Spring is upon us once more. If you're like most of our customers you're beginning to plan one or more RV trips. I wonder ... how do you select your destination? Will you visit family? Friends? or places like national parks? How do you plan your stops along the way? Do you take the most direct route driving long hours each day in order to arrive at your final destination more quickly? Or, do you make your trip a liesurely adventure  staying a few days here and there as you meander toward your ultimate goal?

For many of us, I think, (I hope) it's the journey we look forward to, not just the end of the road.

If your a golfer, why not plan your trips around golf courses? The Golf Course Portal will help you find golf course between home and anywhere in the U.S.

If you like museums then Wikipedia's List of museums in the United States will provide plenty of interesting stops along your route. The Wiki people also provide a nice list of national parks. Another great resource is stateparks.com.

Are amusement and theme parks your thing? Then Theme Park City may be for you.

No matter where you travel to in our great country, these resources will help you have even more fun along the way.

Oh, and while you're driving around, why don't you stop on in for a cup of coffee and top off the LP tank. The coffee is free and the LP is cheaper than you think.

That chirping sound coming from your RV is not a little birdie. It's likely to be your smoke detector(s) requesting a new battery.

Your Smoke detectors are designed to alert you when smoke permeates your living space. But, as Forest River tells us in their Owner's Manual, "They are also not a cure for poor fire safety habits. Smoke detectors need occasional maintenance for reliable service."

"A smoke detector is designed to be relatively maintenance free, but there are three things you can do to keep a detector in reliable working order:

  1.  TEST IT - at least once a week by firmly pressing the button (usually) located near the center of the cover. The alarm should sound briefly. If it does not work, replace the battery and test again.
  2.  CLEAN - the detector if grease or dust accumulates. The folllowing procedures should be followed once a year:
    1. Remove the cover and the battery.
    2. Clean dust from sensing chamber openings with a vacuum and soft brush attachment.
    3. Replace the battery and depress the test switch. The alarm should sound briefly. If it does not work, try a new battery.
  3. SERVICE - the detector if it does not work by sending it to the manufacturer or their repair center. DO NOT attempt to make the repairs yourself (other than battery replacement)."

Mark's article brings to mind a couple of things.

First, everything Mark and Forest River says about RV smoke detector maintanence goes for your home as well.

Second, you should know that we offer several types of LP, CO and smoke detectors in our store. You can also find a wide assortment of these detectors in our online catalogue beginning on page 298.

While smoke detectors are usually powered by 9 volt batteries, the vast majority of LP gas and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors are hardwired into your RV. They get power from your battery. Therefore, it's a good idea to keep your RV plugged in to a 50, 30 or even 20 (15) amp power source, even when not in use. Failing that, consider disconnecting your battery while the RV is in storage. You may even have a battery disconnect switch in your RV.
