stopped moving, there was my person waiting for me.  She was smiling, quite what she had to smile about I don't know, she obviously didn't know the trauma I had just gone through.

I liked her immediately, she seemed to know not to make a big fuss of me, which made me feel safe. She let me have a good sniff of her and very calmly allowed me to jump into the back of another ground moving machine.

When the ground moving machine stopped, guess what, we were in a different place again.  This is when I met Hansi and Dritta, they didn't pay much attention to me, we sniffed each other and I was left to myself to check out this new place I had arrived at, I think this is where I'll stay, I like it here.

I was then allowed into the house, nobody was paying any attention to me which was great, I hate it when you humans get right up in my face when I don't know you.  After checking out my surroundings I started to feel that this is a good place to stay.

My person then did something that completely freaked me out, all of a sudden there was this big screen with other humans and lots of talking, I took refuge back in the garden as I'd never seen anything quite like it, then my person made it go away, phew!  Later on she switched the screen back on but stood near me calmly which made me feel a little better about looking at the this scary big screen.  I was brave enough to walk up to it and have a sniff and realised that the humans weren't going to jump out and kill us all....I do think that you humans are strange sitting there watching other humans!!!

Nighttime fell and my person spent my first night on the couch which I later realised isn't normal.

In the morning I got to have some food, but noticed that my person was eating before me.....how does she know?

For some reason I'm not allowed in the kitchen which is silly since this is the best smelling room in the whole house, but my person calmly kept leading me out without a fuss.  Now every time I go in there she lets me know by giving me a discerning but non threatening look.....I got it now, I think I might ask this question every day though just in case she changes her mind when she realises that it's a silly rule!!

Last night was scary as my person disappeared to the top of the house, I thought she'd completely left us all forever, so I let out a little bark.....phew she is still there, she came downstairs and sat there for a bit, then disappeared again....'where's she going' I thought, the top of the house is a mystery to me, I'm sure one day I will understand, Hansi and Dritta don't seem to mind which helps me feel better about it.

I'll let you in on a little secret, something I love to do is wipe my face on things, I like to smell of my surroundings. My person wasn't very happy when I tried to make myself smell like the freshly washed clothes.  She quietly lead me away from the clothes, so naturally I went back to it, then she kept leading me away, I gave up in the end, I will try again, you can count on that, after all, it is my favourite thing to do.

I had a great game with Dritta today, she's great, I think she's going to accept me into the pack, Hansi will need a little more work but I'll let you know next time what happens.

Right, time for a nap....speak to you soon.

Dog Workshops

Let the dogs do the talking!

How does your Dog's Mind Work?

Thinking DogDog workshops cover a wide range of aspects such as gaining and maintaining leadership, learning about your dog's body language and being able to successfully communicate with your dog without the need of force, pain or gadgets, making it possible to eliminate all non-medical behavioural problems.

These workshops are unique, as unlike the traditional training classes, these are specifically for you, the owner, enabling you to gain the most out of your time spent within the class, and then carrying out everything you have learnt from the comfort of your own home. This is far better for both you and your dog to enjoy communicating within your natural everyday home environment.

Walk Details

A walk around the Languard Fort Area, (dogs to be on a lead as we walk through the nature reserve), finishing off with a run and a play along the beach as we make our way back to the car park.

Donations can be made on the day, all proceeds going to the Animal Health Trust.

Kesgrave Walk May

Our last group walk was held at Kesgrave, 12th May.  Dogs brought their owners along to meet up at Long Strops Entrance, Kesgrave where the eager dogs where keen to be let off the lead and allowed to run freely together with their new found friends.

Everyone enjoyed a much deserving walk in the sunshine with some good company along the way, making a refreshing change to walking alone in the rain!

Generous voluntary donations were made, totalling to 72.50 with all proceeds going to the Animal Health Trust to help them with their investigations into Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI).

The Animal Health Trust do not know exactly what the causes SCI, but it's generally seen between August and November and it can affect any size, shape or sex of dog and that it causes dogs to become very ill, very quickly. The most common clinical signs are sickness, diarrhoea and lethargy.  If you suspect your dog is showing signs of SCI then please contact your vet immediately.
