As I write this, hurricane Isaac with its 80+ mile per hour winds is dropping too much rain over New Orleans. For us here in North Central Florida, well ...we dodged a bullet - this time.

So, that got me to thinking, what do you do with your RV in windy conditions? Is your main awning out? Have you tied it down? Should you roll the awning up and secure it to your rig?

If you are staying at a campsite for more than a few days and you like to keep your awning down, then you should tie it down securely.

If you stay a couple of nights I would think you would want to raise your awning and stow it away every time you left the rig for a day trip. Read what my brother David has to say about this below in the Parts Desk. Speaking of campsites ...

In 2010 Sharon and Gary Simmers bought an RV from us and hit the road. They took the picture of Nooksack Falls below near Mt. Baker in Washington state this summer. They were staying at Birch Bay RV Park in Birch Bay, WA. Where did you RV this summer?

Is it safe to leave my Water Heater on Electric all the time? It seems the water reaches a higher temperature on electric.

The Atwood combination gas/electric water heater can be operated on gas or electric or in combination. The current model water heaters have a thermostat that is set at 140 degrees; the same thermostat is used to control both gas and electric.

Earlier models (prior to 2003) had two separate thermostats, the gas thermostat was located on the outside of the tank below the pressure relief valve and the electric thermostat was located on the back of the tank. The thermostat will shut off when the temperature reaches 140 degrees and start the heating process when the temperature drops below 115 degrees.

If the thermostat should fail, the Water Heater also has an ECO (Energy Cut-Off) device that will shut the heater down at 170 degrees. Also the water heater has a pressure relief valve that will open at approximately 210 degrees or between 125/150 psi.

It is safe to use your water heater on 110V only with no adverse affects. You may also use both gas and electric at the same time to reduce the cycling time of heating cold water. It can typically take up to 40 minutes to heat water to 140 degrees using 110V and that time can be reduced to about 20 minutes by using both heat sources.

If you do not feel your water heater is operating properly, please contact a Certified Atwood Service Center.

If you have not operated your water heater on gas for several weeks, you may want to check your main burner tube and flue tube for obstructions before firing up the heater. Spider webs, insects and other debris can accumulate causing problems with the gas flow in the tubes.

To pick up on Dell's theme above, I want to add that if you have electric, automatic awnings, the safe thing to do is retract them whenever you leave the campground on a day trip. If you have a manual deployed main awning, either tie it down sufficiently or retract it as well before you jump in your car to go to lunch or explore the area.

Here is Florida a sudden storm with strong gusts can show up unannounced. A Customer recently told us that they left the RV park for dinner after stowing their awning. When they returned a neighbor's awning, which had not been retracted, was lying across the roof of the rig and the braces were bent and contorted.

Meanwhile, another customer reported that while on extended stays in his RV he applied three systems to protect his deployed, manual awning. He used the Camper Specialties Awning Tie-down Kit and the JR Products Heavy Duty Tie-Down along with 4 OP Products Awning Saver Clamps.

We stock tie-down kits in the store. But, you can also order right from our catalog via the product links.
