"Understanding our Catholic Liturgical Calendar"

"The purpose of the Liturgical Year Calendar is not to mark the passage of time, but to celebrate and understand more fully the entire mystery of Jesus Christ, from his incarnation and birth until his ascension, the day of Pentecost, and the expectation of his return in glory."
Each week as we participate in mass, we hear the different readings and their seasons, such as Ordinary Time and Advent. We see the priest celebrate mass in different colored garments throughout the year. Many of us are unaware of these special seasons and prayers associated with our liturgical calendar and want to better understand our faith. Click here to find a simple explanation of our Catholic Liturgical Calendar.

Evangelization & Catechesis
"Coming Soon: Lent!" It's hard to believe that Lent is just a few short weeks away! During Lent, we refocus our attention on prayer and preparing ourselves for Easter. In our busy lives, it is easy to get stuck in our prayer patterns. If you are looking for something new to add to your prayer and reflection time this Lent, visit Creighton University's website by clicking here. There is even an app you can download to read it on your phone! |
Youth & Young Adult Ministry
"Jesus Hates Religion" If you use any social networking sites, you have probably noticed the viral video "Jesus Hates Religion" that has been circulating in the last few weeks. Many young people (and adults) are watching this video and jumping on the anti-religion bandwagon without full knowledge or understanding of the things mentioned about the Catholic Church in this video. Several Catholics have made video responses and posted them publicly. Over 18 million people have watched the original video while only 364,000 have watched the response. As Blessed John Paul II would say, "Be not afraid!" Let's use these videos as an opportunity for apologetics and engaging our young people in meaningful, healthy conversations about our Catholic faith. You can click here to read Scott Miller's blog on the topic which has the original video as well as some Catholic responses. Be sure to scroll down to the comments section and click the link to the spiritjuice video. |
Marriage & Family Life
"World Marriage Day"
Did you know that, Sunday, February 12, 2012 is World Marriage Day? World Marriage Day honors husband and wife as head of the family, the basic unit of society. It salutes the beauty of faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life. Did you know that the idea for this celebration started here in Baton Rouge? In 1981, couples from our city encouraged the Mayor, the Governor and the Bishop to proclaim Valentine's Day as "We Believe in Marriage Day." The event was so successful that the idea was presented to the Worldwide Marriage Encounter Leadership. By 1982, this day was proclaimed by 43 Governors and celebrated on military bases worldwide. In 1983, the name was changed to World Marriage Day and observed on the second Sunday of February. In 1993, his Holiness Pope John Paul II imparted his apostolic blessing on World Marriage Day. What will you do in your family and your community to honor married couples on this special celebration? For more information, visit wmd.wwme.org.
