"Diocese Celebrates 50 Years"

On Sunday, November 6th, the Diocese of Baton Rouge celebrated its 50th anniversary with a Golden Jubilee Mass at the River Center.  People came together from all walks of life to join in the celebration.  Present were representatives from each parish and organization, as well as priests, deacons, and religious from all over the diocese.  Also present were all of the bishops from the state of Louisiana!  It was an incredible celebration of being "Born in the Spirit of Faith".   To read the article in the Advocate, click here.

"First Friday for Food Security"  USCCB logo

Thanksgiving will be here before we know it! While it is not a religious holy day in our church, it is a national holiday we all observe by stopping and taking time to remember and thank God for the blessings we enjoy. We usually do so at tables laden with an abundance of food! Since May of this year the USCCB has encouraged Catholics to participate in "First Friday for Food Security". We are asked, on First Fridays of each month between now and April, 2012, to "fast" by eating meals that cost only as much as is allotted for a family your size by the USDA Modified AThrifty Food Plan (which is used as the basis for Food Stamps). For a family of 2 adult and 2 children the range is $124-$140 per week; how many of us will spend that and more on our Thanksgiving meal? Perhaps as we enter into the season of Thanksgiving a way of showing our own appreciation for God's blessings is to consider accepting this challenge. What a great opportunity to share a "teachable moment" with our families as we participate! More information is available on the USCCB website including monthly fliers and a FaceBook page to share your experiences. "Grateful"

There are many good books outGrateful cover for children on Thanksgiving. One book worth recommending is "Grateful: A Song of Giving Thanks" by John Buchinno for young children.  This gentle song is sung by Art Garfunkel on an accompanying CD. It is a celebration of the beauty of the seasons, the wonder of nature, and the meaning of faith. Hakkarainen's soft-focused, luminous illustrations grace each page. Some of the words and ideas are challenging for a young audience; for example, "In a world that can bring pain, I will still take each chance, For I believe that whatever the terrain, Our feet can learn to dance." The concept of faith is stressed here, with the reference to believing "in a hand you cannot see."  For more information, visit John Buchinno's website

"Why Priests are Happy"

Have you or someone you know ever considered the priesthood or religious life?  A new book written by Monsignor Stephen Rosetti explores recent studies that show priests are happier with their jobs than most Americans.  For most priests, the inner peace that comes from living out their calling brings more joy than any other job possibly could.  Have you encouraged someone to consider a vocation to the priesthood or religious life?  We should all be lucky enough to live out our true vocation!  Read more about the story here.

"Standing Together for Conscience Rights"

In the month of October, the USCCB's designated Respect Life Month, the Catholic Church in our nation experienced something very remarkable. Deirdre McQuade, the Assistant Director for Policy & Communications at the USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, writes "Twenty leaders of national Catholic organizations signed a joint statement to protest the mandate for contraception and sterilization coverage issued this summer by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and to call for legislative reform to protect conscience rights. It was an unprecedented sign of unity and solidarity among these Catholic organizations, many of which will have their conscience rights and religious liberty violated if the mandate is not reformed soon. The leaders who signed this public appeal to Congress and the Administration represent millions of Catholics." To continue reading, follow this link
